Taylor not Pushing for new contract, yet

Posted May 15, 2007

A league source tells us that the decision of Redskins safety Sean Taylor to skip the first week of offseason practices (known as Organized Team Activities) and to show up for the second week of workouts is unrelated to his contract, or any lack of satisfaction therewith.

Though Taylor was unhappy with his contract not long after it was signed nearly three years ago, he is confident (we're told) that the deal will be renegotiated at the appropriate time.

There is some thought that a new deal could come after the 2007 season.

Taylor was the fifth overall pick in the 2004 draft. In the past, he has spent most of the offseason in Miami. The team was under the impression that he would show up for the first week of OTA's, and some players reportedly concluded that his absence was related to unhappiness with his contract.

I also heard a sound-byte from him in an interview saying the same. He seems content and focused on playing football which is obviously great news. I expect a monster season from Sean and I can't wait to see Landry out there with him too!

But, the time for negotiation will come sooner rather than later I expect. I want Sean to remain a Redskin and play with Landry for as long as possible - I hope we can get something done in the near future when that bridge comes.

since when does PFT have a clue. I just want to see his attitude after Landry signs his 20 million guaranteed rookie deal. Then I will stop being concerned until next year.

This sounds like spin to me. After all, if it was just a matter of him working out in Miami, Gibbs would have been able to report this to the press within a day. "Oh, I called Sean and he says he's just going to take advantage of my letting the vets work out on their own this week"...end of speculation. Instead, it appears he again didn't return Gibbs' call, at least until late in the week.

In reality I think Taylor was/is unhappy with his contract and when he finally did call back was told something to the effect that "Our cap space is busted this year but I give you my word that we'll take care of you next offseason."

So, if Landry signs for that astronomical signing bonus; do you think Nate Clements will feel cheated?

I think Clements signed for more, but either way I don't care. I only care about what our guys think. I'm just saying this money issue is not going to go away.

I love the headline. In the interview with Kelli Johnson on Comcast, Taylor said that he was fine with his contract and would play under until management approached him about a new deal.

I think this sounds about right.

Taylor knows the 'Skins will pay big bucks and all he has to do is go out and have a quality season and he'll be in for a huge payday next offseason.

Why are people TRYING SO HARD to make something out of nothing? Has Taylor said anything about wanting a new contract?

First of all, everyone tried to blame his one week absence on his desire for a new contract. The boy shows up for the second week and says everything is fine. The issue of his contract was brought up to him, and if you ACTUALLY WATCH the interview he looked almost shocked at the question, and clearly answered, "there are definitely no issues with my contract, I actually try not to get involved in all that." Of course one of the reporters goes on to ask if there was the possibility of a new contract from the skins, and he said "I have a seven year contract with the skins and am only three years into it." But noooo people can't take that, I mean come on Sean Taylor HAS TO BE unhappy about his contract.

Geez, for the last time, anyone who has not seen the interview should go to www.redskins.com and kindly STFU afterwards. Its high time for a new topic.

They'll find room for both.

As good as Cooley is and as important as he is, his contract won't be a 'monster' contract. It'll be very big and worthy of Cooley but not cap strapping size.

At the expense of what? They simply can't aford to keep everybody happy. Thats the way the NFL is anymore. you can't afford to pay everybody top of the lone money without losing out in other area's.

He never gave a reason for missing the first week, all he said was he believes missing one week won't be a big deal as they still have a lot of OTA weeks ahead, during which he can get in shape for minicamp and training camp.

Excerpts from his interview:
"I'm definitely happy," Taylor said. "I have a seven-year contract. I've played three years of that contract, and I'm fine. That's never an issue. ... I [just] got a little tied up [last week] and had to go to my little girl's birthday party and stuff like that. I had fun out there at practice today. I had to catch up from last week."

Sounds to me like someone who just skipped for the sake of skipping.

So you think he will be happy with making 1/4th of what Landry is making for long? Remember he has Rosencrap as his agent.

Sports Talk 980 had a sound byte from Taylor this morning. He said he should have been up here for the 1st week, but got caught up with in things in Fl. Saying his girl's birthday was last week.

He sounded happy to be at Redskins park and working out with the guys.

No, but then again, with all due respect, you probably wish you made a little more than you presently do at your job, but are you b&*%ing and skipping work for it? Sean does not come across to me as wanting more money whether or not he WISHES he made a little more. I think his salary issues begin and end with the fans and media.

this sounds about right to me, he is known as an intravert (sp?) ... he doesn't like to talk a whole lot, especially on camera, and especially about his personal issues. I am sure the Danny nipped this in the bud, especially since he and the Drew have a good relationship, I believe Taylor wil be resigned next offseason to the largest contract for a safety. And I believe the Danny boy prolly explained that to him.

SEAN TAYLOR LIKES HIS SPACE!!!

Sorry for the caps but it's insane how people want to make a conspiracy out of everything. Dunno what is wrong with our culture anymore. We can never believe the facts. There must always be a shooter on the grassy gnoll. Or a vast conspiracy and government cover up.

Sean Taylor is a quiet guy. He doesn't like hanging out in the public. Don't make it more than it is. I'm sure the contract is in the back of his mind. But I doubt very seriously that he's really that concerned about it.

Wiki Definition of an Introvert.

Introversion is "the state of or tendency toward being wholly or predominantly concerned with and interested in one's own mental life". [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Introvert#_note-mw) Introverts tend to be quiet, low-key, deliberate, and relatively non-engaged in social situations. They take pleasure in solitary activities such as reading, writing, watching movies, inventing, and designing. An introverted person is likely to enjoy time spent alone and find less reward in time spent with large groups of people (although they may enjoy one-to-one or one-to-few interactions with close friends).

I said it last year and I'll repeat it now:

Taylor won't push for a contract extension until Troy Polamalu (who is a UFA this year) gets his done with the Steelers or on the FA market at the end of this season.

Then he will most likely base his demads on what Troy receives.

I saw the interview on comcast and he did have a genuine look of surprise when they asked about the contract. It didn't seem like he was just sayin all the right things. Although it's possible, it's not obvious that he's unhappy about anything. Why is it hard to believe that he chose to go to his daughter's bday party as opposed to a voluntary workout?

Well considering ST's contract can reach 40 million with incentives I'd say that is the main reason he isn't to upset about his contract. I also don't believe the Skins will sign Landry to a 160 million dollar contract, as much promise as LL has he's not A-Rod.
I'm sure Snyder would be the first to know about any financial unhappiness from Rosenhaus regarding ST, as those two have a great working relationship, but I'm sure that detail slipped your memory as well.

His contract was the richest ever for a safety. With bonuses/incentives it could be worth 40 million.

He already said he is fine with it.

Glad you have the contract in perspective. Very few people knew that.

I just wish everyone took the time to find out Sean's contract is pretty good, richest at the time for a safety and Landry won't get a significant amount more if any.

Sean Taylor is just a different type of cat. He's not media-hungry and doesn't really like to draw attention to himself. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion. The only thing I wish he would do is communicate better. I know we all come on here and stoke the fires, but in all reality he comes from good stock and seems like a pretty good all around guy. It just looks bad when your legendary coach always seems to be getting the cold shoulder in the media. Especially in Washington where the sun rises and sets with Gibbs.
On another note; Did anyone see the t-shirt Cooley was wearing in his interview on Redskins.com? Chuck Norris. It just reaffirms how much I like that dude. And Chuck, MUST NOT forget about Chuck. I got kids.

Let's take off the burgundy glasses for a second. You dont fire your agent if you are happy with your contract. He is doing his job by not burning bridges but you better believe he is upset with his contract. Props to ST for acting on it in a professional manner.
