Offseason update: New York Giants

(June 7, 2007) -- This is what I like about the New York Giants' offseason moves: They had a solid draft, addressing key needs without reaching or having to trade away picks.

Aaron Ross is happy to be in the NFL, and the Giants are pleased to have him.
Aaron Ross is happy to be in the NFL, and the Giants are pleased to have him.
First-round choice Aaron Ross should immediately challenge for a starting spot at cornerback. The former Texas standout plays with an aggressive, physical style that allows him to be particularly effective when challenging receivers at the line of scrimmage and to hold his own when covering larger and stronger pass-catchers. Even if Ross doesn't start, he should contribute as a nickel back as well as on special teams.

Second-round pick Steve Smith provides much-needed depth at wide receiver, where Amani Toomer's recovery from a knee injury could create a need for the rookie to see substantial playing time opposite Plaxico Burress. Toomer hopes to be ready by the start of training camp, but if he isn't the Giants could end up leaning heavily on second-year pro Sinorice Moss and/or Smith. Smith, from USC, has the versatility to play outside or inside. He also has superb hands and excellent body control.

Jay Alford, the Giants' third-round pick, looks as if he will be another youngster joining a rotation of defensive tackles that received an infusion of youth last year in Barry Cofield. Alford, an exceptionally hard-worker from Penn State, is a powerful inside force who should do a decent job of controlling the interior of the line while also using his considerable speed and athleticism to get around outside blockers.

Zak DeOssie could end up being one of the true sleepers of the draft. The former star linebacker at Brown is big (6-foot-5, 250 pounds), strong, tough and extremely intelligent. He could make an immediate impact at linebacker, but if not he should give the Giants a reliable long-snapper, a skill his father, former NFL linebacker Steve DeOssie, also possessed.

This is what concerns me: The Giants lost one of the best game-breaking running backs the league has ever seen when Tiki Barber decided to retire. Barber still has plenty to give, but decided he would rather work in front of a television camera.
