Funny. BP thought Romo was too cocky for his own good. Looks like Jerry doesn't care.

Keep eating the cheese, fellas.

Former Cowboys receiver Keyshawn Johnson recently called quarterback Tony Romo the most over-hyped player in the league.

Considering that Romo has achieved Joe Namath-like celebrity despite having only 10 starts, Johnson is probably right.

Even though Romo has yet to win a playoff game, his name registers over one million listings on a Google search. That's because he is the quarterback of American's team and has been linked to singers Jessica Simpson and Carrie Underwood.

And it was Romo, not the more accomplished Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, who was asked to be a celebrity judge at the Miss Universe Pageant.

And it is no secret that Romo is enjoying his 15 minutes of fame with trips to nightclubs in Dallas and Los Angeles.

As a result, there are those who question whether it is too much too soon for Romo and whether he is putting in enough work at his full-time job -- quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.

For his part, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has no such concerns about Romo, who went from an undrafted free agent to never throwing a pass in four years in the NFL, to a Pro Bowl quarterback in 2006.

He said Romo's newfound celebrity is good for the Cowboys and good for the league.

"We all want Tony to be everything he can be on the field," Jones said. "From my perspective, I like his colorfulness off the field. That is good for the Cowboys and good for the league. There is an element here that is entertainment, and you have to back it up with action. But if you are in my shoes, you are looking at the Cowboys franchise ... our role and where we are from an entertainment standpoint. I like the way Romo does it."

Jones, who always believes there is no such thing as bad publicity, doesn't deny that Romo's popularity will help him sell more Cowboys merchandise.

In fact, he said Romo's celebrity and Hispanic heritage -- which is key in a state like Texas -- played a huge role in the team's decision to pass on Notre Dame quarterback Bradie Quinn in the draft.

But Jones said Romo is taking care of his football business.

"I can assure you he is doing his work and doing it at the level that allowed him to come from free-agent status to being someone we are counting on," Jones said. "But I like how he handles it. I know first-hand he has his mind and eye on the ball."

Romo said he is getting used to being in gossip magazines and the subject of Internet blogs. Still, he doesn't always understand it.

First, he said his nightlife is being exaggerated. Second, he said he works as hard as he ever has.

"It surprised me that people care that much," Romo said. "It cracks me up sometimes that people ask you certain things, and I'm like, 'Where did that come from?' It just goes with the territory, and being in the position that I'm in, I understand it. I don't take myself too seriously, but I take my job very seriously. I think that's a good mix at the end of the day. I just try to be a good person and work as hard as I can in football. I can sleep at the end of the night if I do that."

Considering he has not missed a single day of offseason training, OTAs or mini camps I think he is doing fine with his day job

I like that Jerry is less concerned with a winning season than an entertaining and profitable one. The more exposure Romo gets the higher the profit. Nice!

according to an article last week Romo made it to the fourth OTA out of four that week coming back from the pageant

Tony Romo was present and accounted for at the Cowboys' first mini-camp, ready and able to practice - as he was at the team's fourth of four organized team activity practice sessions here Friday, all of which are classified as voluntary.

http://www.dallascowboys.com/news.c...12278AF98914FC0

pointing out how much Romo attended off season workouts, if he attended all four why say it that way, why not say he attend all?

to me that is worded to say he was at the fourth practice only that week of 4 scheduled, while else point out they are voluntary?

? Did you miss an article about Romo and the Cowboys? Thats not like you Bubba, i cant believe it!!!

There is something different about Tony Romo these days.

Everyone has been saying it lately, and finally, the Cowboys quarterback was able to admit it here between mini-camp practices at Valley Ranch.

"Yeah, I've changed my mechanics a little bit," Romo said with a smile. "It's nothing big. But yeah, I've worked on a few things to try to get better. So, that's something that's different."

While that is the case for Romo, he's also playing along with the media and the notion that his off-the-field activities which have garnered much attention as of late are affecting his personality, and even more importantly, his play on the field.

But Romo has said all along that shooting commercials, competing in golf tournaments or even socializing with bigger superstars than himself won't cut into his day job.

Apparently, it hasn't cut into his time.

"Well, he's here all the time," Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said of Romo. "He's here extra. I mean, all of them have their own lives. These are grown men. But I've seen him here probably more than anybody else we have. So I believe in his commitment."

But Romo says he doesn't prepare any other way. Not just because he's the starting quarterback and he's trying to learn Jason Garrett's new offense, but for reasons even simpler than that.

"It's football. It's competition," said Romo, who attended all 11 OTA (Organized Team Activity) practice sessions and doesn't plan on missing any of the voluntary mini-camp practices this weekend. "I just like to come out here and compete and get better. And we're learning a lot out here. I just don't know why you wouldn't be out here. I really think I've gotten better because of it. So that's exciting."

Romo said he was also excited to see full attendance for Friday's mini-camp practices, including starting receivers Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn, whose attendance at the OTA practices has been inconsistent.

"Well, it was good to have all those guys out there," Romo said. "But I have confidence in those guys. I've never really worried about that. Honestly, I think it's easier for these receivers to learn the offense. All they have to do is listen for their number (in the huddle) and they know what they're doing."

But at the same time, Romo said there will be some changes with the receivers, who will be lining up differently this year.

"What I like is that we can change it up more this year," he said. "I think everyone has the ability to run every route. We'll be more dangerous because we'll be able to mix people all around. If T.O. was the X (receiver) then he was the X. And he was on the left side by himself last year. But that will change a little more now. He'll be in the slot and other places a little more now."

Another change Romo likes about the new offense is the progression within the play.

He said while most offenses have a high-to-low progression, meaning the quarterback looks for the deep route first, and then can check down to the middle and short passes as the play develops, Romo said this offense has a combination of both.

"We'll be able to go high-to-low, but also the other way, too," Romo said. "This offense is more of a rhythm offense. You have to be in rhythm. Last year, I didn't have to go short route, short route, deep route. It would be deep route, then short. But this year is different. Sometimes now it's short, short, short, then deep route."

And while it sounds simple enough, Romo said not every quarterback has the ability to go from a short-route stance to a deep throw.

"If you aren't able to do both, you might struggle in this offense," Romo said. "You have to be able to go short to deep quickly. It's difficult for most people to do. I think it's neat that we have both in."

And the reason the Cowboys can have those back and forth progressions is simply because Romo has the arm strength to do it.

"It's more of a situation of either you can do it, or you can't," Romo said of throwing the ball 40 to 50 yards down the field, with basically a flick of the wrist. "Some guys can do it and some guys can't. You practice it so you can do it. If you can't, then you're smart enough to figure out you need to be the guy checking the ball down.

"And this is no knock against Jason Garrett, but he was the guy who would put himself into position who could succeed. He'd get the ball out quickly to the guys so they could get the yards. But a guy like Drew Bledsoe would hang (in the pocket) a little longer because he could make that throw. And the difference is just knowing yourself and knowing what's going to make you successful."

And that's where the mechanics come into play.

Romo knows his strong arm is something that will help him make all the throws. However, he's trying to tweak his mechanics so he can have a quick release as well.

"It's a tough combination to have a strong arm, with a quick release," Romo said. "So I've always tinkered with the idea of how do I maintain both. This off-season, I'm trying to find ways to do both. But that's nothing new. I change my mechanics probably every year. What I've learned is there's always a way to get faster with your release."

Has it worked?

Obviously, it's too early to tell, considering the Cowboys are still running around in shorts and T-shirts.

"But I'm feeling like I'm throwing the ball better than I ever have," Romo said. Add that to the list of things that are different from last year. </FONT>

That's because attending OTA's is not news. Missing them is.

If Romo is reported as attending "the fourth of four OTA's this week", and not "All four OTA's this week", you can hardly act shocked that people will talk about it.

ok, your right, and i do see that...but cant you see why we/I would post an article that says he has been to ALL 11 OTA's to combate that. In my blind homer glasses all I could see was that Romo is having to learn a much more complicated offensive style than last years throw it to the first read offense. I also saw that apparently Owens and Glenn have not been to all the OTA practices and he hasn't been jelling with them as much as he could. The rest of it sort of blurred out.

I'm not faulting you for posting an article that says he has attended all OTA's...actually his attending OTA's was pretty low on my list of concerns about Romo. Hell, half the team seems to have missed the Cowboys' OTAs lol... :D

I hate the Cowboys.

I really do.

A lot of Redskin fans in this thread a trying WAY too hard to make something out of nothing. Arguing semantics in mid-June about a couple OTAs seems a little ridiculous.

For the record, it seems clear that Romo attended all the OTAs and the reporters just phrased things differently.

Anyway, carry on.
