Cut by Redskins; Stud corner leader of Als '06 Secondary
HERB ZURKOWSKY, The Gazette
Published: Sunday, June 10, 2007
Chip Cox has been down this road before. He attended the
Detroit Lions training camp in 2005, but that was different. He was a rookie, right out of college, and said he wasn't mentally ready for life in the National Football League.
But this cut was the deepest of all. Cox was released last Friday by the Washington Redskins, the team he worked out for, and signed with last winter. As an option-year CFL player, Cox had roughly a nine-week window of opportunity to attract interest from NFL teams.
But he wasn't happy with the timing of his departure, coming weeks before the official start of NFL training camp. The Redskins needed room on their roster for a defensive back with more experience.
"I was just shocked. To me, I don't understand," Cox told The Gazette. "I feel like I was better than a lot of guys still there. Just seeing what was on the field ... the competition ... I definitely was one of the top four corners on the team. You can print it. I hope it goes to Washington.
"I thought I'd make it to the main camp. They couldn't even put me in a preseason game."
It wasn't a surprise to see Cox headed south. The Als had anticipated losing the 5-foot-9, 194-pounder, one of the quickest players on last year's team. Cox had an outstanding rookie season for Montreal. He tied for the team lead in interceptions, with three, including one he returned 54 yards. He recovered a fumble and forced three others, while knocking down five passes. Cox also was a force on special teams, blocking two punts.

I guarantee Springs, Smoot, Rogers, Macklin, Butler, AND Jimoh are better than him.

How big can it be? He only weighs 190 lbs?
But that statement def. says that he is not "super smart"

Last off topic post for me in this thread...
I was on the beach with a couple of friends and they said "Man I love the way the sand feels on my feet"
And I said...

If Jimoh is a better cornerback than Cox, then Cox has no business being in the league playing that position.

I live in montreal so obviously i follow the Als. I don't what what Cox is thinkin, or Herb Zurkowski ( the writer) Normally he is a good columnist but to be honest, this guy was nothing more then average. Sure we made it to the grey cup but not after losing 8 straight games in which our secondary was torn apart. Keep thinking your amazing cox!!

Anyone in a wheelchair is better than Lemon Ade and he might be better than Butler (but he is trying to come back from an injury that takes 2 full years to heal usually), so I can understand his ire at getting cut but I guarantee that he is not better than Smoot, Springs, Macklin, Rogers....but I also guarantee he will end up in Montreal again....
I think he is confused and confusing....
"I want to play at the world's highest level, the NFL. I'm just not going to play at that level. There might be some politics, but the best play in the CFL."

I don't care what anyone says, that was a damn safety Yeah, definitely a safety if not for that dumb tuck rule. I love how this has turned into a semi-bash Ade thread. Man, I hope he never reads these boards for his own sake. And I actually like Ade too.
This whole article was hilarious. This guy's so full of himself and so bitter. Top 4 on the team?! Are you kidding me? This guy would've been lucky to make the practice squad- somehow I imagine Gregg Williams can evaluate this guy better than he can evaluate himself.

One of the TOP FOUR.
Hmmmmmm.
Springs, Smoot, Rogers, Macklin, Butler, Jimoh
So that means he is better than 3 of the above.
Yeah.......OK.......whateva.

agreed, he got shafted in that game. He came in when Springs went down and the defense still kept the game close, and would have won if not for that botched safety call.
Jimoh > Chip Cox. This may be the year Jimoh gets cut though, since we have 5 cb's with starting experience now, but I hope he still makes it as a special teams player, like every other year.

If Jimoh is a better cornerback than Cox, then Cox has no business being in the league playing that position.
It looks like nobody's missing the point, but for those few readers who do:
Jimoh has no business playing corner in the NFL.
Cox is worse than Jimoh.
Cox has no business watching the NFL.
Feeling pretty good about the nickel and dime corner spots this year. Smoot, Macklin, Butler sounds a bit better than Rumph, Wright, and Jimoh.

He's just bitter because he's experienced his first cut; not a laceration but from the "among the consideration of being a part of the top four."

June-11th-2007, 08:59 AM
In his defense he did say he was one of the top 4 corners in camp that he saw, well now that springs is back does that make him a top 4 corner, now that we signed butler is he still a top 4 corner?
Doubt it
RDSKNfaithfull
June-11th-2007, 09:07 AM
I don't doubt he was a top 4 corner in camp the only problem was that Springs and Butler were not in camp so that could have knocked him down to the 6th best corner he might be better than Westbrook who is a name who sparks interest.

Maybe thats exactly why he was cut. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you arent super-smart, you just arent Redskins material...
Since when is a Als player a stud corner?
Rocky21
June-11th-2007, 11:16 AM
A stud corner in Montreal is not the same as a stud corner in the NFC East.

dont worry chip - it will get to washington. and, unfortunately for you, approximately 31 other nfl cities. all of which will immediatly remove you from further consideration.
if you bring a T.O. attitude you sure as hell better also bring a T.O. game

i agree confidence is good, but trying to make a tough statement to an nfl franchise when you are not worth the jersey they give you is more than just being confident.
as stated by others, if he is as good as he thinks, he will at least get another shot with another team. but the media-based bravado towards nfl franchises is not the way to get your ball rolling in the right direction.

Cox played at a small school, wasn't drafted and had to play in Canada to keep a uniform on. And yet he is arrogant enough to think after a week that he is the equal of NFL veterans who have proven themselves?
Who wants a dingus like this on the team in any case?
