He was one of the most productive 8th round draft picks ever!

Jessie Armstead Will Sign, Then Retire as a Giant
by Dan Benton
From 1993 until 2001, Armstead was the heart and soul of the New York Giants defense. While is overall statistics were impressive, they failed to tell the whole story. What he brought to the table on weekly basis could never be summed up in a stat sheet or a box score.

The appreciation among Giants fans and the organization ran deep -- an appreciation that continues to this day. Despite leaving after the 2001 season and joining the dreaded Washington Redskins, Armstead always remained a Giant. Now he'll have the opportunity to retire as one."This is the perfect opportunity," Armstead told me today. "You see certain guys get to do this, like Emmitt Smith did with Dallas. You always think of Emmitt as a Cowboy. I wanted to do that with the Giants... It's real special to know it wasn't a one-way street either."Armstead will sign a short contract with the Giants tomorrow and then announce his retirement shortly there after. While his 11-year NFL playing career will finally to an end, the legacy he left at Giants Stadium will live on.

Armstead played well for us - he averaged around 100 tackles and 5 sacks in the two years he was here. Not sure why you remember him as a bust? :whoknows:

He was certainly wasn't the Armstead of old, but he played solid LB for us. He was certainly better than Highway 57 has ever been.

I just can't believe he hasn't retired yet.

He was better than Mike Barrow, that was a huge bust, he didn't even get a chance play crappily

Good for him! He was a spectacular player for the Giants and a steady player for the skins during his two year stint here

Never realized he was an 8th rounder. Impressive. I remember when I thought Arrington/Armstead/Trotter was gonna be the best LB corps in the league.

He was definitely almost as good as Lavar while we had him. I remember being worried when we cut him, but then we got Marcus so that calmed things down. There is no better ending for him than to retire as a Giant, easily one of the better LB's to play in that time span.

Trotter was a bust for us, but Armstead was our best LB during his brief stint here, and he was the cheapest of the bunch as well. He was a decent value FA, and a classy guy.

I liked Armistead. Classy player when he played for NY and when he played for us Solid. Not spectacular, but very solid player.

Hmmmm, retire as a Giant? I was hoping he signed a one year deal to play with the Giants.
