View Full Version : Why Can't Father's Day Be During Football Season?

In a life fraught with responsiblity and priority, I wake up this morning asking to no one in particular and to everyone in general "Why can't Father's Day be during football season?".

I have two young daughters...both under the age of five. I'm certain that all fathers would agree that NOTHING comes close to the joy and wonder of watching your children grow up and become wonderful human beings in their own right. Spending Father's Day together is a pleasure....and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

This morning, my wife gave me a free pass to play golf tomorrow. I don't often get this opportunity and initially jumped at the chance. There's the small matter of a tee-time on what must be the busiest day of the year out on the links, but that's something I could figure out.

In the end, though, I think I'll stay close to home and spend the day with my family. There will be other days to golf.

What suddenly occurred to me, though, as I read about yesterday's first day of mini-camp....was that Father's Day should really be during football season. I mean, what better day to get that free pass than on a football Sunday? Opening day Sunday, even. To top it off, my daughters can watch WITH me. Now THAT would be a great day.....win or lose.

Honestly.

Every season is a fresh start. The past season's failings have washed away but still there is a sour taste in my heart and mind that I need to purge. Every year my preseason prediction is the same.....the Redskins will win the Super Bowl. Plain and simple. And why not? In a league of parity, anything is possible. I'm getting so excited about this season that I can barely contain myself.

Tomorrow is going to be a special day....one that I'm going to remember until my dying day. It will be my first Father's Day with my eleven month old...and my four year old makes EVERY day a wonder.

But I have to say, opening day is going to be outrageous.

And it's there that I found the answer to my question this morning.

EVERY day, to a father, is "Father's day".

But during football season, every Sunday is too.

Bring it on.

I respect that and think it would be cool to have it be on the opening day of football season because during the redskins game on sundays is when teh whole family comes together to share something special that has been shared through generations.

My dad comes back tomorrow morning from a 2month long trip from new zealand, can't wait to see him.

O and I just found out that the father's day in Australia and New Zealand falls on teh first sunday in September (a.k.a opening day).
