Anybody been in a keeper league? I'm starting one up this year with some friends but I'm not exactly sure how its done... here's some questions I was hoping you could help me with... (we're doing a 12 team league)

1) How many players did you keep?

2) Did you penalize for keeping players? For instance, if you keep someone you drafted 2nd round... then you forfeit your second round draft pick.

3) How did you deal with a player leaving? Did you give the new person his roster and allowed him to keep a certain number and hten just keep going. Or did you set up an expansion draft and keep one less person and let that team start fresh?

Thanks! Any other insight would be appreciated.

I'll try to answer in general terms as there are any number of ways to do a keeper league

1) Standard is 3 but it's really up to you/the league.

2) Standard is to "charge" three rounds above where the player was drafted the previous year. (i.e.: if you drafted Colston in the 15th round last year, he would cost you a 12th round pick in this yr's draft)

any player drafted in the first 3 rounds cannot be kept and goes back into the player pool.

3) In a free league, I guess it would just be a handoff from one owner to another. In a $$ league, usually they are paid up one year in advance (so for the 1st year of a $100 league, you pony up 200 bucks) Then if the owner leaves, his team is paid for the following year and you can work out getting a new owner.

Depends on how you want to start and what are the basis of the owners...
I like building the teams. Say 2 keepers this year and then let the owners keep 3,4,5 etc each following year.
I would recommend that you get feedback from the owners. Everyone has experiences that they can share and that will keep them invested.
KEEP IT SIMPLE.. Scoring and rules should be relatively standard. People will try a league with odd rules but typically not stay in one for more than a year.

alot of choices here.

I am in akeeper league (10 team) where last year we drafted 18 players + 2 rookies

the rookies are on my roster again this year and next
of the 18 players I drafted last year
1 I keep for 4 years
2 I keep for 3 years
3 I keep for 2 years
4 I keep for this year
8 I cut into free agency

this year I draft 2 more rookies that stay with me for 3 years
I Also draft 8 more players

at the end of this year I have to give out 4 one year contracts to those players who are not already on contract (can't re-up someone each year so if they had a contract expire then they are free agent in the next years draft pool)

Next year my 2 year contracts also expire so I will have to hand out 7 contracts (4 one year and 3 two year)

Takes alot of planning and a lot of luck

at the end of last year I set my keepers as:

Rookies
Holmes, Santonio WR PIT
White, LenDale RB TEN

4 Year
Fitzgerald, Larry WR ARI

3 Year
Johnson, Larry RB KC
Bulger, Marc QB STL

2 Year
Heap, Todd TE BAL
Betts, Ladell RB WAS
Burress, Plaxico WR NYG

1 Year
Coles, Laveranues WR NYJ
Driver, Donald WR GB
Foster, DeShaun RB CAR
Jones, Kevin RB DET

hi i created a keeper league last year, it was a huge success.

1. In my league the managers got the option to keep 3-5 players.
2. In my league if you got a player in the 12th, the next year you kept him in the 12th. So you kept the same round from last year.
3. We had 2 people leave my league this year and we just found new players to replace them and just gave them the two players who left rosters.

1/2 ) I'm entering the 4th year of the keeper league I'm in and we do it pretty simple.

12 teams, every team keeps 4 players. PERIOD. After the keepers are declared people can trade their keepers or draft picks, but 48 players are always kept.

We have no restrictions on keeping players, e.g. LT, S-Jax will be kept until retirement basically. It has worked out great, people can get seriously attached to 'their boys'. It can really spur on the lesser teams to grab the next big thing out of college over the more established players. There are certainly a few teams that have loved the rebuilding process.

3) We've had two owner changes so far, and in each case the new owners were given the former owners season ending roster and then had to pick 4 players from that team.

Our keeper league has been going strong since 1996. It is a great way to go if you have dedicated owners. There are million ways to set it up but this is what has worked for us.

6 keepers- This allows you to build a dynasty while at the same time having good players available every year at the draft.

No salaries, no time restrictions...makes it really cool when you pick up a rookie like Randy Moss (yours truely) with a late pick. I have had him and Edgerrin James for years even though their best days are behind them now.

For new guys we use a formula that involves picking one player from the team he is taking over, one player who nobody drafted (current rookies not included) and one player from players that were left uprotected. The remaining three players were picked up at various rounds in the draft.
