There's a little of Bill Parcells in Wade Phillips after all.

In a move that ran counter to his image as a laid-back coach, Phillips on Saturday publicly berated the Dallas Cowboys for the first time at training camp.

The scolding, which included profanity and a passionate speech about personal accountability, came after several players arrived late for special-teams drills at the start of the afternoon workout.

Phillips was visibly animated while standing in the middle of the Alamodome field with the players surrounding him. At one point, he made a swift punching motion while his eyes darted from player to player.

His anger didn't end there. After practice, he made the offenders stand in front of the team and explain their tardiness.

Rookie fullback Deon Anderson was among the offenders.

"I didn't realize when practices were starting, and coaches were flipping out," Anderson said. "I'm like, '(expletive).' Now coach is pissed off at the whole team because of what I did."

Anderson said he thought Phillips, who replaced the retired Parcells, was going to hit him.

"Then he took a step back and regrouped," Anderson said. "He said, 'This stuff can't happen. You guys have to be accountable for your actions.'"

Phillips, whose soft-spoken demeanor stands in sharp contrast to his predecessor's tough-guy style, has been criticized for running what some observers have labeled "Camp Cupcake."

If the tongue-lashing Phillips delivered was designed to squelch such talk, he accomplished his goal, players said.

"It wasn't the message, it was the principle — quit taking advantage of the situation," Kevin Burnett said.

Bradie James suggested Phillips is tired of hearing all the talk about him being soft.

"Camp has been tough," James said. "We have had more practices this year than before. But coach has been getting criticized, and for those guys to be late, he took it personal. It was disrespectful."

Several key players, including Terrell Owens  , Jason Witten and Tony Romo, addressed the team after practice about the need to be accountable.

"He will treat you like a man until you don't treat him like one by doing things like being late," Romo said of Phillips. "He will tell you about it. And if it happens a second time, he will cut the guy."

so i guess he'll be cutting TO after his first outburst

I bet during his tirade none of the players took him seriously. It was probably comical to them. :)

A wise choice by the team... a very wise choice. I'm sure they don't want anymore swift punching motions and darting eyes. Oh the horror.

For some reason Wade going on profanity laced tirade brought a vision of Yosemite Sam to my mind. I kinda picture TO as Bugs in this scenario.

Rookie fullback Deon Anderson was among the offenders.

He screamed at a rookie fullback and two other who likely won't make the team...oh wow...

Norv Turner screamed at Andre Johnson, and at Michael Westbrook, when he attacked Stephen Davis. What's the point? It doesn't make him a good HC!

I don't think temper tantrums involving invisible punches is gonna garner that much respect. :)

If he doesn't have it by now... he's not gonna get it.

Personally, I am not with the rest if the Skins fans thinking he does not have it. I do think if this year screws up with the Boys, its Jerry's fault and no one elses.

But, if this team does start to gain respect for him, they will be a force.

Put it this way, when we had Schotty here for that year, no one respected him, but as soon as they did we pulled off one of the best combacks during a season in NFL history. The same could happen here, although I am hoping it doesn't.

You guys are missing the most important point.

Having to get up in front of the entire team and explain why you were late. Its not just the 2 guys that were late that get the message on that... the entire team picks up on the fact that, rather than having to be accountable to the grumpy old coach (Parcells), now you're held accountable by the entire team.

I don't know about you guys but having to get up in front of all of my teammates and explain why I wasn't doing what needed to be done is great motivation to do the right thing.

Whoop-de-doo. Again Turner did this. He was still a pushover.

And he choose a a rookie fullback and two players who weren't named - probably b/c they are camp fodder. This isn't news, and if you're so desperate to prove that Wade isn't puppet, pushover, retread and really want to take hold of this, be my guest.

What's going to happen when TO starts mouthing off? Or shows up late? What's going to happen when he has to discipline someone who is of actual value to the team?

Here's an idea:

It is easier to come in hard and become easy than it is to come in easy and become hard.

I have never liked this form of discipline. The players should be disciplined behind the scenes for an infraction such as this.

And I agree that making examples of camp fodder doesn't really do anthing because the Vets will see it for what it is.

You know i think overall Wade Phillips will be a good fit for the Cowboys, but part of me feels that this might be a short tenure here for him. For one Jerry Jones is still to hands on, and he wont be ablt to resist going after Cowher next year. Secondly, im wondering becaus we all know its just a matter of time to when TO is going to start blowing up at him. We all know he has a far different stance that what the Tuna had. To watch TO personally degrate him in the media wouldnt suprise me just because of the attitude that Coach Phillips has with his laid back approach. As much as i hate the cowboys i cant deny that i feel the fit is good im just wondering how long it will last for?

I may be mistaken because it's training camp, but don't players get fines and/or suspensions for missing time? It really does seem like a publicity stunt to me. Why not keep it out of the press in general? Were media types actually catching these guys being late? If not why even point this stuff out? If so, why not just state that they've been disciplined and move on?

It wasn't introduced to the media. The media started questioning Wade's tirade after the practice was over and the players wound up answering the questions that made the story.

Wade was quoted as saying:

"It's really an internal matter," Phillips said. "It's taken care of. How I handle my players and take care of my team is my own way."

The point is it got into the media. The head coach should have taken care that it was handled internally. A head coach in control handles situations internally. Look around the league at teams like the Patriots and Colts. You don't see or hear stories like this. They handle it in house and it stays there. The skins do the same thing under Gibbs. Players and coaches that run their mouth don't play or coach for the skins very long. It's about respect for the team and coaching staff.

Actually the most important part is whether or not Wade's easy-going ways are starting to effect how seriously players take him and his practices. For some reason, I highly doubt that this was just about a few players arriving late for special teams practice...maybe he's starting to wonder himself if the players are taking advantage of his coaching style.

Then again, he could always have another barbeque or pose with some more beautiful women or get the mascot to kick a few more field goals. That'll get everyone's attention and make them shape up!

everything gets into the media. Parcells chewed players out in front of the media constantly, nobody here said a word about it being bad. Heck the skins draft plan was leaked to the media when they drafted Campbell. Things like this get mentioned it just happens.

The part I find amusing is it is not Redskin fans that made these Dallas Camp names up. Here's a realistic look:

Dallas has gone 11-10 over the last 21 games, including the playoffs, with a top-3 receiver, the "most talented team in the NFL", a "beast" of a running back, a defensive "monster" on their squad, and the next Tom Brady behind center.

The Skins have gone 12-9 over the last 21 games, including the playoffs. with only one "worthwhile" receiver, a QB who hadn't started in 10 years, another QB who "nobody in the NFL wants on their roster", two different coaches--one of which had never coached before, an "overrated" running back who was "wearing down", the death of their best defensive player, an old, injury plagued O-line that looked like a M.A.S.H. unit, and barely enough talent to warrant one or two Pro Bowl nods.

I don't know exactly what caused that 12-1 start 2 years ago, but it was definitely NOT due to Wade's alledgedly getting "tough" lol :)

There will be no T.O saying 'that's my quarterback' this year. However, Romo could go on the record by saying 'that's my leader, that's my coach, and I wouldn't want him gone for the world' after another chokefest in the playoffs this year.
