Blake Carves a Niche in the NBA
Jeff Barker of the BALTIMORE SUN writes, "Steve Blake created his NBA niche largely on character. The Blazers, trying to reconnect with fans after a spate of player misconduct in recent years, said they wanted Blake because he's grounded. Although Blake's career scoring average is only 6.4 points, the team's front office saw him as a prototype for the unselfish, blue-collar culture it is trying to create. He's proof that today's NBA teams - out of necessity - evaluate players on more than just statistics.

I always liked the kids game. We could still use a player like him here.

Yeah, should have never let him go in the first place. He showed quite a bit his rookie season when Gil got hurt.

Portland really pisses me off because they reach into Paul Allen's deep pockets and buy draft picks left and right on draft day. I hope Darius Miles has the whole team hitting the bong hard by the end of the season.

Blake can get over matched by more physcal guards and can be slow.Great with set shots, but appears a few seconds too slow at times.

Well, if I remember correctly a year ago he had a knack for locking down the "The Guard of Guards." Kobe Bryant (bitter ass dude, who was bitter because Gil dropped 60 on him..  )

ROFL. That's exactly what all of those big words and adjectives spell out. "blue collar", "unselfish", "reconnecting with (white) fanbase"

That's even better then. Maybe he'll get Jarret Jack so high before our next game against Portland that Arenas finally drops 50 on him.

Doesnt matter...The perception is that he is a well grounded white guy who would never do such a thing...kindof like the "this never happens in our neighborhood" thing I hear every day on the news.

Yeah, and so are probably more the 1/2 the rest of the league. Wasnt there a big to do over the drug testing during the last strike? They didnt want random testing. I wonder why? :munchout:

It is about the way he plays the game on the court, not what is smokes off the court. I dont ever remember hearing his name involved in any controvesy.

The kid has been jerked around so much it has to have affected his game. But when he settles in, he plays well.

He should be at that point in his career that he has learned what the league is about and how to play in different systems. If he stays put for 2 years and gets 25-30 mins a game, I think he will produce good numbers. He is in year 5 after getting speratic minutes here and being injuried. Then he got bounded to Port, Milk and fanially got some burn in Denver where he produced.

He put up good number for Denver in the playoffs last year.

Blake told the Rocky Mountain News that he decided to return to Portland because the Nuggets appeared on the verge of finalizing a contract with guard Chucky Atkins.

Dame. Was he bounced from here because of Atkins before he left 2 weeks into the season or am I off by a year?

The move makes the Blazers deep at point guard, with Blake, Jarrett Jack and Sergio Rodriguez, as well as Brandon Roy, the NBA's Rookie of the Year, who played the point at times last season.

So why do they want Blake is they have Jarrett Jack.

I guess they believe in having talent deep on the bench. Their PF/C situation is very similar.

I don't get why the Nugs replaced Blake with Atkins. Blake has Atkins's main skill (perimeter shooting) along with things like defense and passing ability that that team really needs.
