Guys,
We havent given up a touchdown yet this year....
An omen for a better D?
Or chalk it up to its just preseason?

No given up TDs is great. But we still lost a game with 4 FGs. It comes down to wins in the end, not stats.

It's a great sign, and the defense has performed excellent regarless of the loss to the 2nd and 3rd string kicking game for Pittsburgh.

D is playing well, but it is only preseason. as long as teh offense moves the ball we should be good to go.

It's meaningful. Those who want to discount preseason performance clearly haven't been paying attention. The defense looks very good and we should feel good about it this season, based on what we've seen so far. If the defense were getting pounded, then we should be worried.
So, let's be glad the defense looks this good so far. The way this team has played in the recent past, it has a lot to prove. If they keep it up this preseason, they'll go into the regular season with a lot of confidence.
Yes, the preseason can be meaningful if you approach it properly. Last year we didn't, this year we are.

Well said. Also, going into the regular season playing good defense can buy the offense a little more time to get into a rhythm and get their timing down. (I'm thinking of the start of the 2005 season, for example.)

While I understand that this preseason, and all the stats are a little askew because of it, I do think that this is a big deal. As of right now I believe the skins are the only team that has yet to give up a TD, which means that even though other defenses are only seeing vanilla offenses they are still able to get into the endzone. Also I think that this can and will be used to build upon something for the regular season.
If this team is able to stay healthy :fingersx: and that is a big if, I think that this defense could be ranked in the top 5 again this year. :2cents:

I was thinking the same thing last night. It's definitely a good omen. The 1st team defense hasn't allowed a TD and neither has anyone else. GW preaches a total team effort, and when even the 3rd stringers don't give up a touchdown, it speaks to the success in general of his philosophy. As a result, the whole team buys into what Williams is trying to do, and that creates team unity.
Think of it this way. Sure it's preseason, but if the defense had given up 10 touchdowns by now, we'd all be hysterical at how bad they look. So since they haven't allowed a touchdown, why can't we say that they're looking good?

I know it is only preseason, but, last year in preseason, our D was getting killed (41-7 by the pats), they looked sloppy last year and weren't attacking the ball nearly as much as they are now. Our D will be very good this year, I see us being in the top 10 or better (top 5) this year. If this happens, this team will win 9-10 games because the offense will be better.

The above posters stated what I wanted to say.
I am just following the rules of not quoting lots of text.
I think it is meaningful........and is the beginning of stabilty and growth as a defense.

We won't know how meaningful it is until the regular season.
The defense was great in the 04 preseason and it carried over into the regular season.
The defense was also great in 93 (last time we had back to back games without a TD surrendered) but it was bad in the regular season.
I do tend to believe that with this group it's a good omen because we have a ton of younger players who are playing well (Golston, McIntosh, Rogers, Taylor, Landry) and are not relying on aging veterans like we were in 93.
Fingers crossed but it looks like Gregg Williams has his defense, if not back, at least in the neighborhood of playing at 04/05 levels.

The defense seems to be playing with a lot more fire and confidence.I like what I have seen.If they stay even semi-healthy they could be a top 7or8 Def.

The one thing, if I had to nitpick, that concerns me is the lack of turnovers - again. I don't know what it is, but Gregg Williams' defenses - even when finishing in the top 5 in the league - never force a lot of turnovers. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only turnover the Redskins have "forced" so far this preseason was the botched snap in the Titans game - essentially a gift from a backup center.

Although it is preseason, this d is playing with intensity and confidence. We are seeing signs of this being a very good D. They a gang tackling, flying to the ball, corners tackled one on one all night. The D line was getting some pressure and the LB's looked incredible (Special thanks to the Bears for saving us from ourselves this offseason, no wonder they wanted Rocky). All signs are pointing to us finding our MLB of the future and (off topic) at least a good backup OT in the later rounds and udfa pickups. These are the types of finds we have been lacking and looking for.
Anyways this will be a good D this year. I am not ready to predict a ranging above top half, too much can happen.
It is time for the negatives to ease it up a bit, I know you want the ability to say "I have been saying" when the time comes if they suck, but lighten up a bit it is getting tiring.

Looking at the box score from last night, then looking at the one from last week. The D (all strings) haven't given up a TD yet. Even with a few goal line stands.
We know this is preseason, and things can change. But, what happened has been going "right" with this side of the ball? Is it the scaled back schemes that Coach Williams spoke about? Is it the addition of more DB's, and guys like Marshall being a 2nd string LB? Maybe the big stops that Blades had last night?
We haven't been getting the turnovers yet really, or sacking the QB. But, it does seem that we're stopping plenty of drives, and making some good stands.
What can we thank for this so far?

Would like to see more QB pressure, even if not a sack. But the D has looked good so far, especially the Backers and DB's. We have physical corners, secondary period. Now the O has to put some points on the board.

Two things:
A) This D is so much faster sideline to sideline then it was last year. The speed is very evident
2) You can see the impact LFB has. Teams cannot run anywhere at all, and he cleans up any mess left. I think the Steelers longest run against our first team may have been a Big Ben scramble late in the 2nd quarter for 10 yards

Agreed!... and another stat:
In the last 6 preseason games... Collins - 3TD's/Other QB's - 0

Wow, what a come back from last year! I just checked the NFL.com standings and we are #2 in the Points allowed department with only 18 points in two games!! The Ravens are #1 with 3 points in one game followed by chicago in 1 game of 19 points. Besides the Ravens, we are the only team to not give up a TD so far whether it be 1st/2nd/3rd string. Very, VERY Impressive.
With that said, once our offense gets it together...we could be in for a very good season with the way the defense is playing. Here's to the health of JC and wonderful defensive play this year!

our defense could be a beast this year. Rocky looks good, Landry looks good. I think our DLine does need to get more pressure though

Defense is going to be solid this year but the steelers did rip one long pass play on them. Tackling has been solid!!! Fletcher,Landry,Mcintosh good Improvements!!! D-line is still just average!!!

That's double interesting considering we're playing the Ravens next. Let's see how our Offense looks against them.
I'm loving the way our D is playing.

Im very excited at how the defense is playing..And all of you people that say its just preseason, if the defense would have given up 3 TD's then there would be 100 threads on here that we're doomed..I said it last week that its just preseason when our offense didn't look good, and i'll say it now that our defense looks great..It is just preseason, but its nice to see our starters play this great so far!

It is just the preseason and what we're seeing defensively may not directly translate to a Top 5 or Top 10 defense, but, having just watched the first half, you clearly see just what the staff knew about last year. The defensive line is fine. It is winning individual battles and handling things. The back seven did very little last year to help. With everyone flying around in the back seven, shooting gaps and just seeming so fast, it's the kind of thing you can't help but feel relieved by.
The key to being competitive is that defense. Nothing else. Those guys are whipping their men. That removes scheme from the process. They are simply winning the individual battles. We didn't do that last year very much. It's very comforting at this point.

This team can stop the run. But they just can't stop the pass. One reason they didn't give up a TD last night was because the Steelers stopped their own drive. Big Ben had a false start at the 2 yard line and that set them back to the 7. Several mistakes by the Steelers offense resulted in missed opportunities. This is the same Skins defense from last year except the run stopping ability is back. They will have a VERY hard time stopping teams on 3rd down....just like last night...because they cannot stop the pass.

I love what i'm seeing from this defense so far. The only thing I want to see to make me legitimately happy is to see them force and capatilize on turnovers. Then I'll be a true believer.
