MRI: No Damage In Campbell's Knee

By Mark Maske
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, August 20, 2007; E01

Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell suffered nothing more serious than a bruise during Saturday night's preseason game, tests reaffirmed yesterday. Campbell underwent a late-morning MRI exam that showed no serious damage, team officials said.

Campbell and Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs said it will be determined later in the week whether Campbell will play Saturday's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

"Nine times out of 10 when you see that, it's usually something worse," Campbell said as he left Redskins Park early in the evening. "It's usually something torn. . . . It's a day-to-day thing. We'll just see where it's at by the weekend."

Linebacker Marcus Washington, who suffered a dislocated right elbow late in the first half of Saturday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at FedEx Field, will miss the Ravens game and perhaps more. He said he's hopeful of returning in about two weeks.

"I've already made some strides since [Saturday] night," said Washington, who left the team's training facility with his right arm in a sling. "If I keep going like that, I'll be all right."

The team's players and coaches spent the afternoon in meetings and watching the tapes of Saturday's game, in which the Redskins starters exited with a lead but the Steelers got three fourth-quarter field goals to win, 12-10. Mostly, the Redskins were relieved they emerged with their young starting quarterback still intact.

"It was scary, but fortunately it seems like he's going to be okay," said tailback Clinton Portis, who sat out a second straight preseason game because of a bothersome knee. "I always feel safer on the sideline."

Campbell was hit on the outside of his left leg by Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel, who stumbled and dove at the quarterback after slipping past Redskins rookie left tackle Stephon Heyer. Campbell said his knee wasn't as swollen yesterday as he expected it to be, and he walked toward his car in the parking lot without a severe limp. He said he hadn't tested the knee by trying to run.

"I'm sure he's going to be sore for a while," Gibbs said. "We'll go on a day-to-day basis. But I think we came out of that about as good as we could have expected."

Said Campbell, "I know my heart jumped when it first happened."

The low hit by Keisel drew a 15-yard penalty. Such hits on quarterbacks are prohibited by the NFL, and Keisel also could be fined. An NFL spokesman said yesterday the play hadn't been reviewed yet. Campbell said the hit "didn't look good on film," but he remained willing to believe that it wasn't an intentional attempt to hurt him because Keisel apologized to him as Campbell left the field after the injury.

Campbell said it was too soon to know whether he would play next weekend. Gibbs said he considers it important for a young quarterback to get preseason playing time, but acknowledged that he'll evaluate Campbell differently this week than he would during the regular season.

Todd Collins replaced Campbell and threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Brandon Lloyd in a 10-for-13 passing performance. Mark Brunell finished the game.

"It was pretty good," Collins said of the offense's performance while he was on the field. "It wasn't perfect."

I second that. Always good to have the pros do their check to make sure thing and then say things are okay.

Awesome, now I can put down this wooden spoon that I've been using to try to cut my wrists.

Just a heads up, Redskins.com has interviews with our three injured stars: Campbell, Washington, and Samuels (listed under Player Interviews). I know I felt a little better watching it.

I think that it's a very good sign that he can take that hit and be fine. That was a nasty hit. Perhaps he is durable!

Nice to see an article from Maske.

And great, great news. I hope Campbell sits for the rest of the preseason

Like I said...."Campbell said that the hit didn't look good on film" The apology comment was just to cover what he really thinks. "It didn't look good on film..." is basically saying that he Keisel shouldn't have lunged at Campbell's legs.

We really dodged a bullet here. This could have been a disaster.

Well, my prayers have been answered. Even the update on Marcus sounds promising.

Getting the news from Maske is the cherry on top :)

I am soo glad Campbell is OK. I have to tell you guys as soon as I saw him being helped to the sideline I took off from my seat in section 101 and run down to the bottom to find out how bad it was. I stood there watching the trainers work on him on the bench and knew he was going to be ok. Soon after I got there I was told by security to get back to my seat.

as much as i think he should sit, he gets better every time he takes the field, he is young and he needs experience. Unfortunately, that means playing on the field.

Yeah that was a huge bullet dodged. I must say i felt the forming of tears in my eyes seeing him rolling around grabbing his knee after seeing it happen on the very edge of the screen. Thinking for the 2nd year in a row a very key piece to the season was lost before it even started. I felt sick to my stomach as im sure many people felt the same way.

Great news. Sit him for Baltimore and then play him for a couple of series in the last preseason game, and that's it.

This might be a blessing in disguise. He should sit out against the Ravens. I have a feeling they're going to cream the next guy. This would be a good 'trial by fire' game to decide the #2, #3. It'd also be good to see if Palmer is practice squad worthy.

Dude better man up, he's got a season to play. He better take some snaps in the preseason or I'd rather have Betts start in his place. He can't just sit on the sideline, not practice and still get to be ahead of Betts after Ladell puts in all the work.

Kinda concerned about Marcus Washington though...and how much it will effect his game or ability to tackle/make plays. Great news about Jason though. When he was walking on his own power and back on the sidelines and not in an aircast or anything i figured he'd be ok, but this confirmation is great.

When I was watching that game with my girlfriend, it's like time just froze and whatever she was saying to me when that hit was made on Campbell just flew in one ear and out the other... As bad as that sounds, I just love the Redskins lol :helmet:

Man we are so fortunate that it was just a bruise and not a torn ACL or MCL!

Enough's enough. Our man has been belted way too many times in two preseason games. I know he needs more experience, but I say let Brunell/Collins/Palmer lead the offense these last two.

to put a positive spin on this maybe its a sign that campbell is more flexible than some and will be less sucseptible to injury over his career.

I figured Campbell's knee was going to be ok after he was walking on it, and it was reported that it was only a bruise. What really makes my day is the news on Washington. I figured he's be out 8 weeks. Only 2 weeks? Giddy up!

It sounds like only the last 2 weeks of the preseason

He should be ready for Miami, however I do not think it would hurt to hold him out until the Giants game and having a bye in there

In the article, it stated that he could be ready in 2 weeks, i.e. in time for the season opener. He might miss the Dolphins game but not more than that. He may also have to play with a protective cast.

Seeing that hit happen live was the biggest buzzkill I had ever experienced. Thank goodness that it was not serious.
