Friedgen will try to play Portis; Egekeze, Baltz winner kicker, punter battles

Maryland junior Jordan Steffy today was named the Terps' starting quarterback for 2007, coach Ralph Friedgen said.
Steffy, who has taken the majority of the reps in the preseason, met with Friedgen in his office for about 20 minutes before practice today.
Friedgen said Steffy "widened the gap" between he and Florida transfer Josh Portis, who will be the backup. "I think Jordan is ahead," Friedgen said. "I think he has been ahead since the spring."
Friedgen said he will attempt to play Portis in games. "I told Jordan not to be concerned about that," he said. "He's earned his spot."
