"What I'm buying into is the team vibe," Portis said. "We're 2-1, and if we can find a way to go out and play as a team, all that wanting the ball and this or that, I'll be fine. I just want to win."

This quote is from the Washingtonpost of this morning which I'm sure many of you have read.

Tell me what you're taking from this quote.:helmet:

From that comment, I assume Portis is not the leader of this team. The leaders always wants the ball in his hand and win the game...the leader knows, Portis being the best RB on the teams, that he gives us our best chance to win. Yet he doesn't care if he gets the ball?

We have no leader on offense.

Washington has just five touchdowns and has yet to score 21 points -- and has yet to resemble the unit that churned through opponents in the second half of 2006.

I don't remember us churning through opponents on offense any time in recent memory.

That is not at all what I read! I read a guy who said he wants to WIN. He doesn't care how. He will not ***** and complain that he is not getting the ball, he is letting the coaches do there thing and play 110% when he is called.

I think that is a leader and telling the entire team to "trust the coaches".

I honestly think your statement was dumb. So I guess you want Campbell to complain and want to throw every ball. You also want Moss to complain to have every ball come to him. Randle El too?

What? Portis is our best RB. You know what's dumb? I think it's dumb that Betts was in the final minutes of the game last week. That's dumb.

Portis get some fire under your a** and demand to be in the game in those situations.

I had started to think that maybe CP was whining too much about the media and whoever...

But damn...He is damned if he does and damned if he don't.

"GIVE ME THE BALL" = He is selfish and doesn't want to do what is asked of him.

"I don't complain,I do what is asked" = He isn't a leader if he doesn't ***** about getting the ball.

He has a different view (only) because we are used to selfish players.Does anyone REALLY question his desire or effort ??? PPAAALLLEEEEZEEE

Do you not think by Portis' willingness to sacrifice his carries for the good of the team is being a "leader"?

You didn't hear the rest of what he had to say, did you?

He always wants the ball. He makes that clear. When he's on the field and doesn't get the ball, though, he's the hardest blocker. He's the first one down to take care of whatever other business needs to get done on a particular play.

A leader doesn't cry like a child when someone else gets the ball. A leader plays 100% regardless what the play is. Teammates see that and feed off it.

Hey Peyton Manning, be a leader and sacrifice some throws for Jim Sorgi.
My point is, our best RB is on the bench when the game is on the line. Our best RB doesn't care who's in the game in those situations? IMO, this team needs to develope some arrogance. Without that killer attitude we are destined to avg. below 20 points a game.

Only the true pessimist could find a flaw in such a selfless quote. Bravo.

No doubt about it..when in the game, Clinton is tough as nails and runs hard every play. Maybe I need to look more at the coaches then at Portis.

Nothing to see here carry on. On second thought...someone on offense needs to say get me the ball, I want to win. Not, I want to win but I dont have to be in the game.

This team just needs to win games. Arrogance is great when you're winning. When you're losing arrogance makes you a cancer. Arrogance should be the result of playing well, not the cause of it. Portis understands this. And that makes him a leader.

Maybe the dumbest post i have read in my time on this board. Pouting like a child when you don't get carries will split the team apart and cause a rift in the offense between players and coaches. EVERYONE knows portis wants the ball, that includes the coaching staff. However portis understands that winning is the most important thing and if that means splitting time with betts then so be it.

I understand your point that you want portis in on the goal line, everyone wanted him on the goal line but we wouldn't be complaining if betts got in now would we and thats the point. As long as we win the size of each players contribution really doesn't matter.

And yea the team does need to develop a winning attitude and put opponents away. We need to push and push until the 4th and if we aren't up by more than 17 points in the 4th quarter than we need to push some more.

He's being politically correct, he is not allowing the media to take his words and twist them into a controversy to sell papers. he's being smart. he knows what the premise of his interview is, a story about how the running game fell apart in the 4th quarter collapse against the Giants. Pretty simple.

I agree though, we are not using either RB in the game long enough to be effective in the 4th quarter. We need to go full board with Portis ... and once we have established the running game and worn the defense down a bit, JC can start spreading the ball around on play-action, and Betts should come into spell Portis from time to time. Enough of this democratic, equal carries, both our RB's are starters BS ... they are professional and don't need their egos to be coddled just to prevent any disgruntled feelings. give the ball to our best player, Portis, and ride him until he needs a break.

Arrogance doesn't win ballgames. Attitude helps...but execution wins ball games and we did not execute the two run plays like we should have. The Giants defense was just better on those two plays.

I think you're making too much of that particular quote. The guy wants to win the ball game and he's trusting his hall of fame coach to use him the best possible way. The quote that does bug me, though, is the one from Betts saying that he feels like he's going into the game "cold" sometimes. I think it's time for the running-back-by-committee thing to go bye-bye. Pick one to be the feature back and stick with it.
