IRVING — Linebacker Greg Ellis’ return to field Sunday for the first time since rupturing his Achilles’ tendon in November coincided with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones finally restructuring Ellis’ contract and giving him the commitment he had been asking for since the spring.

According to a source, Ellis’ agent Butch Williams was in town over the weekend and hammered out a deal the two sides had been working on for about two weeks.

Terms of the deal were not released, but the source said Ellis didn’t get any years added to his contract, which runs through 2009. Instead, some of his base salary was given to him now as a bonus.

Ellis’ base salary of $2.5 million already was guaranteed for this season.

The deal had to be done by 3 p.m. Saturday in order for it to take effect for Sunday’s game. Ellis had 1 1/2 sacks and two tackles in the Cowboys’ 35-7 win over St. Louis.

“The Cowboys committed the way Greg wanted them to commit,” the source said. “That is why he was on the field. That is why he is [playing]. That is why he is happy.”

It was certainly a stark contrast from Ellis’ attitude Thursday when he said didn’t think he was healthy enough to play Sunday despite coach Wade Phillips saying he was ready to go.

Ellis said then that he needed to sit down and talk to Phillips and Jones. He said there were things the team could do to get him on the field.

But rather than a pain killer, as most suspected Ellis was talking about, the Cowboys gave him the financial boost and security he sought.

Ellis is still not 100 percent, and he played only on passing downs against the Rams. But he gave the Cowboys an immediate return on their investment.

Are talks of retirement over?

“We can get rid of that thought,” said Ellis, happy and smiling in the post-game locker room. “They say this thing takes a year to come back from, and I’m really at 10 months. But playing a limited role like this, I should be fine.”

Jones was “elated” to see Ellis’ first sack.

“He has always had a long-term future with the team,” Jones said. “We’ve got long-term plans and long-term things in play.”

Ellis played mainly on third down, and he said Phillips had to talk him out of playing more.

“I have to learn what I can do. I’m a veteran, and veterans have to adapt,” Ellis said.

Right outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware had four tackles and a sack.

End Marcus Spears shared one of the sacks with Ellis.

Carlos Mendez contributed to this report.

Win-win-loss.

Win for Ellis, he finally gets his money.

Win for Jones, he doesn't really break the bank.

Loss for opposing offenses.

Not sure how Jerry caved when he didnt get any additional money or years on the contract.

But run with that. It will help you forget the 4-0 start.

Ellis deserved the deal and his presence will definitely improve the teams pass rush. I can only wonder how good they might have been had Jerrah not tried to cheap out.

Dang I wish he'd kept that wallet closed. Perhaps Romo should have used Ellis' tactic for a new deal.

Oh, and I'm sure its your #1 NFL wish that Dallas resigns Romo.

Seriously, I'd love to hear the spin on how Dallas would be better off letting him walk.

Its a 16 game season, dont forget that. As much as I hate the pukes and their waste of sperm fans I do think they are a good team. I have a funny feeling that everything will fall apart for the pukes, just too early to tell. Tony Romo is a great qb for the pukes and they are blowing teams away only time will tell.

He appears good enough that I think they should have already signed him. I suggested he should have used Ellis' tactic to get his deserved money!

Not you D, that question was posed to tr1 who is "hoping" Dallas resigns Romo before the NE game.

Apologies for leading you to believe it was directed towards you. I didn't quote tr.

My bad.

JJ caved and made the defense better by putting his ego aside... and didn't impact the cap when he did it...

guess that is just too foreign for people watching Snyder for too long...

So he was holding out for cash?

Nice, hopefully some other Puke players take notice of this and start running up the Pukes cap.

I think it's really retarded that you guys haven't locked Romo up yet. What more does the guy have to do. That's what perplexes me.

I think he was just holding out for the money on his existing deal to be guarenteed....so he didn't want more money.

To be honest, both parties probably agreed to wait till the end of the season. There is really no benifit for him getting the deal done now, unless he gets hurt, cause his value goes up every week. Not to mention if his agent begins negotiations, it may become a distraction. Reguardless, Romo isn't going any where.

Miracle cure? Amazing what a little cash will do. It always made me feel much better.

We said the same thing about a certain guard, and look where he is on our line now. :(
