IRVING — Linebacker Greg Ellis’ return to field Sunday for the first time since rupturing his Achilles’ tendon in November coincided with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones finally restructuring Ellis’ contract and giving him the commitment he had been asking for since the spring.
According to a source, Ellis’ agent Butch Williams was in town over the weekend and hammered out a deal the two sides had been working on for about two weeks.
Terms of the deal were not released, but the source said Ellis didn’t get any years added to his contract, which runs through 2009. Instead, some of his base salary was given to him now as a bonus.
Ellis’ base salary of $2.5 million already was guaranteed for this season.
The deal had to be done by 3 p.m. Saturday in order for it to take effect for Sunday’s game. Ellis had 1 1/2 sacks and two tackles in the Cowboys’ 35-7 win over St. Louis.
“The Cowboys committed the way Greg wanted them to commit,” the source said. “That is why he was on the field. That is why he is [playing]. That is why he is happy.”
It was certainly a stark contrast from Ellis’ attitude Thursday when he said didn’t think he was healthy enough to play Sunday despite coach Wade Phillips saying he was ready to go.
Ellis said then that he needed to sit down and talk to Phillips and Jones. He said there were things the team could do to get him on the field.
But rather than a pain killer, as most suspected Ellis was talking about, the Cowboys gave him the financial boost and security he sought.
Ellis is still not 100 percent, and he played only on passing downs against the Rams. But he gave the Cowboys an immediate return on their investment.
Are talks of retirement over?
“We can get rid of that thought,” said Ellis, happy and smiling in the post-game locker room. “They say this thing takes a year to come back from, and I’m really at 10 months. But playing a limited role like this, I should be fine.”
Jones was “elated” to see Ellis’ first sack.
“He has always had a long-term future with the team,” Jones said. “We’ve got long-term plans and long-term things in play.”
Ellis played mainly on third down, and he said Phillips had to talk him out of playing more.
“I have to learn what I can do. I’m a veteran, and veterans have to adapt,” Ellis said.
Right outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware had four tackles and a sack.
End Marcus Spears shared one of the sacks with Ellis.
