View Full Version : The DL Better Show Up Sunday.

KingGibbs
October-4th-2007, 07:56 AM
The defensive line has an opportunity this weekend to either erase some doubts or raise even more questions. They are facing a Lions team that has given up TWENTY-ONE, that's right, TWENTY-ONE sacks in four games.

The Lions will be running four-wide receiver sets with regularity on Sunday and that means a lack of max protection and a chance of one on one for Carter and/or Daniels.

If our DL doesn't get it done this weekend they aren't going to get it done, period. This will be their best opportunity to increase the sack total this year and apply pressure to the QB. Let's hope they get it done.

You know KingGibbs, I was thinking this exact thing last night. I think this is where we will know if we have a d-line or not. For a few reasons:

We will have to play a lot Nickel and Dime packages (or some variation with 3 safties) leaving less chances for blitzes. It will be hard to blitz with 4 really good threats at WR. That means our d-line is the key to this game. If they get pressure, our secondary will have it's chances to make plays and shut down a high potent offense.

But if our d-line gets none, then our secondary will be in for a long day. Johnson, Williams, Furrey, and McDonald all can have a big day.

They better come pumped and ready to roll!

Guys, we'll be fine. Sean Taylor playing centerfield is going to elimate their deep threats. If we keep everything in front of us, with no home runs, we can win this game. Kitna is sure to screw up. I forsee three sacks at least and one INT. GW will get it done.

Is Smoot healthy????

Key is Offense IMO.

Would it really erase any doubts if they get sacks against the lions? They're giving up 5 a game. They're expected to get some in this game.

I mean, I could seduce a whore but it doesn't mean I'm Casanova.

Teams are getting to Kitna and the Lions are giving up sacks but they're still putting up points and winning games.

Maybe I'm not giving our D enough credit but this match up makes me very nervouse especially after watching Smoot get picked apart by Chambers and had it not been for a few drops in the first half, Plax would have had an even bigger day.

I think a strong pass rush will help our chances, but as mentioned in another post, time of possession is the key to this game.

It can't hurt to see the line get some pressure but they'll still be doubts, which are still legitimate IMO. The Patriots game could get real ugly and quick too.

Per John Kitna:

On what he expects out of the Redskins defense:
"You never really know. I have played against Gregg Williams (Assistant Head Coach- Defense) for a lot of years, back in the old AFC West when he was with Tennessee. I have seen his defenses a ton of times. I know he has just about every coverage you could throw at a team. For us, we have to stick with our rules. Every team plays us a little differently. You look at the film, try to get an idea. The fact of the matter is whatever the coverage they are running, they have the best collection of defensive talent in the league right now."

should have said "The fact of the matter is whatever the coverage they are running, they have the best collection of defensive talent in the league right now.....at every position that doesnt start with DE or DT."

I've watched quite a bit of The Lions this year. NFL Ticket + Fantasy = Many Lions Games. What I've seen out of their offense is the following.

1. Contrary to popular belief, their pass attempts are very rarely beyond 25 yards. They thrive on throwing the ball to WR's running patterns 5 - 20 yards downfield. Boat loads of intermediate routes.

2. They don't run a lot of screens, but the ones they do run are effective. All those intermediate routes have a softening effect on the LB's. So timely screen passes have been successful. Our D-Line will HAVE to get a read on the screens when they happen or they could be big gainers.

3. Pass rush has been irrelevant for opposing defenses. Kitna has been getting killed in every game, but it still doesn't stop him from throwing for big yards and at least one TD. I think it's a mistake to believe that sacking Kitna 6 - 9 times will have a game-changing type effect. Getting pounded doesn't seem to phase him. They're 3-1 and passing like crazy whether Kitna gets sacked or not. None of that is to say we shouldn't get a pass rush. I'm just saying that they have been putting up yards and points despite giving up a large number of sacks.

4. Mike Martz has no interest in running the football. If Kitna has less than 40 passes, I'd be shocked.

5. There's no reason to believe that Detroit will not put up at least 24 points. I don't care how well our Defense plays, they're going to score and they're going to score in bunches.

6. They could care less about clock management. I guess that goes with the territory of having a pass happy offense.

7. Martz never has and continues to not call the TE's number. The TE is an afterthought in his offense.

8. Roy Williams will get his catches and so will Calvin Johnson. Ya can't stop those guys. The key to stopping the offense from maintaining momentum is keeping Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald in check. Those 2 are the ones who run out of slots and give them the 5 - 15 yards catches that keep the offense going. Our #3 & #4 CB's as well as Landry will be the ones charged with this task.

In my opinion, after watching Detroit quite a bit, Item #8 is the key to beating Detroit's Offense. It may sound ridiculous, but I think it's huge. Detroit's big guns will get their opportunities. It's the 3rd & 4th options for Detroit that have been the difference for them in keeping an offensive flow and momentum in games. Roy Williams & Calvin Johnson will take their big bites out of you, but you can survive those bites. It's the little nibbles from Furrey & McDonald that will bleed you to death.

This will be a big game for our D-Line on many levels, but our secondary is the one that has the biggest test on Sunday.

I think that GW will put a blitz committee out this Sunday!!!

Thats what I'm hoping for. But if we can't get pressure from front 4, someone is going to be open. I love sending the pressure on the QB, but knowing GW.......he'll blitz for the 1st half and then just play soft zone in the second half so we can the Lions a chance to beat us home:laugh:

Carter better have a good day. He's our pass run specialist. Daniels has always been more of the run stopper, so if he even gets pressure, I'll be impressed.

I think Rocky or Washington might get a sack as well.

Great assesment of the Lions, truly a great breakdown of what we need to do to stop them. Basically, I think we can stop this team because we don't have a soft secondary and they will definitely get their share of work against these receivers. I think sometimes we could even run a 3-4 instead of a 4-3 defense if they are nothing but a pass happy team, but we can never let up because they could change their strategy during the game to catch us off guard with running the ball a lot more than passing.

I think Rocky is going to be huge in this game. I see him recording a 2 sacks and interception off a tipped pass.

The 3-4 might not be a bad idea........put Blades in there as the other ILB. They won't be expecting that.
The only problem is that rookies historically have problems with their coverage responsibilities.
I see a close game......again. I hope that we run the ball effectively enough to limit the possessions for the Lions offense.

3-4 is not a bad idea. It could be effective in changing our looks and causing some confusion with protections and reads. It would certainly be something Detroit won't expect becasue GW doesn't employ a 3-4 at all. There in lies the problem, though. How good would we be running it??

In the end, our Nickel Package will be the unit that gets the most work and the one that will have to step up.

The key is to get pressure in the red zone and hold them to FG's instead of TD's. Our offense HAS to be effective and we'll basically have to control the ball and put up 28 points or more. If we don't do either one, we'll likely be in BIG trouble.

I totally agree, red zone defense MUST force field goal attempts. I also think our defense MUST bring consistent pressure on 3rd and longs to force Kitna into making short throws and not force our secondary to stay in coverage for an extended period.

The most beautiful sight other than our offense playing lights out will be Kitna throwing into the dirt and a couple into our hands on 3rd downs all day.

How on earth does a team have a winning record if they give up 5 sacks a game?

We should start a poll on the defensive player who knocks Kitna out of the game. My money's on Marcus Washington.
