NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Steve Smith wouldn't be denied.

Smith fought for yards through two tacklers to turn a short catch into a crucial first down, and John Kasay made a 52-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Carolina Panthers to a 16-13 victory over the winless New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Panthers players mobbed Kasay at midfield, along the edge of the Saints' fleur-de-lis emblem that is quickly turning from a symbol of civic pride to one of futility.

The Saints (0-4) were supposed to be a Super Bowl contender, but now their chances of even competing for a playoff spot are extremely slim. Only the 1992 San Diego Chargers have fought back from an 0-4 start to do that since the NFL went to a 12-team playoff system in 1990.

Carolina (3-2), by contrast, redeemed itself after a week of dissension following a lopsided home loss to Tampa Bay.

The only game I picked wrong in my pick 'em league so far this week. Being in Carolina I saw a good portion of this game. The Saints should of blown the Panthers out. But the offense as a whole kept choking in the red zone. Thanks New Orleans.

nope, I don't know how Bush played today, but I think he is vastly overrated.

They sucked for many, many years. Couple that fact with all that community has been through...it's a strange team to wish ill upon. But whatever makes you happy I guess.

I don't like seeing the Saints fail because of that city or the fans, I like seeing them fail because the Saints and Reggis Bush are in about 20 season long marketing campaigns that makes it even more hilarious and brutal.

Having lived there for 15 years-their big problem is their FO, not their coaches. Their FO listens to mediots like John Clayton and Mel Kiper, they don't have decently minded scouts like NE does.(every year, they almost always get FAs that DON'T fit their system)
