I went to Midnight Madness even though the festivities ended before 11pm.

Even though I graduated in the Spring, I still feel like I never left campus when I was at MM. The men and women's team looked good when they were announced. The crowd went nuts for the seniors Folarin Campbell, Will Thomas, and Jordan Carter and of course Coach L. I give props to the freshmen who out slammed the seniors. Either way, I look forward to the new season.
I hope the Patriots have a good one...would be fantastic if they made it to the F4 again.;)

Warhead, you may be right. We actually play defense though

Neither team can hit the 3 though :(

Vlad's a beast.

Will Thomas is a MONSTER: 16 pts. and 17 boards

Closer than I would've liked, but a win's a win :)

Other CAA teams all also won :)

I like our band, and the new Platoon shirts

For once, I can actually root for the Patriots, GMU that is! To me, Will Thomas did alright in the season opener. Grant it, it's only the first game. I agree...he did get lots of rebounds. Vlad dude, is a big guy and he's only a freshmen. Carter did well last night. Overall, it was an awesome game! Fol. Campbell and Will Thomas are the remaining FF4 guys from the 06 season that's on the team now.

G-M-U-what...GMU....Go Patriots!

According to JetSkins's excellent blog, GMU actually has a size advantage over South Carolina. They seem to be an underrated team that almost beat NC State. Campbell, Vaughan, and Thomas will really have to bring it tonight.

If we win, you guys think we might get ranked? At the very least, I see us on the cusp of getting into the top 25.

ACW

If we win, you guys think we might get ranked? At the very least, I see us on the cusp of getting into the top 25.All depends on how the other teams ahead of us do. Villanova and K-State need to win; Davidson got ranked just by keeping it close vs. UNC. So, might we? Will we? :whoknows:

5. How about Malik Rose’s miserable night on Thursday, where this proud professional lost to the Celtics by 45 and a proud alumn heard his Drexel Dragons lost 85-38 to George Mason. Truth be told, I wouldn’t mind a George Mason-Knicks game. It’s always great when the good mid-majors get together.

That sounds like a plan. I know it's the same ppl (myself incl.) that responds in this thread. Now that football season is just about over, I can give my undivided attention to the GMU Patriots in hope to going to the NCAA tourney.

I know it may be short notice for Wednesday's game, but perhaps some of the GMU ES fans can meet for the game? If not Wednesday, then the next GMU home game.

I usually sit near the band in the student section. All I know is that students have to enter in the North Entrance of the Patriot Center. Since the game is not on tv tomorrow night, most likely I will be there even though I rarely go out during the work week. Otherwise I try to go to as many home games as I can especially if it's on the weekends. For away games, I watch them on tv at home.

Someone break down our chances at an at-large bid for me, because GMU education didn't cover RPIs, etc. It'll be real tough to beat VCU in the CAAs down in Richmond (basically a home game for them), so someone please tell me we have a legit shot at an at-large!!??

Will Thomas set the school record for consecutive games started, his 94th straight start. He also passed Jai Lewis for sixth-place on the career rebounding list. He finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, his CAA-leading 12th double-double of the year.. Folarin Campbell had a tremendous all-around game finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. John Vaughan, who had scored in double figures in 15 straight games before going scoreless his last time out, rediscovered his stroke, scoring 18 points. Dre Smith added 18 points, four rebounds and three assists as four players were in double figures for the 12th time this year.

"Should have" goes out the window in the conference tourney. VCU "should have" crushed W&M too, but they lost to them. W&M is not a bad team, and they were on a roll. To win the CAA Championship Game by 9 (would have been 12, but W&M hit a garbage 3 at the end of regulation when we had already stopped playing) is terrific. VCU, UNCW and ODU would trade places with us in a second.

You have to remember that Mason had an up-and-down year, so getting winning the CAA Championship is a great accomplishment. What it shows yet again is that THIS is Mason's time of year. We were LOUSY last year, yet we still made the CAA Finals. We heat up in March. Are we as good as we were two years ago? No. But is it foolish to write us off given how we typically play this time of year? Absolutely.

Now, your comment that this team isn't good enough to go as far as the '06 team went is kind of unfair. How many teams ARE good enough to the Final Four? That doesn't take away from their accomplishment this year. I do know that no one will want to play us in the first round. That's for sure.

It's better this way.

2007 wasn't as great a season for us because I think there was crazy pressure to make another run because people were actually watching us. Back to business at the moment. I think we'll make it to at least round 2, that would be awesome! :)

You're not exactly going out on a limb. Mason will be somewhere around a 13 seed, and we'll be playing (roughly) a 3 seed. So to say that a 13 seed isn't likely to beat a 3 seed, well, duh.

This Mason team is not as good as the team we had two years ago, for sure. But we ARE a very good team. We beat Michael Beasley and Kansas State this season on a neutral court by 10 points. And the fact is, we consistently play our best basketball in March.

I wouldn't be shocked if we won a game, or even did more damage than that. But to expect that to happen would be foolish.

But to say you don't expect us to go far is really pointless. Nobody "expects" a 13-14 seed to go far. But I can tell you that nobody will want to play us. That's for damn sure.

Hey not hating on the JMU football team, but seriously, try making a comparison that is valid. GMU basketball vs JMU basketball? Hard to even call that a rivalry, yall suck so bad. 66 west, 81 south! That the long road home for your basketball team every year after Mason is done beating the hell out of you. Maybe this year Dre Smith will beat his record he set against you last year. 10 for 10 from 3-point land was nice, but maybe he'll get 20 for 20 this year. Not that it matters though, he could be 0 for 20 and you guys would still lose. BTW, you seen our recruiting class this year? Those guys are special. 2 years from now we will be invincible in the CAA. Picked to finish 4th this year, but you just watch, we'll give VCU and co a run for their money. When was the last time JMU even made noise in CAA basketball??? Not to mention NCAA.

We have the overall.... But anyway, why we've been so ****ty...

We had an awesome coach in Lefty Driesell when I was little and beat ODU in an amazing comeback in 1994 in the CAA Championship and then we pretty much had Florida beat in the first rond of the NCAA when the refs absolutely ****ed us on a kickball(ask anyone who saw it or maybe you can even find a video somewhere, I don't know... But it was terrible)... Lefty wasn't very popular with the higher ups at JMU though, especially this one douchebag(I don't remember his name, he's gone now) and he was fired the next year after losing to ODU in the CAA Championship. We then hired Sherman Dillard who was absolutely ****ing terrible and they took WAY too long to fire. He pretty much drove the team into the ground and they just refused to fire him until finally "he resigned" a few years ago and we hired Dean Keener. I like Keener and think he should have had another year or two, but after last year he "resigned" too. Now we have Matt Brady who, apparently, wants a completely different system from what we have now, freshman are getting ****loads of playing time over top players from last year like Abdulai Jalloh, Haiden Rattner, and Pierre Curtis... So expect at least a few more years of kicking our asses, but hopefully we'll be back before too long, in the meantime we'll keep partying it up at The Noog every few years while you guys sit at home missing your blob of snot and wishing you had a football team.

Oh and you're dreaming if you think you'll be "invincible in the CAA" ever. Anthony Grant is a ****ing beast and as long as he stays VCU will probably be the best, definitely better than Gayson. Sucks because VCU fans are big time *******s, but it's true and at least their fans knew they existed before 2006... You guys still get outnumbered by UNCW and Hofstra, and of course VCU and ODU at the tournament and don't outnumber us by much even after so many people jumped on the Final Four bandwagon. Mason fans are 90% Final Four bandwagoners and they still suck and don't show up in Richmond until at least the semifinals. Have you ever been to the tournament? William and Mary fans are a bunch of nerds and don't go, you seen how many people they bring? Yea, before 2006 that was Mason too.

Even though they're probably my two most hated though, it was fun wearing my JMU football jersey around the Richmond Coliseum last year during the Gayson/William & Larry championship... GMU doesn't have football and Waste Management football is our *****.

How about I report this post to the mods? Then we'll see who's the smart guy.

Seriously, explain it. When someone says to me, "you wish you had a Duke dog," what the hell am I supposed to say in response to that? "Oh, you got me! Yes, I DO wish I had a Duke dog!" That has got to be the dumbest slogan I've ever heard.

I'm skeert... Seriously, are you that much of a loser? Beside that, I'm sure they either have seen it or will see it and if they have a problem with it I'm sure I'll hear about it with or without you... Please don't report it though, life as I know it will come to an end.

Seriously, how are you stupid enough that you need it explained to you? You must have went to Mason. J-M-U wish you had a Duke Dog... I don't get how you're not getting this, do you not know who Duke Dog is or what?

You're not worth the trouble of reporting. But I'll say this, since I've been around here for over 6 years, and you've been here for maybe nine months...there is a certain etiquette that's used and enforced around here, and calling people retarded is not included in that. You're a kid, so I'm sure it's hard for you to grasp this right now, but if one day you have a child who happens to be retarded, I think you'll be a little more careful about using that word as an insult. I used to use that word too when I was your age. I don't anymore.

I must have 'went' to Mason? No, I must have GONE to Mason (at least that's how Mason grads speak).

Look, I know that JMU's nickname is the Dukes. I know the mascot is a ****ing dog. I'm not confused by that. I'm talking about the SLOGAN. "You wish you had a Duke dog." The slogan is meaningless. That's my point.

If I said to you, "You wish you had a Washington Redskin," how much sense would that make? "You wish you had a Duke dog?" Seriously, what could be dumber than that?

That's about the most retarded comparison I've ever heard. I guess what you meant to say was "You wish you had a Chief Zee". It would be a stupid cheer since there's no JM or anything, and since Duke Dog basically won(but got ****ed out of) best mascot through the Capital One Bowl thing and Chief Zee lost his, but it makes sense.

The went/gone thing is retarded too. That's more having to do with region and accent than grammar. I know it's not proper grammar, but I'm not writing a ****ing school paper. Just like I know "we were" is proper grammar but in normal conversation I say "we was".

Just pointing out the irony of calling someone retarded, making fun of his college, and then using backwoods grammar. It's actually pretty hilarious.

And the slogan is still the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Why would I want a ****ing Duke dog?

Anyway, about the "retarded" thing. Look. I joined this board when you were barely out of elementary school. I've been around here a while. And the people who tend to last around here are the people who take their cues from the veteran members, and the people who show respect to their fellow members. I'm actually trying to help you, whether you realize it or not.

If your plan is to use Extremeskins as a place to talk **** and act like a tough guy, then good luck to you. People like that don't usually last around here.

I'm wondering why this guy is trolling in the Mason thread anyway.

To address a couple of your points, you seriously just brought up your basketball team's 1994 championship. I mean come on, 14 years ago? Anyway, you will get to see our recruiting class firsthand when we kick the **** out of you guys yet again twice this year. Up here, down there, doesn't matter. Just make sure you see one of those games.

Also, I wouldn't call the Patriot Platoon a bunch of bandwagoners. We have some of the most loyal fans in the CAA, and yes we do travel well. I didn't join the Platoon last year as a freshman, but I did go see the game @JMU where we won by 30 something and Smith made 10 for 10 3-pointer (NCAA record, *****) and went to the CAA tournament last year. Didn't catch JMU's game though, but did hear you guys lost pretty bad.

The fact is that your basketball team is a joke and ours is a contender nearly every year. I know you can't help but feel a bit of jealousy, but it's ok you'll get over it. BTW, at 17 years old (if that is your age) why do you even care this much? You aren't even old enough to be in college in most cases.

I've already said why I'm in here.

It's not like I just came in here and said "Mason sucks! JMU won the CAA Championship in 1994!" It was part of a reply to that other guy and was relevant. And don't worry, I'll be at both. I'm a true fan, I don't have to have a team make the Final Four to start going to their games.

So had you ever been to a CAA Tournament or a Mason road game before they went to the Final Four? If not, how the hell can you say they're not bandwagoners and traveled well and they're so loyal? If so, stop lying to yourself. Mason didn't bring **** to the tournament before that, even if they were the top seed. We'd outnumber them at the tournament and we took more fans to Mason than they brought to JMU. Trust me, I've been going to JMU games since before I was a year old and I've been to every CAA Tournament since I was three.

Definitely no jealousy here. You guys are the Duke of the CAA, everyone hates you... And don't be like Duke fans and say everyone hates you cause you're good. Everyone hated you before you were good(and Duke sucks by the way). If we wanted to hate someone because they're good we'd hate VCU. And your fans are gay and obnoxious just like Duke fans, they just aren't as loyal. As soon as Mason starts sucking for a little while people will quit going to the games so much and most won't come back when they get good again. Oh and I don't even want to go to college, if I do end up needing to though it'll be Blue Ridge Community College, what's that have to do with anything? Just because you never heard of George Mason until it was the only school that would accept you doesn't mean that's how it is with JMU. Have fun with that Mason grad unemployment rate here in a few years. Now just sit back and watch us bring home another football national championship... Maybe you'll make the playoffs next year. Oh wait, nevermind.

Come on guys - no need to turn this into a JMU bashing thread. I pulled for Mason in the tournament and I can't tell you how much I envy your basketball program. I'm really hoping this new coach takes the program in the right direction - although I'll always be bitter about just how badly they sucked during my time there.

I also agree with the poster hating on the "You wish you had a Duke Dog" cheer. I have no idea where that would have come from. I guess some people down in Harrisonburg aren't that creative.

I also find it hilarious that the "JMU troll" is 17 years old, and based on his posts I'd say it's extremely unlikely that he'd even gain admission to JMU. (or GMU)

Because I've been around the boards for awhile and have already established myself, so it's quite possible I have a little more leeway. Also, Mason plays at W&M tomorrow (well today I guess, Wednesday). I don't think it's on TV, but we're going for a 6-0 start in the CAA, which would be our best start ever. It probably will be a good game. My bet is Mason wins by six or less. We are much better at home than we are on the road, so I'm not surprised W&M gave us a game down in Williamsburg tonight.

But we've won something like 21 of our last 22 at home, so it'll be a tough challenge for Madison.

Anyway, Mason's now 6-0 in the conference...hopefully they keep it rolling Saturday!

Anyway, Mason's now 6-0 in the conference...hopefully they keep it rolling Saturday!

Yeah that UNCW homecoming game last year was the ONLY game the whole season that Mason lost at home, if I'm remembering correctly.

I'd say a good game but Mason pulls away down the stretch to win by about 12 or so.

Eh, I'd say the payback was the game against them this year. That mess in the tourney last year hardly counts as a basketball game. I know, a win is a win, but that was the sloppiest piece of basketball I've ever seen Mason play (both teams for that matter), save the Notre Dame NCAA game.

Anyway, 6-0 is the way to go!

Hell yeah! Best CAA start ever for Mason. Pearson was a beast tonight, but as usual a lot of guys chipped in for the win.

We have a big game coming against Northeastern, what, next week right? I have to check the schedule.

Sorry JMU folks, your team looked much better than last year, but still no match.

10 in a row vs. JMU! I was at the Pat Dome for the game.

Man, if you had told me back when I was a Mason student that we'd ever win 10 straight against Madison, I wouldn't have believed it. Now it's almost expected. Good times for GMU.

Go Mason!!

JOhn Vaughn has been hurt @ the game against Northeastern. He was taken away on a stretcher as I saw on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sport Network) tv. In the replay, it looked like he got elbowed in the head. Fell on the floor, but got up to shoot the foul free throw and almost fell onto the floor again. I hope he is ok. JV is one of Mason's best players.

Yeah we're looking out for any news. Hopefully just a concussion, and not a bad one at that. I let you guys know when I hear something.

Well, GMU lost against Northeastern by one point. This is Mason's first loss against a CAA team, but I think the guys lost focus worrying about John Vaughn's health (see above post). JV got hurt with 3 minutes or so left of the 2nd half.

Hopefully JV's OK :(
Rest him Saturday at VCU if you have to.

My guess is he's definitely a no go for Saturday. You don't normally play someone that soon after a serious concussion. Sucks, because although we have a lot of guys that can step up, he's a huge part of our team. He had some huge clutch shots tonight to keep us in the game. Too bad we couldn't get the win for him.

The latest from Andy Katz of ESPN:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3850749

BOSTON -- George Mason senior guard John Vaughan dropped to the Matthews Arena court Wednesday night, minutes after he took an inadvertent elbow to the face at the other end of the court from Northeastern's Eugene Spates.

George Mason sports information director Richard Coco said Vaughan suffered a concussion, but that his CT scan was clear. He was released from Beth Israel Hospital late Wednesday night and was scheduled to return to George Mason Thursday evening. The rest of the team was heading back in the morning.

Vaughan will be re-evaluated by the team physician upon his return to school.

Yeah I saw that this morning. Now that we know he's ok I don't feel bad saying that I hope he's able to get back on the court soon. We will definitely need him. It would be nice to have him on Sat, but I doubt that will happen so soon after the concussion. For him to be ko-ed like that it had to be pretty bad. Sucks bc he's probably our best defender, and we could use him against VCU and Maynor.
