I noticed a thread that some people are missing PGH type breakdown. I decided to provide a little one of my own. Hope you guys enjoy this. I'm trying to finish within 2 hours... (not sure if that will happen).
Fergasun's PostGameHeroes-ish Breakdown vs. Detroit
Offense
1st drive
Start out with a gimme pass to ARE for 8 yards. 2-step drop by Campbell, very quick, no time for pressure. ARE simply has to beat his man to the inside.
2nd & 2 - Shaun Rodgers destroys Rabach, Casey gets in the way enough for Portis to get past him for 2 yards. Tackle made by MLB, Fabini not quick enough to get to the 2nd level. It looked like Cory Redding was holding Fabini preventing him to get into 2nd level.
1st & 10 - Their LDT destroys Wade at point of attack. Portis has no where to go, and a blitzing DB takes him down from the backside. I hope this play is removed from the playbook as OL looked a bit lost. Detroit was running a zone blitz.
Redding and Rogers are actually above average interior lineman. So far they've both blown up rushing plays.
2nd & 12 - Draw to Portis behind offensive left side of line. Their RDE jumped JC's snap count and ran out of the play. Samuels was helping to seal off Redding and got tied before he could move onto the 2nd level. Lenon was free to make the tackle. ARE had a nice block on the CB to the outside.
3rd & 10 - Redskins in the shotgun! Screen pass is called. Lions rush 4, easily handled. Kendall, Rabach and Fabini are all free blockers. Key block is Fabini on Lenon. Looked like their DBs were slow to react... or Caldwell and ARE sold pass very well.
1 & 10 - Campbell makes pre-snap adjustment. WR screen to Thrash (WTF!?). Play-fake freezes LDE. DB is 7 yards off LOS. Sellers, Wade and Fabini are blocking. Wade and Fabini throw key blocks on LBs, DB runs in other direction from Sellers. Samuels also sticks with the backside LB.
2 & 3 - Betts behind the right side of the line. Lions had 8 in the box for this play (1 LB and 1 SS at LOS for snap). Fabini, Wade, Cooley all get a very nice push, and somehow Betts is able to avoid the unaccounted for SS. Lions LDE got blown off the ball by Cooley.
1 & 10 - Play action pass that fakes out the camera. Lions rush 4, RDE got around Samuels, and LDE stunted up the middle... but I'd call it mild pressure. Dump-off to Betts for 5, but if there was time Trash and ARE both look like they had found holes in the zone.
2 & 4 - Betts sweep left with Kendall and Fabini pulling in front. Cooley takes out the RDE. Kendall takes out the CB and Fabini one of the LBs. Wade also got to the 2nd level quick and took out a LB.
1 & 10 - Middle draw to Betts. Big Shaun Rogers clogging up Rabach and Kendall. Sellers went through LT-hole, but Betts cut it into the middle. Looked like there was more to be got by following Sellers... there were no blockers where Betts ran.
2 & 7 - Inside draw up middle to Betts. Rogers clogging up middle, Rabach again. At least they've been able to neutralize him at the snap, but he's not going to give a lot of ground.
3 & 5 - Shotgun. Rabach miss-snaps the ball and Portis has to fall on it.
2nd Drive
1 & 10 - Campbell takes a 4-step and hits ARE on a quick out to the left. Lions rushed 4 with no pressure.
2 & 1 - I-formation with Sellers at HB, and Portis in FB position. Portis motioned to the right. Once again they ran right at Rogers. Rabach got pushed back a little, but Sellers powered through Rogers tackle. Fabini & Kendall both were on LBs, and Wade sealed off the LDE.
1 & 10 - Play action, Lions rushing 5 (zone blitz). Mild pressure, with Sellers doing a nice job on blitzing LB, and Portis giving Campbell enough time against blitzing SS against the interior. Campbell overthrew Thrash near the 10 yard line on single coverage. Thrash was well covered.
2 & 10 - 3-step drop, fake WR screen to left, TE screen to right. Rogers had heavy pressure on this one (got inside of Fabini, who released), but Campbell avoided and hit Cooley. SS had man coverage on Cooley and just waited there. Fabini wasn't able to block the SS because he was looking back to see if Campbell had thrown the ball. Rabach was illegally downfield on the play as well.
3 & 9 - Shotgun again (Surprised they brought it back out). 4 man rush gets pressure. Lions ran a bit of a nifty stunt play (not sure if it is legal). RDE and RDT engaged Samuels and Kendall. RDT knocked Samuel off his block and RDE went under. This flushed Campbell and he tripped over Rabach.
3rd Drive
1 & 10 - Portis run behind the left side. Redding gets good penetration occupying Rabach and Kendall. Rogers is able to disrupt Sellers, and their LBs are there to clean it up. Samuels had sealed off the RDE, but Redding killed this play.
2 & 9 - Campbell 5-step drop. Lions rush 4. Off quickly to ARE underneath who ran a circle pattern. He dances around for a few YAC but gets tackled by the DE.
3 & 2 - Redskins show a jumbo formation, PA left into bootleg right. Sellers is a 2nd TE on the right (interior) blocking the LDE. He releases the LDE and catches the pass behind LOS, and runs upfield 7 yards. No one is going to tackle him on the first hit.
1 & 10 - Play action 7 step drop. All 3 LBs bit on the fake and ARE is open in the zone. RDT had mild pressure on the play (LDT torpedo'd both Rabach and Fabini thinking run).
Campbell has a very nice pace in and out of the huddle going. They haven't been caught with no time on the 40 second clock.
1 & 10 - Portis sweep left (ugly result). RDE knocks back Samuels at point of attack, Kendall slow to the 2nd level (no helmet on the MLB), and Lions SLB #97 gets through Cooley and Sellers to stop Portis behind line of scrimmage. He made a good read.
2 & 13 - Pre-snap Caldwell is lined up wrong side and Campbell snaps the ball while he's trying to motion across. 5 step drop, no pressure. ARE finds soft spot in zone and Campbell hits him.
3 & 6 - Shotgun. 4 man rush, no pressure. Cooley runs an out from his slot and Campbell hits him. Tight coverage by Boss Bailey #97, good throw.
1 & 10 - Handoff to Betts on right slide, blown up by Ernie Sims #50. Rogers stands up Rabach. Wade and Fabini get a good push on Redding. Yoder doesn't get a great block on the LDE, and Sims runs past Sellers.
2 & 12 - 4-step drop, 4 man rush w/no pressure. ARE is in the right slot and he runs a great pattern. Starts inside and reverses direction to the outside, hit in stride for a first down.
1 & 10 - PA pass, 7-step drop. Quick out to Thrash (incomplete). Mild pressure as LDE was rushing against Wade.
2 & 10 - Draw to Portis for the FIRST DOWN. Rogers penetrated past with Kendall, and past the play. Wade sealed off the LDE. Samuels blocked RDE. Fabini, Rabach and Sellers (from TE position) all had good 2nd level blocks on LBs.
1 & 10 - Sweeping left w/Portis. Pucillo was TE on Samuels side. RDE gets penetration through Samuels, but Chris is able to hold him off enough. Pucillo wipes out CB, and Sellers blocks an LB. Pucillo is able to get in way of another LB.
Portis shows good balance/speed as even with penetration he's able to get to the outside.
2 & 5 - PA to Betts, 7-step drop, Lions rush 4 (no rush). Dump-off to Betts.
3 & 3 - Rushing 4 with no pressure. Cooley, underneath, TD. He just runs 7 yards and turns around.
I'm glad other teams cannot stop it.
4th Drive
1 & 10 - Awesome. Portis is deep at QB, with Sellers in kind've an I-formation. Sweep left. Cooley, Samuels, Kendall, Sellers in front. Fabini got to the 2nd level quick and made a good block. Kendall and Sellers clear a nice path with Portis riding #45.
Since Detroit is strongest at DT, and their DEs seem week it's easy to see why you would run that type of play.
1 & 10 - Shutgun. 4 man rush, little pressure. Sellers lined up at TE (to the left), catches the pass and trucks Detroit safety. Campbell threw it right over MLB head. MLB broke on ball like he expected Sellers to stop in front... maybe that's why Cooley ran all those routes that stopped earlier.
1 & 10 - Betts run right. Cooley was on left side of formation, and I think they'd been running to his side most of the game. Kendall pulled, Sellers was leading and took out the LDE. Wade and Kendall got nice blocks at POA to open up the hole. Betts carried the MLB for 4 yards after contact.
2 & 2 - Lions applied pressure at center. Betts run up the middle. Lines were pretty much at a standstill and one of the Detroit safties ran in for the tackle.
3 & 1 - QB snaek called, center exchange was muffed, I don't think he would've had it.
4 & 2 - 2-step drop, same play we opened up with to ARE, quick slant ARE runs to the 1-yard line.
When was the last time we saw a play call like that?
1 & G - Pucillo + Yoder TEs on the right side of the formation, Cooley on the left. We ran behind Samuels/Kendall/Cooley to upback Sellers. Cooley/Samuels held well enough that Sellers just had to run over Ernie Sims for the endzone.
5th Drive
1 & 10 - Draw up the middle, 2 minute offense... yawwwwn....
2 & 7 - Quick handoff up the middle... yawwwwn...
3 & 2 - Another WILDCAT FORMATION! Portis takes the snap, sweep right. Fabini should've tried to engage Rogers, but he backed off and was in the way.
6th Drive
1 & 10 -
Defense
1st Drive
1st & 10 - Kitna takes a 4 step drop and immediate hits Roy Williams in front of Springs. Play developed before McIntosh could get underneath the route.
1st & 10 - Draw to Tatum Bell on to offensive right side. Daniels rushes upfield out of the play. Griffin is blocked. Their center makes it upfield and muddles up LBF. Springs makes the tackle, with Taylor and LBF around.
2nd & 6 - Inside draw to Bell. Daniels playing LDT throws off the RG and makes the tackle. If Bell cut left, there were more yards to be had. Griffin was blocked and Carter upfield.
3rd & 8 - Shotgun w/ 4 WRs. Kitna takes a 3 step drop. Rushing 4. Griffin pushed the LG back, and Washington upfield. Kitna pulls it down quickly and runs into the C, Griffin gets the sack.
2nd Drive
1 & 10 - Kitna 3-step w/weak fake. Carter bull-rush the LT and flushes Kitna. Montgomery able to counter-flush (w/Griffin) and force Kitna the other way into Daniels who had gotten around a TE. Kitna with a blatent intentional grounding. For some reason Hochuli says he was flushed out of the tackle box, tape I'm watching says... no.
2 & 10 - Kitna 5-step drop. Redskins rush 4. Daniels and Carter both had pressure. Kitna gets it to Furrey in soft spot of zone. Looks like a TE got McIntosh to follow him underneath.
Lions strategy is to double Griffin with tackle and guard... this left either DE pass-rushing on a TE the previous 2 plays.
1 & 10 - Lions in shotgun. Washington from his hand spins away from RT Foster and drags Kitna down by facemask.
1 & 10 - Kitna PA, 7-step drop. Once again a TE is "blocking" Carter (tackle help is slow). Carter pressure Kitna's throw. Furrey was in the left slot and ended up near right sideline (deep). He has a step on Taylor, but the ball is over-thrown.
2 & 10 - Kitna 3-step drop, WR screen to Charles Johnson. Rogers forces the play inside, Andre Carter hustles from his position, and Pray-low gets to Johnson faster than the OL get in front.
3 & 7 - Kitna 3-step drop, Redskins rushing 4. Griffin and D. Evans have some nice interior pressure disrupt passing lane. Kitna gets it out to TE underneath, but Rogers staying in the zone breaks up the pass with his helmet. Evans nearly intercepts the deflection. I didn't like how Rogers lowers his head on this play... although most NFL players hit like this (dangerously).
3rd Drive
1 & 10 - Quick inside handoff to T. Bell. Center and LG (trap block) do a good job of sealing Griffin and Daniels. RG and RT get to 2nd level and put hates on LBF and Rocky. Pray-low makes a nice tackle.
2 & 1 - Run behind RT. Washington rushes upfield. Their RT mauls Daniels (playing LDT). C and RG both make it to 2nd level. Bell tries to cut back, but Rocky makes the tackle.
1 & 10 - Shotgun. Kitna draw, but he never gets it to Bell. Ball bounces around and somehow Detroit got the ball, despite Carter/Washington/Rocky all falling onto it.
2 & 10 - Shotgun. 4 man rush. Daniels from LDT was able to get a push and seemed like he either deflected the pass or caused Kitna to throw high.
3 & 10 - 5 step drop, fake-screen left, TE screen right. C and RG are in front of runner. Rocky stands up the blocker which causes the runner to hesitate. Taylor and Smoot are there to make play.
4th Drive
1 & 10 - Kitna shotgun, screen pass. RG and Center are out in front. Smoot makes a great committment to getting the ballplayer down. I thought the replay call was correct.
2 & 8 - Kitna shotgun, 4 man rush. Right slot WR runs a square-in in front of zone but Kitna throws it low and he can't pick it out of the air.
3 & 8 - Kitna shotgun, 4 man rush, no pressure. Kitna tries to hit Furrey in a soft spot of the zone, but Landry is there to break it up.
5th Drive
1 & 10 - Kitna shotgun. Not a ton of pressure, but he doesn't pull the trigger, and he fumbles... yaawwwnn....
6th Drive
1 & 10 - Kevin Jones run over LG. C and LG tied up Montgomery, LT blocked Carter. Pray-low went to inside (don't know why, LBF/Rocky were there).
2 & 5 - Kevin Jones over RT. RT pushed Carter away. RG blocked Montgomery. Center and LG made it to 2nd level and put hats on LBF and Godfrey.
1 & 10 - Kevin Jones over C. LG blocked Griffin. C blocked Montgomery. Lead blocker hit Godfrey in the hole. LBF missed the tackle... Landry better be careful about taunting. Rocky and Griffn backed off blocks and made the tackle.
2 & 3 - Kitna dropped the ball. Could've been a tuck rule... but it was ruled a fumble.
3 & 5 - Kitna shotgun. Mild pressure by Daniels from LDT position. Ball sailed on Kitna and Taylor was there.
Special Teams
Kickoff Return - Rock fields the ball near the goal-line. Wedge does a decent job, except Lions player gets tangled with Sellers right where Rock was cutting. Campbell got beat by another guy as well. Start around OWN 23, not great field position.
Kickoff Coverage
2nd Quarter - Suisham Touchback
2nd Quarter - Two 2 yard line, looks like there was no containment on the return right side. Carlos does a good job to force him to the sidelines @ 41 yard line. Not good.
3rd Quarter - Suisham Touchback
Punt Coverage
1st Quarter - Frost is able to pooch it... fair caught at the 10. #29 Leigh Torrence would've had a chance to down it as a gunner.
1st Quarter - Frost pooch to the 17 yard line where it is fair caught. Thrash and Torrence both around the PR.
2rd Quarter - Frost kicks out of trouble, 50 yard kick w/fair catch
Punt Return
1st Quarter - ARE drops the ball after catching it. I don't know why the 'Skins had 2 men on both gunners, as it looked like the Lions would've contained this one pretty well.
1st Quarter - Lions punt into the end zone. ARE looks like he might catch it around the 4 yard line, but gets out of the way. Can't tell if he was trying to fake out defense or really thought about catching it.
2nd Quarter - ARE from the 15. He has some space. Rather than running straight ahead for a decent gain he dances around for a gain of 2. Makes us all slap our foreheads sometimes...
2nd Quarter - Thrash, fair catch at the 18.
3rd Quater - Thrash from the 12 made a decent return. He runs foward.
