View Full Version : Wasting another championship defense

Folks, the Gregg Williams D is back and we all know that
This is a 12-4, 14-2 defense, just like in 2004, and in 2005
Besides one play today, the D did its job. Got enough pressure on Favre, stopped that meager run game, and Sean Taylor is playing like the defensive player of the year
Again though, this offense just can't help but get in its own way. And it'll be another potential championship season wasted because the O makes critical errors at critical times, just like during the 2005 season where homefield advantage was in our grasp
This game just like the KC game in 2005. A game where we were in control, but turnovers, and dropped balls killed us

Tip your hat to ST as he at least got 2 INTs and gave our team a chance!!! :D
Defense gets the KUDOS for this tragedy of a game!!!
Offense and time management were a bust in the 2nd half!
What happen to the team, seemed like no one could catch or run
GreenBay is not that good, but luck @ Lambeau Field...

Ding!
KC '05: Game tied but we're moving in for the go-ahead, but Rock fumbles and it goes the other way for 6.
Today: We're ahead and have good position thanks to Rock, but Moss coughs it up.
We were 3-2 in '05, 3-2 now. Had an opponent coming in that we blew out to go to 4-2; this year, have an opponent we should beat at FedEx to go to 4-2. Then, we got pasted by NY; after AZ, we go to NE. I still think the Eagles game is going to be the key one of the season. I just hope we're not forced into a "5-in-a-row-or-we-don't-go" predicament again. Jason Campbell and the D deserve better.

Well thats the thing, and it probably cost us a Superbowl title in 2005
The team should have secured home field that season and been healthy for the playoffs. Instead at 5-6 the team had to go all out just to make the playoffs
Same scenario again this year. Team should be 5-0 competing for the top spot in a wide open NFC. Instead at 3-2, this team is just going to be competing for a 5 or 6 spot

Just don't ever call that end around play again...it hasn't worked all year.
That's the only thing I have to say.
Defense is solid.
I guess Buges needs to call a bailbondsman and get that practice squad guy out of jail.

It seems like the O has multiple personality disorder, and the one that showed up today really SUCKED.
But the NFL is tough, do we even have any O-Lineman left? Not trying to make excuses for the O, they definitely screwed the pooch here (Moss, Portis). But I did notice that Jason wasn't getting a whole lot of time in the pocket, nor were there any substantial running lanes.

Wasting? Sure it's getting wasted but how much do you expect when half your offensive line is injured? If there was no rain In my opinion Redskins beat the Packers 9 times out of ten even with the injurys

The Defense did it's job!
However, the OFFENSE was just plain offensive. They haven't done their jobs. If they did, we would have won against the Giants and the Packers and would be 5-0 instead of 3-2.
The play calling on offense, and time management were simply pathetic.

The offense is inconsistent. If that shocks you when we have a QB that has started 12 games, then you should probably go post in the Santana Moss Sucks thread too.

It's not just the QB...it's the entire offense.

We lost in green Bay. Guys, i thought we should've won this but god damn.
Our team is going to be 11-5. We lost to a hard time and we weren't used to bad weather.
Our defense played great has only gave up one play of 40+ yards or more.
HTTR! Im mad too, but we've got a team and the cowboys are going to lose!!

That would hold water if it were JC that was the one making the mistakes, but IMO he is one of the few bright spots of this offense.
Bottom line is that we have a HUGE problem at offensive line, coupled with the fact that some of our skill players are just plain lost at the moment.
As a fan, I couldn't be happier about JC's progress as an NFL QB.

If it was JC making mistakes I think you'd have a good point
However he was the best player on our offense today. He didn't throw any bad picks or take any bad sacks or fumble
His guys around him are simply not helping him out enough. He isn't a good enough QB to win without his guys doing what they should do.

Well, what makes me feel better about this game than NY is that this defense is going to be fun to watch this year. ST is going to be giving QB's fits playing what's obviously his natural position, free safety. It's not even fair how much ground he can cover back there. What is the franchise record for interceptions for a safety?
I think we'll ride a great defense to 8 or 9 wins, but that's it, folks.

I'm certainly not ready to panic like some other people apparently. We should've won the game but that was a great defense we were playing and by the end I think Bugel was gonna have to come in and play offensive line. Maybe Ray Brown will come back again, I just don't understand why our offense is consistently horrible in the 3rd quarter. Somebody has to figure out something on offense that works with some consistency.

how many more years does gibbs need for him to get this offense going? I hate seeing these types of games where the defense is so strong but the offense can't get going.

You know....it is pretty bad when a leading runner goes over to the defensive coach and attempts to make excuses for his way of playing...and the fumble he had. Great job defense, you played very hard to keep us in the game for all of the offensive mistakes. I hope the offensive players who were lacking make it up to the rest of the team next week.

Pretty much.
And BTW, for those scoring at home, we'd be about 0-5, maybe 1-4 so far without our top rated defense. And some of you clowns wanted to clean house with the defensive staff? Seriously, do us all a favor and set yourselves on fire. You know who you are.

Do you have access to some special mic where you could hear what Portis said to Williams? CP fumbled for sure. And when we lost to the Giants he was the one player telling people to blame him for the loss. Clinton Portis doesn't make excuses for his fumbles. If anything, he probably was trying to apologize to Williams for putting the defense in that position.

You would think all teams should play better in the 3d and 4th quarters of games. The outstanding teams usually do. Concerning the Redskins, however, it seems there offense shrinks during these times...especially when victory is within reach. The offense does worse than simply not execute...it usually self-destructs. It very seldom seizes the moment or rises to the occasion. Your guess is as good as mine as to why.
Regardless of why the offense tanks so badly (especially in the second half), a Super Bowl-caliber defense needs more help than it's getting if the Skins want to make it to the playoffs.

There is just something about the way we've played and executed on offense since Gibbs came back that's off, consistently, especially in the clutch. And PB, to mention the "only 12 starts" QB in this thread, in relation to this game, is idiotic. He played a damn good game, DAMN good, and didn't make any mistakes. His teammates let him down all over the place. The defense, with the help of the Packers, tried their hardest to lay the game in our laps over and over again. Campbell did the right things but how ****ing many times can a receiver drop a 3rd down conversion?
And there's the real problem with the offense since Gibbs got back. It isn't one guy, it isn't always the QB but rest assured, when it matters, SOMEONE on the offense will **** it up. Doesn't matter who, doesn't matter how, they all take turns making sure we can't be the team we can be and making sure we play against our own defense as much as the other teams. It's getting really old.

Protection wasn't a problem until the very end of the game. Repeated 3rd down drops are what lost this game, period. If just ONE of the 4 or 5 3rd down drops was caught, we probably win that game.

You actually think that? I think Gibbs should just let Saunders have full control and not even be included in the play calling at all.

Coaching was not the issue today. Again, how many ****ing 3rd down conversions can a team drop in one game? From my recollection, neither Gibbs nor Saunders dropped a pass today. In the Giants game, I agreed, we got too conservative in the second half until we were behind. Not so in this game, the players, specifically the pass catchers, simply didn't execute.

I think you are being a just tad bit hard here. Yes this is a great D but it is not the offenses fault that we have lost every starting linemen for sometime. We are getting decimated by injuries not more you can do but keep going hard.

While I havent read all the posts, I wouldnt call our D "championship" yet. Im still suspect on our CBs... Portis for Champ was a decent trade but I admit I miss him... If Spurrier didnt run out S.Davis, who knows...

In 20 quarters of football, this defense has allowed 5 touchdowns. That's an average of one touchdown per game. What would you describe as a "championship" defense?
The offenses that we have played can hardly be called garbage. Green Bay and Detroit were both the top ranked passing offenses before having played us. Philadelphia is the league's 8th ranked offense. The Giants are ranked 7th in points per game.
This defense is the real deal, it's just really unfortunate that the offense isn't.
