Which gaming system do you like better. I have a son who is having his 7th Birthday and I am buying him a system but wanted to get the opinions on what to get. Sony, XBOX or other.

I prefer the X-box. Microsoft is spearheding the on line gaming platform for counsole based systems. Theres nothing like playing that favorite game against thousands of other players. This of course can be achieved on the PC; however, yoe must have a system able to handle the graphics and a broadband connection is almost a must these days.

Ever play the rainbow six series? Well heres a free demo for you. It's the game "Raven Shield" due out in March. If you like first person S.W.A.T. type gaming, then you will love this. Free Demo game. This is their home page, the downloads are on it. (http://www.raven-shield.com/demo.php)

Tom Clancy is the man. I love all of his games. Rainbow Six, Socom, and Splinter Cell..I'm pretty sure he had a hand in all of those. PS2 has online play as well, but I haven't tried it. Playing online is the best thing to come out in a while. From sports games to shooting games, it's the greatest, well sounds like it..I really need to get it.

Thats right Arrington, you can't lose on this game. It's free and probably the best first person combat simulation on the market. Warning: Do not attempt to download this game if your machine is inferior. You must have at least a 16 meg video card. I would recommend no less then a 1 gig processor coupled with a DSL or cable connection. Theres just too much going on in the background for an inferior machine to handle. Ram is also a must. No less then 512 on sdram.

I love PS2---GTA 3, Vice City, Madden 2003, NCAA 2003, Tiger Woods golf, Kelly Slater surfing......

However the best game I have ever played is on my PC---STAR WARS--Jedi knight II--Jedi Outcast--

Coolest game since techmo bowl

I have had a problem with sony playstations since I have had them. When I had the original ps1 after about a year and a half the laser disc reader totally failed. It would not read a disc for its life. My ps2, which I got right when it came out, is starting to give me alot of errors and it actually makes a hard clicking sound when I first try to play a cd,movie, game or whatever. I hope my ps2 doesn't fail like my original ps1..That was alot of dough to drop on a gaming system and hopefully it will be a little more durable and lasting than the ps1.. Hopefully!..

Here's a few more positives for the PS2--

1. In addition to being able to play the vast library of cheap PS1 games, Sony is continually adding older PS2 games to it's greatest hits library-- $20 a piece!

2. It was a snap to throw the PS2 in a bag and hook up to our hotel TV when we went on vacation last summer. Games and DVD movies to keep kids occupied during down times.

3. With a 3rd party LCD screen/speaker combo (around $200) and a couple power adapters, you have a mobile DVD/game entertainment system for long car trips.

4. Sony is supposed to be coming out with a PS2 hard drive this summer or fall. No more memory cards needed and wide open possibilities for broadband multimedia and other applications that require large storage. Wonder if TIVO capabilities for a PS2 with a hard drive is in the near future...

If it's a doorstep you're looking for, I highly reccomend the Xbox.

Otherwise, go with the PS2.

Now to further the confusion. Xbox has the LCD screen add on too. Yep....One has to go no further than the local Wal-Mart or Toys R Us and for about 169 bucks pick up a 5.6 inch LCD screen which mounts on top of the Xbox rather nicely thank you. (Yep, built in speakers and such). Now..with the Xbox one has to get the remote control to play DVD's, but since the hard drive for the PS2 and it's broadband adaptor are both accessories, ( unlike with the XBox where they are built in), figure that more than evens things out. Guess PS2 is a smaller doorstep. :D Games aren't a problem unless they are specifically made for the respective consoles. However the greatest games library and a still large PS1 inventory can work in the PS2's favor. (though once one experiences the gameplay and pure graphics ability of Xbox..........hard to go back....and I own a PS1).

Interesting thing about PS2 is that one can pick up a Linux kit for it. Keyboard included. Has some interesting requirements though. http://www.us.playstation.com/hardware/more/SCPH-97047.asp

Whew.......sort of like consumer reports here now isn't it? :silly:

For a 7 yr old my recommendation would be to purchase him a Nintendo Gamecube.

The XBOX is king of the hill though in my opinion.

Anybody that buys Alienware or any of those "gaming systems" is a sucker. I have a 2.4 Pent 4, Intel Motherboard 845BG, 1024 DDR Ram, Radeon 9700 Pro, PlexWriter 12/10/32A WD 20 Gig ATA Ultra 7200, Hercules Game Theater 6.1, Logitech 500 watt 5.1 THX surround sound and a Sony Trinitron Multiscan G520 moniter. I payed just over 2 for it. You buy a system at Alien with all this and see what it cost. All the extra cost is so you can say you have a case with Alienware on it.

Go with the XBOX man. XBOX live rocks and the best part of it is that it's broadband only, no slow 56k connections to slow things down. Live comes with 12 months free when you buy it. There will be an annual fee but they have not decided what that will be.

gamecube is more aimed towords kids to young teens

PS2 is more aimed towords teens to young adults.

XBox is aimed towords adults.

althought XBox is has great games and graphics, it has a pretty messed up controller. you have to have giant hands and two thumbs per hand to play it.

PS2 has great games and a great controller

gamecube has some great games, and also has a great controller

if you want to play great games, and actually be able to play it, go with PS2

if you want something more affordable, go with gamecube

the hype about gamecube being more for kids and having more appropiate games for it is misleading at best and flat out wrong at worst.

based upon the info above (cube=kids), that's what i bought. ps2 actually has MORE kid oriented games, just not with mario, et al. if i had it to do all over again, the ps2 would be my choice. it's good for kids and for adults. the game cube is limited by the number of games and its overall power. it still works, and i still waste a lot of time on it though.

My 5yr old nephew has no trouble with any of the three game systems...
I do agree that the xbox has more titles catering to adults... my dad wants an xbox now because of the up coming war titles..
He is more into realism rather than arcade style games, the xbox is a little better at that because of the hard drive and ability to download upgrades and such on xbox live.

I own A GameCube, Reasons bought

1. I'm old and fear change, I need my familiar franchises I grew up with.

2. I hate the Xbox and Microsoft, Halo would be an average shooter on PC, and the thing is frikin huge

3. Resident Evil, love the series, and the graphics are amazing.

4. I owned a PS2 and the only game I enjoyed was Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec

5. Grand Theft Auto is better on PC anyway. easier to control and better graphics.

6. Portability, easier to carry around my "Japanese Lunchbox" than the unwieldy 18 pound Xbox.

6. Affordable, I needed to save cash.

7. Reliable, Never had a Nintendo product break down on me, my friends Xbox always performs random errors and his 1st one malfunctioned.

thats about it.

I own a PS 2.

The graphics, storage and online play aren't as good as the XBOX, but ...

--I avoid PC's, Windows, and Microsoft where possible. Owned a PC for 5 years, now I own a Mac running OS X and couldn't be happier.

--Sony produces reliable, quality products, Microsoft rarely does.

--I like the PS 2 controllers the best

--I wanted to play Grand Theft w/o having to buy a PC.

Tecmo Super Bowl RULED!!!!

definately a classic.

he drops back in a 3 step, no 5 step, no 7 step... hell, a thirty yard drop back. the throw is a perfect spiral to a wide open sanders, whos been standing in the back of the endzone for about 10 seconds. touchdown redskins.

*cut to scene that shows the cheerleaders' @sses*

brings a tear to my eye just thinking about the good ol days. actually, it does bring a tear to my eyes, cuz i was playing that when the skins had a good team:laugh: .

You realize that there are tons of software emulators out there that enable you to play Tecmo Super Bowl on your PC...

I've got a ton of versions of it on my machine, including one of Tecmo Super Bowl III (for the SNES) with updated rosters for last year. It's a fun alternative to the sophistication of Madden, etc. Suddenly, Heath Shuler is pretty good.

This site has a bunch of Tecmo stuff for download: http://www.famssu.com/tecmo/

I have to agree and disagree....
Sony rules... I have a Sony bigscreen tv and Computer... but I don't have a problem with Microsoft.. Some of their games are really really cool... Age of Empires, Combat Flight Simulator... my dad would die without microsoft games...
I have the PS2 and Xbox... I just think the xbox is able to do more things...
but other than that.. if you are happy with the PS2, that's all that matters...

Sony blows. My ps2 broke down. My ps2 broke down. Disc read error everytime. Luckily sony said they would waive the fix fee but I had to pay for the shipping there and i'm sure they'll come up with something else i have to pay for. My ps1 did that twice and now my p2..man oh man..If you do a google search for disc read error you'll see what i'm talking about.

I'd take him to the store, see which games draw his interest and then make the decision based on that. Of course all of them will have new games that will be coming out.

Any of them, Gamecube, Xbox, or PS/2 are fine in terms of hardware and games. He'll be happy to get any of them.

I voted for other because the cost of the gamecube is lower and it is more compact than the other boxes.
