View Full Version : Cardinals' blocking our punt

This doesn't make sense to me. When Arizona blocked our punt, it went 10 yards forward, and our guy picked it up and crossed the 1st down marker. Since Arizona touched it (the one who blocked it), doesn't that make it a LIVE BALL? Thus our player had a first down when he picked it up and went past the marker. It would be ridiculous if it wasn't; say they block it, it bounces to the side/backwards, don't we have just as much right to pick it up as they do?

The only thing I can think of is that he was down by contact when he recovered the ball, since he went to the ground to pick it up. But I could've sworn that he was untouched until after getting up.

I wanted to know this too. Is a blocked punt not live and no matter where it's collected it's the receivers?

Yeah, I don't understand this at all. I don't understand half of the calls on the field today.

**** the refs.

Where were you in my other thread? Where everyone was heaping love on the the Refs and claiming the 'skins got so many favorable calls?

It has to pass the line of scrimage first, i think.

I knew the Redskins were idiots for trading away our prized personal punt protector, Adam Archuleta.

That's what I heard too.

The punting team cannot advance the blocked punt unless it touches another defender after the block. Otherwise it's spotted where the offense gets possession.

If the ball had landed past the first down line to gain then it would have been Skins ball- first down.

That's my understanding of the rule and Yes it's a bogus stupid rule....

I think he was ruled down before the line of scrimmage.

If nobody on the returning team touches it after it is blocked, then it isn't a live ball. But, if they do touch it, then it is a live ball.

Does the ball have to land past the line or do we jsut have to gain posession past the line?

That doesn't seem right. That's like saying that the kicking team isn't allowed to pick up the ball if it's knocked to the side. So the block doesn't count as a touch by the return team? That's pretty absurd if that's actually the rule.

even though the cardinals player touched it when he blocked it, it is still a dead ball if a redskins player touches it first. the ball has to be touched by a cardinals player passed the line of scrimmage for it to be a live ball for the redskins.

First it has to touch a player on the kicking team. Then the recieving team can recover it. In this case nobody on the Cards touched he ball after it was blocked. It looked like Frost recovered it and dove forward. Like the other guy said it cant be advanced anyway.
The best example I can think of is the Dolphins/ Cowboys game on Thanksgiving, maybe 94'. Its the one were Leon Lett touched the ball after it was blocked, giving the Phins another FG shot.

Correct, similar situation happened in the Panthers Skins game last year, i think. But We blocked a punt, and it was first touched by a panther, then ST fumbled it. Since the ball was touched by the panther first, the ball is downed where touched.
