View Full Version : A SuperBowl of Sorts?

In my mind I can't help but to address the importance of this game for the second coming of Joe Gibbs. Imagine for a minute a Joe Gibbs victory over the "unbeatable" New England Patriots on Sunday.
Also imagine the Redskins not winning another SuperBowl before Gibbs heads into retirement for the second time.
I think a victory over the Patriots on Sunday will squash any discussion of "the game has passed Gibbs by" once and for all - forever - even without another SuperBowl win.
I see this game as a chance for Gibbs to enhance his leagacy without reaching his goal of bringing a Lombardi back to Washington one more time.
Any thoughts here?

The game HAS NOT passed Gibbs by. If it has, then he wouldn't have coached this team to the playoffs from 5-6 to 10-6 two years ago.
I do think the Redskins have to make a statement in this game against New England.

I think this game could be a statement. Our offense has to put it together though.

I'm still cheering for the Skins. But I'm not thinking of a victory this time around.

sorry for the short reply.... I am working after all. :)
My personal opinion is that Gibbs has an arsenal of weapons and is failing to utilize them properly. I think that the play calling has been horrible. However, I honestly don't know if that is Gibbs, Saunders etc.
I do agree that this game does sort of make or break his second career (which is why I am going to the game). But its obvious from his comments over the past two weeks that he is frustrated and I think that is because he is failing to keep up with the game. I think we can win this game...but I think Gibbs needs to losen the leash a little.

In my opinion if there is any area that Gibbs is not as strong as he was as first first go around is his ability to manage his players/personnel. What I mean is I don't think he is getting the most out of his players like he did back in the day. He was known for making champions out of underdogs, and now I think you're basically right. He has a high level of talent but for some reason they are not being put into situations where their strengths shine through and are being fully utilized on a consistent basis. He has done an amazing job of keeping the team together - this cannot be denied. I have not seen the level of passion this team exhibits on a weekly basis from any Redskins team in my day.

Its a Super Bowl of sorts to me.
Look, I live up here in New England and while I root for the Pats when they are not playing the Redskins I am soooo sick of hearing how great the Pats are and bye comparison how terrible "my" Redskins are.
I get it from all angles--friends, neighbors, fellow workers, the customers I deal with, my favorite radio and talk-show programs, even my own wife! Pats fans are so damn smug, they like the smell of their own farts! (South Park ref.) Seriously, as much as I cherish victories over the hated Cowpies, a victory over the "unstoppable" Patriots this Sunday (a game that I am attending) would be such sweet revenge for all the crap I have to put up with. Oh man, just thinking about a victory makes me giddy.

Being disciples of Air Coreyell, Gibbs and Saunders should open the offense and gamble in this game. Show the New England Patriots and the NFL what this offense can really do. Gibbs once had three WRs catch for 1,000 yards each during a season in his own offense. I understand defenses weren't playing cover 2 and cover 3 back then, but I do think Gibbs and Saunders should go back to their roots and just attack the defense like Air Coreyell would.

i was thinking the same thing this morning -
the stage is set for one last masterful gibbs gameplan. if we can win this game, gibbs' legend will grow exponentially regardless of the rest of the season and regardless of some of his shortcomings thus far.

This would be a great time to make a statement not sure if they will win but I do believe they will play their best game of the season. The Skins tend to play better in games that no one gives them a chance. They really need all phases working all 4 quarters the big concern is the collapse in the second half. They can't do it this week or they will get buried for sure.

Can't agree more, there have been too many times this season that there has been a 2nd Half collapse.

Just keep in mind, if we can't beat the Pats, or come close, than how can we expect to win the super bowl?

You would think they would have learned now.. Gibbs really need to talk to them because this is not a team you can have an collapse against at all they are relentless. Call me silly but I really do believe they have a shot . Patriots defense is good but there are some cracks and saw it against the Dolphins and saw it against the Cowboys.

Straight out of the mouth of HBO's Inside the NFL own Chris Collingsworthless
The Patriots still have a game with the Redskins, but people are already starting to look forward to the Nov. 4 game against the Colts. It is probably one of the most highly anticipated regular-season games since the Cowboys and 49ers squared off in the 1990s.
That is what I am banking on they will totally overlook us.

They really better be careful not to overlook us, if they think they are just going to pass all over us like they have with other teams I am telling you they are making a big misteak. We are a ball control team, and all it is going to take is a few three and outs on their part to really get things cooking for us as a team. The offense will be sooo pumped to see the Defense controlling them, the offensive line will then start to pummel their small but speedy d line and backers. I really think New England has to run the ball against us to win. I just hope we can stop the run with our d line.

I actually think the defense will hold their own my concern is the offense. I think they will be alright but will they do enough?

Come on guys? I'm disapointed in all of you. Are we that bad that we have forgotten the greatness that is a Super Bowl. This is week 8! Statement game? Maybe. Any sort of Super bowl? Hell ****ing no.

The assumption was the skins not getting that super bowl and them winning this game. If Gibbs does retire at the end of his contract time is surely running out. I am talking about his second tenure. The second legacy he will leave. What will it be?

So my question is what will be the legacy of the second Gibbs tenure w/o that SuperBowl?

Why does this matter? What does this have to do with the question? What does this have to do with Joe Gibbs' second tenure? Explain?
Are you saying that you are embarassed to be a Skins fan?

How sweet would it be if we still have Randy Thomas and John Jansen? Man I bet we would be 6-0 and the Pats would be shakin in their boots....

If you can't beat these AFC powerhouse teams, you won't win the Super Bowl unless you get really lucky and somehow none of them win the AFC championship.

I fully expect us to win against the Patriots. The more news I have read the more I am confident we will win. No one on the team is talking to the media about the Pats. Other little subtle things are going on that make me feel like we will win, nothing I can't put my finger on but I just keep getting that feeling. You can call me a fool but its going to happen.

if anyone listened/watched riggins show today, i have to agree with him 100% (along agree with many of you on this board)
gibbs should let al handle offensive playcalling, set JC all kinds of loose and take shots downfield more than usual. with our D line unable to run-block as well as it can pass protect, we got nothing to lose because even if we lose, it's not like we were ever considered to win this game. if theres any game to take gambles and risks it's this game and this game alone, because we got nothing to lose and everything to gain.
