Guys if this is posted delete it, but on yahoo...while talking about Seymour's return Brady had a little comment about Gibbs.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5228/;_ylt=AvHJfhXmOc5KTYugTgGq5dsdsLYF), who has thrown 27 touchdown passes already, said Gibbs was "blowing smoke."
"I promise you that he's not telling his team that," Brady said. "That sounds like something that coach Belichick would say, so he's trying to butter us up. You know, it doesn't work for us. We know what we're getting ourselves into."
Maybe Taylor may make him eat those words "butter us up" I'm offended,

What Gibbs said before the the Brady Quote.
Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, whose team plays at New England on Sunday, said Seymour's possible return would make the 7-0 Patriots even more dangerous.
"They have (talent) all the way across the board," Gibbs said. "You hate to see them get somebody back that's a high-quality guy, too, to add to it. Not a pretty picture."
Earlier this week, Gibbs predicted that the Redskins would "probably be the biggest underdog in the history of sports" against the Patriots, whom he called a "juggernaut."
Nah. Not popping off imho. Just calling it as he sees it.

I don't think Gibbs is trying to butter anyone up to catch them off guard, I think he's practicing good diplomacy. Of course he's saying something different behind closed doors. That's a given. I don't hold this quote against Brady at all.

Umm... I think you guys missed the point of what he was saying.
Brady was saying that Gibbs was attempting to get the egos of Pats players soaring, with words like "juggernaut" and "biggest underdog in sports history", which then opens them (the Pats) up to mistakes. Brady says he knows that Gibbs has all the confidence in the world in the Redskins, and that this psychological warfare tactic won't work on the Pats because Captain Sweatshirt constantly bashes them to keep their egos from growing too big.
Bottom line, Brady feels that they certainly aren't overlooking the Redskins, unlike the media and most of the country.

I understand that...but when he says "butter us up" That sounds like Brady is saying "oh he's being nice so we won't drop 50 points on them" Where I come from using the term "butter up" you are trying to get people to go easy on you are be nice to you. That what I saw...but I understand everyone's point as well....

I dont think this quite qualifies as popping off. Gibbs did try to "butter them up" but they know where our defense stands and the hard hitters we posses. Hell I hope some of them fall for the "buttering" and look to the colts game.

Tom Brady is an idiot. If he has any common sense at all, he should know that Joe Gibbs is being humble. That's how Gibbs coaches and that's how he's always beem/

What else did Brady or anyone else expect Gibbs to say? I dont feel that the Pats truely know what the y are getting themselves into though. Let Taylor hit Moss one time and we shall see who gets buttered up.

exactly! and that's why it's insulting. Brady is saying that the Skins suck. If Belichick "butters up" a team to the offense, the offense is obviously aware of it and disregard the comment. This is why Brady is disregarding Gibbs' comments. So he IS looking past us. Let him! That's what we're gonna capitalize on.

Brady just gets Gibbs. Apparently better than some on this board who thinks Gibbs talking up the Pats at press conferences is going to demoralize the Redskins into oblivion.
Silencer6091
October-24th-2007, 08:14 PM
I know Gibbs really regrets using that "biggest underdog" phrase...the media has really harped on it...I saw that conference and he just said it casually in a jokingly manner...now reporters are spinning it like he was being serious...and ontop of Joe's usual "compliment the opponents" approach in interviews, it probably was enough to paint a picture as if he was buttering them up...just sounds like a whole lot of hype to me...

Grrrrrrrr for some reason that quote by Brady REALLY ticks me off. He sounds very pretentious, sounding like he thinks he's got us figured out and that we don't scare him. I hope Landry and Taylor put him in a body bag! I want his blood!

WTF. Coach Gibbs didn't learn how to talk up opponents from Belichick, Belichick got that from Gibbs...

I had to read the whole quote in context, and it appears he's saying that Gibbs is "blowing smoke" in saying publicly what underdogs the Skins are, while in private to the team he's probably not saying the same things. So yes, it could be considered a "smokescreen" to say one thing publicly (humbly) and be pumping up your own team privately.
I don't think it's poppin off at all.

Gibbs wasn't too far off on his comment. We are a 16 point underdog. So, Brady, what do you think about Gibbs now. Pats coach would have had to tap the point setters phone lines to have made as accurate a prediction as that.

Gibbs doesnt cheat. He doesnt run up the score on games already won. He doesnt treat people like trash. Oh yeah, he didnt have a "Golden Boy" to win all his championships, he won his with different family. (Yes, I use the word family cause Gibbs treats his players with respect and trust.)

"Blowing smoke" is Brady's way of saying that's just Gibbs being Gibbs. Does anyone really believe he thinks we are the biggest underdog in the history of sports? He's trying to play the underdog role just like he always does. Gibbs is famous for making our opponets look much tougher than they really are to motivate his team to play the perfect game.
Gibbs is as talented at playing the media game as Belichick, they just do it differently. Bill plays the cold shoulder, disinformation game. Joe plays the humble, "we're glad to be 4-2, every game will be hard fought, we just need to play our guts out" kinda role. I like it. Hopefully we all know the personality of our coach here, and love him for it.
Gibbs will beat a team by 50 and say, "They're a great football team, played us tough, they deserve a lot of credit, their coaches coached hard and their players fought hard." That's his style. Just like Belichick's style is being an A-hole.

Or, what if the Patriots had taken QB Todd Husak with pick #199, and we had then taken Tom Brady with pick #202 (instead of Husak)?

OK orginal poster here....yeah I'll be a man and take my lumps....I don't usually get beat up for the Threads I start. Like I said I origianlly thought and still do (partly) believe that making a comment like "buttering us up" was negative. It read (to me) like he was saying Gibbs was being nice so they would drop 50 on us...at least the smirk type attitude. I could be wrong, I could be reading more into this, whatever....I'm human everything is subject to interpretation. BTW I do understand everyone else's point of it being "coach talk" etc.
I guess part of the whole thing is being a bit jumpy about Sunday...why? Well if we pull this OFF it would do wonders for us....I personally think (like most of you) that we have a better shot than most think. I'd like to see us take advantage of this shot for once and play like we are capable. So if the thread is unneccessry and if I'm going out of context, lock it up with my deepest apologizes.....But still Bring on the Patriots and Hail to the Redskins!!!!

Bottom line, Brady feels that they certainly aren't overlooking the Redskins, unlike the media and most of the country.
yeah, people seem to miss this. All Brady was saying was that Gibbs' comment was for the benefit of the Patriots...it was a mental thing, and their own coach does the same thing.

"Poppin OFF at the mouth?"
Of course Gibbs is buttering up the Patriots. Its what all good coaches do. One of our main advantages in this game is if the Pats overlook us, and look towards the undefeated bowl in two weeks against Indy.
Plus, when has Gibbs EVER said ANYTHING about an opponent other than "they are really good." Its kind of a Gibbs trademark. If you took his pre-game press conferences seriously, you'd think he expected to go 0-16 every year.
The Pats are on a mission and the skins must play a flawless game to win
