View Full Version : What do we do about LG?

I know it's early to be thinking about this, but I've noticed throughout the season that our line just isn't the same without a solid guard. Now say what you will about Derric Dockery, but he gelled nicely with our line and knew how to get the job done. I firmly believe that in addition to the injuries to Jansen and Thomas, our scrambling at LG is one of the reasons why our line hasn't put up the same numbers it did last year.

Now with all due respect to Pete Kendell, he's pretty up there in terms of years and he came in pretty late, making it hard for him to gell with our line. He's also prone to injury as we saw after the Packers game. That's why I'm weary of using him again next year, even if he has one more year left on his contract. We need someone younger and tougher at LG to replace Dockery. So what are our options?

Does anybody know who is on the last year of their contract for FA? Or what about the draft? We have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick availible to us. Who will be in the draft this year that's quality enough for us to take a chance on? It would be great if there was a Joe Thomas type OL coming into the first round, but I think we'll have more pressing needs for the first round like CB or DE. But what are your thoughts? What do you think our FO should do to fill this gaping hole that's been holding us back?

What?

Kendall has been very solid this year and has 2 or 3 seasons left in him. it's all the shuffling at RG that has been causing most of the problems. Remember that our running game was strongest running right behind randy thomas last year.

Regardless, he is now our oldest lineman and I think we should pick up a few Linemen in the middle rounds next year to groom a replacement. It would be cheap and who knows... we could find a gem.

Pete Kendall has been doing an awesome job playing LG for us this season. The problem is RG, the position that would normally be played by Randy Thomas (one of the leagues best run blockers), who is scheduled to return from Triceps surgery around week 12-14. With Thomas, Jansen and Rabach out of our O-line, we are below average at best. With Rabach back we are average, and when we get Thomas back we will return with a top ten O-line, the problem is that we have to make do, until Thomas is back.

PLEASE TELL ME YOU ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT PETE KENDALL.

Please tell me you are not talking about LG being the problem on our line.

Not gellin'?

Brought in for last preseason game what?

Dont kid yourself. Ray Brown played line until he was 43. Kendall is an OX like Ray Brown and will be pushing people around in DC for years.

Of all problems with the line, I just cant believe you single out Pete Kendalls play.

We've contacted our farm team the Jets, and we've asked them to develop somebody new for us to pick up in a couple years.

Yes pete kendall is getting up in years and yes there are lineman out there that are better than him but you cannot go out and get the best player at every position on the field. kendall is more than capable of holding his own at left gaurd and he is exactly the type of player that this team needs more of to fill its holes cheeply inbetween its highly paid stars.

Are you hitting the pipe, Kendall has been are best O-lineman so far this year him and Samuels are Gelling pretty good. Kendall has the smarts and is a very crafty Vet.

Thank god for Pete Kendall. He's been a smart, steadying influence on an offensive line in turmoil to his right.

Single dumbest line of the month, from the OP:
"What do you think our FO should do to fill this gaping hole that's been holding us back?"

If you want to argue that the 'Skins need to draft OL help for the future, fine. But to call out Pete Kendall as the source of O-line woes THIS SEASON is ridiculous.

Yeah, but we filtered out anyone called Hall or Morton.

Kendall has been good, but we do need young depth at guard. Kendall and Thomas are both getting up there in age and it's painfully obvious that our depth at guard is lacking.

We have a good young prospect in Heyer at tackle, we need someone like that at guard out of next year's draft.

Read Offensive Line 123 and then come back and ask a legitimate questions, like what can we do to improve the RG and RT run blocking.

Kendall has played far better than what Dockery ever played in a skins uniform. This is one of the reasons Samuel's is having his best season.

Dude. What games have you been watching all season. Campbell's back side has been protected very well. The whole O-line is hurt with the exception of Samuals (knock on wood) so I don't see how you can single Kendall out as being prone to injury. The right side of the line is the area of concern. Backups to our backups are playing right now. Hell we've got d-linemen playing o-line on the right side now. I'm happy Campbell wasn't hit even more than he was last week.

I'm actually pissed at Todd Wade for missing that block that resulted in a sack last week though. He was standing around looking stupid as the DE ran untouched for the sack. There's no room for those types of errors this week regardless of who is in the game.

I hope the return of Heyer and Rabach will help.

We are fine at LG for now but over the next couple of years we have to get younger on the line from right to left. Heyer looks like he may be able to play right tackle and actually fills in descent at guard but that is only one young guy.
I'd like the Skins to address the line during the next couple of drafts and get a playmaker WR. DEs are a dime a dozen and unless Julius Peppers is coming out of college, do not waste a first round pick on a DE. CB...CB...are you kidding me. I just want to win a game. CB is not a position of first round need.

I will go along with the crowd and say Kendall is not the problem. Depth to the right side is our new problem.
Guess you wanted to pay $2 Billion to Derrick "False STart" Dockery.

I'll be the first to say it in this thread. "Not all thoughts should be threads."

I love it when someone gets an idea in between downloading jpeg porn movies of Jenna Jamison.

As stated before, finding o-lineman in the draft, back-ups & starters, are essential to a good player personnel dept. These guys are all throughout the middle rounds. Look at Heyer, an UFA.

We need to value those mid-round picks a little more in the future because w/ the best o-line coach in the game we can turn those kids into reliable starters and backups.

Take it for what it's worth but I work for one of Kendall's in-laws here in Boston (he's from Weymouth and I think everyone from the Boston area is related somehow...lol) and at 34 years old he's had some pretty serious knee issues in the past.

I think he'll be okay for another year or so but not much beyond that. We need to continue to bring in young o-lineman as viable back-ups for all the positions on that line. We have a great line but even for those guys time is of the essence.

The OP isn't that far off:2cents:

Wow, I didn't mean for this to get ugly. I'm serious here. I want to know what our options are with this situation and what people think. Now I said in the first thread that I'm not knocking Pete Kendell. I think he's done a great job. But he's hardly a long-term solution and that's my concern. One of the thing that made the Hogs so great was their continuity. We haven't had that since then. So what should we do? I think we need to go to the draft or FO, but I don't know who's coming out so it remains to be seen.
