I discovered this website over the weekend looking for stuff related to old # 37 - Pat Fischer. There was a good thread about him in April of 2005. I just wanted to say that even though I'm from the Detroit area, Fischer was my childhood hero. I first learned about him in Life Magazine when there was a whole multi-page feature article about him & his buddy Gary Collins (Brown's receiver) around 1965 or 6 - I'd love to still have that issue.

Anyway, to me those were the golden years of pro football - because I was at the prime age to enjoy it. Just think of all the fantastic players back in this era: Fischer, Chris Hanburger, Butkas, Bart Starr, Johnny U, Gayle Sayers, Jim Brown, Tommy Nobis, Rosey Grier, Fran "The Man" Tarkenton, Ray Nietchke, Mel Farr (had to get one Lion in there, & there wern't many), Charlie Sanders (another great Lion), Hollywood Joe, John Mackey, Lou "The Toe" Groza, George Blanda, Sonny Jurgenson, The Fearsome Foursome, Purple People Eaters, man there were SO many great players for a kid to look up to! None of the drugs & steroids crap back then like there is today.

Some day I'd like to personally shake Pat's hand & get his autograph. THAT would be the ultimate! I lived to watch the 'Skins games when #37 prowled the left side! I still have all his cards & other select cards of the era - the "golden" era!

He played cornerback for Skins and cardinals back in 60,s 70's tough as nails and he was small. I saw him at one of the draft day parties at fedex

Here is a cool site to pick up his throwback from his days with the Skins:

Great guy too. Met him several times. Ron McDole is usually with him and the stories those guys tell are classic

You'll never see another CB play with the attitude he had. The man was only 5ft 9 or 10 inches tall and shut down receivers that were 6ft 5in or taller. Back then there wasn't the one bump within 5 yds. rule. He had to fight a receiver all down field until the play was over. That was real football, not the crap they play today.

This is Awesome! I just met Pat Fischer this past weekend at a book signing. Ron McDole was with him and they had us laughing for the hour we were there. I was telling Pat that my Dad used to tell me stories about how Pat would climb up Harold Carmichael and smack the ball out of his hands. He just roared laughing.

The best quote was from Pat when some older guys came in and asked "Where are these Redskins players at?" and Pat stood up and said "We're it" then pointed at Ron and said "He's the big, tall, dumb one and I'm the short, skinny, hard hitting one!" That made my whole day! I got to shake Pat's hand and he signed a card and my book for me. After that I went looking for information on Pat and found the same write-up you are speaking of, it was incredible! Every skins fan should check it out.

what was funny was he was assigned to cover Harold Carmicheal of the Eagles, who was 6'8" - they developed a friendly respect for each other.

Is Pat still into the Real Estate business? I'm at a BIG disadvantage being so far away from your area. Man, I'd drive in to meet him at a PR event somewhere - I know my brother (from Harrisburg, PA.) would join me. Anybody know if he has something coming up?

Anyone remember the time Wilbur Montgomery (Eagles) came running around the end on a sweep and Pat meet him before the line of scrimmage and just picked him up and threw him backwards?......it was awsome.

Its always struck me that things like the 5 yard rule were put in to open up the downfield passing game yet the yards per completion plummeted with the institution of that rule.

I read where Pat Fischer paid dearly for all those hard hits later on in his career. That, according to what I read, ended his playing career prematurely..

I wish we had a Pat Fischer now on our team.

I met Pat Fischer a couple of weeks ago at a fund raiser.. My son is 11, but he knows his Redskins history and was excited to meet him, and he brought his autograph football for Fischer to sign.
He was wearing his Santana Moss jersey, and when Fischer saw him, he grabbed him by the shirt and jacked him up. He put on a big scowl and said "I HATE RECEIVERS!!!" right in my boy's face.
My son's eyes were popped out of his head, and Pat let him go with a big laugh.
Then he quizzed my son a bit on who he was an why he might hate receivers, and my boy answered his questions well.. Pat was a great guy, had a big smile and a terrific attitude. He could have just signed the ball and moved on, but he had a good time playing with my boy for a minute and in that short time made a memory for my son that will stay with him forever.

then I got up close and said that no matter what, no one will convince me Roy Green caught that pass. Pat knew exactly what I was talking about, his face darkened, and I think I could see the old CB in there,, he said real quiet, "No. No he did not". Very serious about that.

A great guy!

Doubt he would even make a modern team.

If many of today's players could be half the football player that Pat Fischer was, life would suck to be a receiver!

That's because it wasn't Roy Green. It was Mel Gray (and he didn't catch it, either). :D

I saw him play many times and met him a few times. He was by far the best hitter pound for pound there ever was. He was only 5'7 170, and would fight you all day. He used to clothesline receivers and actually poke their eyes if he could get away with it. If he played today, he would be fined every game. Great Redskin, the kind we need now

Hanburger was the one known for clotheslines...was his specialty! :silly:
