G.I. Joe Gets a Makeover for Movie
Concerned about the current negative image of the American military in many countries, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro, the toy manufacturer, have decided that in their forthcoming film featuring comic-book patriot G.I. Joe, the character will become part of a multinational force, the London Daily Telegraph reported today (Tuesday). Even the character's name has become an acronym for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, the newspaper said. Word of the makeover is likely to anger U.S. conservatives, the Telegraph noted. The film is due to open in 2009.
What Paramount and Hasbro are doing to an American icon is awful. This is an honored U.S. Marine who stands for American patriotism and strength. Changing this character to be an international patsy is ridiculous.

That is not GI Joe.....not the one most of us grew up with (vs. Cobra Commander, with guys like Snake-Eyes, Roadblock etc.......) not the original either (the soldiers more based in reality).
Not sure what this movie will be........maybe UN Joe?

I take that you're still playing with your dolls WB? Just look on the bright side. You can now play dress up with your GI Joe.

I just can't believe it has gotten to the point where American companies are embarrassed by the US Military.
Argue with Bush's policies all day long; hell, I will probably join you. This just seems like a slap in the face to those who raised their right hand and volunteered. Paramount and Hasboro pretty much said the US Military is an embarrassment and a hinderance to them making money so they will remake an American military figure into an international one.

I agree with you here, but nothing is sacred anymore.

Sweet, maybe Joe will get kickbacks from the Oil for Food program. Hopefully, they'll just glaze over his time in Africa.

This is a surprise? The US and it's military is NOT loved internationally at the moment and this is a company we're talking about... they are in it for the money. This is what companies do. They'd sell babies to sharks if they were allowed and they could generate a profit.

Yeah, I wish they were more realistic with stuff like "Serpentor" who was a combination of histories greatest Villains!
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1e/Serpentor2.jpg
Alexander the Great, the young leader of ancient Macedonia who sought to conquer the known world but died a premature death when he tried to rebuild Babylon.
Amon-Toth, one of the greatest generals in ancient Egypt. (cartoons only)
Attila the Hun, the greatest barbarian leader during the fall of the Roman Empire.
Cyrus the Great, Persian military conqueror and emperor of the Persian Empire. (comics)
Erik the Red, a Viking lord who once ruled the seas north of Europe. Generally credited with colonising Greenland.
Erik the Batterer, though similar in description to Erik the Red, he is apparently a different Viking lord. One of his most treasured possessions was his battle-axe, Skullsplitter.
Genghis Khan, the greatest known leader of the Mongols, who once conquered much of the continent of Asia. He also conquered more of the world than any leader before or since.
Grigori Rasputin, a self-proclaimed holy man, popularly blamed for the destruction of the last royal family of Russia. (cartoons)
Hannibal, the leader of ancient Carthage, who nearly forced the young Roman Empire to the brink of ruin. (comics)
Henry V of England, a brilliant general who conquered much of France.
Ivan IV of Russia, also known as Ivan the Terrible, a very efficient monarch known for cruelty to his foes. (cartoons)
Alexander Hamilton, first secretary of the treasury. (comics only)
Julius Caesar, a rising Roman politician who sought to unite the Roman Empire more closely but was assassinated in the senate. How his ashes still had his DNA remains to be seen unless there were still bones left.
Moctezuma II, the last monarch of the Aztec Empire before the arrival of the Spanish, at the end of his reign, the Aztec Empire was already at its peak thanks to him. (cartoons)
Napoleon Bonaparte, one of the greatest military leaders in history and Emperor of the French.
Ripcord, a G.I. Joe infiltration agent. Dr. Mindbender used Ripcord's brain patterns to give Serpentor limited knowledge about the G.I. Joe organization. (comics only)
Sgt. Slaughter, one of the best field leaders of the G.I. Joe organization, whose DNA was almost (but not actually) used in Serpentor's creation. His DNA was taken out of the mix when Slaughter damaged the DNA's container just before Serpentor was "born" but it seems that Serpentor still has some of his DNA, since Serpentor seems to display Sgt. Slaughter's kind of behavior at times as well as being unusually strong, it is possible that the other DNA used was also taken from strong people but they were not as strong as Sgt. Slaughter. (cartoon only)
Solomon- In the file card, it is stated that he has the DNA of King Solomon. Solomon was the wisest king in history and he created a great empire through multiple marriages and other forms of diplomacy.
Storm Shadow, Cobra Commander's body guard and trained ninja master. (comics only)
Sun Tzu, one of the best-known strategists of China and the author of the book, The Art of War. Note: Dr. Mindbender attempted to collect Sun Tzu's DNA, but was unsuccessful, forcing him to use the much less patient Sgt. Slaughter's DNA as a substitute. When this happened, Serpentor failed to have patience just like Sgt. Slaughter. (cartoons only)
King Tashaka, the Indian lord of all serpents. He kept a menagerie of various snakes and reptiles at his palace. A fictitious character who cannot be included in real life. (cartoons only)
Vlad Ţepeş Dracula, the most infamous monarch of Wallachia whose tactics were very ruthless. He is best known as the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Count Dracula.
Now that's history!
Oh yeah, along with Destro and Zartan.

Sweet, maybe Joe will get kickbacks from the Oil for Food program. Hopefully, they'll just glaze over his time in Africa.
And perhaps Joe will buy his son a Benz using funds from the Oil for Food...
Or perhaps Joe will continually equivocate without the ability to make difficult decision and instead run amok paralyzed by corruption and the Quixotic search for consensus.

Someone call the Wah-bulance
No one really cared about GI Joe for 25 years and now that he is getting a modern day makeover all of the traditionalists are whining like babies.
Change happens.....deal with it

I'm relieved. The thread title had me worried that Hasbro would be selling a GI Joe that wears an Eagles jersey.
