Meet The Fockers-Way overhyped, not even all that funny
Dodgeball-I tried to make myself think it was awesome, but it was just dumb.
Borat-Not a bad movie, just over hyped
Swingers-Not sure why it's so popular, Vince Vaughn, maybe?
Pulp Fiction-Sue me, I thought it was dumb. Who ****in talks like people in a Tarantino movie, seriously?
The Village-SUCKED ASS
The Matrix-Don't get me wrong, tremendous plot. But come ON this movie was way too long.
Blair Witch Project-If I wanted to see an anti-climactic ending to an hour long argument about people getting lost, I would have gone on a road trip with my family.
The Mask-Jim Carrey's worst comedy. Stupid, but not in a good way like Dumb and Dumber or Ace Ventura
The Godfather-Sorry. But this movie just didn't do it for me. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

There is a difference between overhyped and overrated.
As far as Pulp Fiction, apparently you ****ing do. Who dresses up in Spider outfits and Bat costumes to save a metropolis? Called fiction. That movie is a masterpiece.
The Matrix is overrated for more things than just the length. Keanu Reeves is like Butthead trying to be serious in that movie. The soundtrack is terrible. The movie is only touted because of special effects, and the easily-digestable storyline made people that know nothing about making movies "understand it".
The Mask is a little dumb. Way over the top. But Cameron Diaz, who in general looks like a largemouth bass, was really smokin' in that movie. I'da thrown a spinnerbait right at her.
Blair Witch did have an anti-climactic ending, but only the VERY end. I had to close my eyes in every night-scene of that movie. I think it's actually a little UNDERrated. But to each his own.
*This thread is gonna have some debatable movies. No offense to your tastes man.

Spiderman - A campy movie. The computer graphics are cool, if it were a video game, but I'll buy the Spiderman game if I want that. Give me some real bodies with talented camera angles. The scenes where he scales the city show just how much this movie relied on graphics to drown out the forgettable acting. If that makes the movie good to you, you need an Xbox 360. Otherwise, the Spiderman in Spiderman comics is much edgier than soft little innocent Tobey McGuire. That killed the movie before it even came out, for me. Anybody that knows comics knows that the Green Goblin is some ****. Why the hell did they choose the villain to be freaking Green Goblin? And the mask covering William Defoe's face? Way to cover up the best actor in the film, idiots.
Saving Private Ryan - This movie owns the rights to filming a beach scene for D-Day. I mean what a scene. But otherwise, it drags along, with a decent combat scene here and there. When it comes down to it, this movie was just a practice session for Tom Hanks to make Band of Brothers. Saving Private Ryan is a typical up-and-down movie by Spielberg. Like the blueprint for a Hollywood flick. Let me kill somebody off, then a moral victory, and repeat 5 times. End movie with a depressing, nostalgic feeling, to make it "POWERFUL". I dunno, I can watch this movie, but it isn't the be-all-end-all of WWII flicks. I'd rather watch any episode of Band of Brothers 3 times in a row than this.
The Shawshank Redemption - Now I won't go as far to say this movie isn't good, but after watching it a few times, it's just a feel-good story about a guy that could have done the same thing by getting a plea-bargain. Morgan Freeman is a great narrator, and he singlehandedly kept my interest in this one. It depicts prison as becoming fun when Andy starts making friends. Fun? Let's see if people bake each other pies in prison to say "thanks for doing my taxes." This movie is a melodrama. It's a man's chick-flick. It tried hard to play with your emotions, and it just didn't work for me as much as the average person who has seen it.
Forrest Gump - An eye-opener, pretty good acting, but I can only watch about 20 minutes of it at a time. The glorification factor gets way out of control after a while. It's a pompous story about a savant-like journeyman that can run across the U.S. and back. Give me a break, sometimes I just want the lady sitting next to him at the bus stop to be like...okay sweetie, I gotta go...so the imaginary story Forrest's brain is conjuring up shuts down. A shrimp tycoon that became a god in ping pong, wow. People will still ask if this movie is a true story. Those are the people that compare this corny film to the likes of Citizen Kane and Raging Bull.
Gladiator - I should have put this at the top of my list, because this is the most overrated movie I've ever seen. All I heard was, "you have to see Gladiator!" Well, I did, I actually forced myself to watch this bore-fest of a flick. First, I want to ask everyone why the camera wouldn't stop shaking. This wasn't a WWII flick, there were no guns going off. It was like the cameramen were on PCP, limping around. The storyline was sketchy, like there was a deadline for the writers. The dialog was just as bad, I wish I was on the set of that movie, I would have yelled at the bad guy for being so pathetic in his delivery. Russell Crow is amazingly bad in this film. It has a lot to do with the way the scenes were directed, but watching him is like hearing a bedtime story at 2 years old. Master and Commander and American Gangster are good, but this was by far a surprisingly bad performance by him. I can't get in to it at all, so it's probably my most overrated.

Pulp Fiction-Sue me, I thought it was dumb. Who ****in talks like people in a Tarantino movie, seriously?
The Godfather-Sorry. But this movie just didn't do it for me. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.
Ok, those two are classics of American cinema and there is no way they are overrated. You may not like them, but to call them overrated means you have overrated your own critical senses.
As for films I think are overrated
300- Even though this movie obviously doesn't make historical sense (where are the helots?). It doesn't even make sense within the context of its imaginary world. For example, how in a society where all young men have to be soldiers, does one young man manage to get onto the council of elders without anyone noticing? It was a dumbed down shallow film.
Lord of the Rings- I wont say this is a bad film series, but it certainly doesn't deserve the accolades it has recieved. It drags in numerous parts and sometimes the acting just gets silly. They arn't bad movies but they arn't masterpieces either.
Garden State- Nothing like a boring, monotonous, apathetic film to get your blood going. I'm not surprised that it was popular, culture today seems obsessed with apathy, just saddened.
Napoleon Dynamite- Puzzling, with a title combining the terms "Napoleon" and "Dynamite" you would think there would be something interesting or exciting going on at somepoint, somewhere, somehow in a feature length film. Nope. Just boring characters and a desert landscape.

Citizen Kane is a masterpiece because of how its put together and shot. You won't find an 'American Cinema 101' class in America where you don't dissect it.
Watching it from a 'film student' perspective its an amazing flick.
From a movie lover's POV though, its really not a very likable story, so I can see why you brought it up.

I agree. Ferrell was hilarious on SNL and his skits at awards shows are off the hook. But his bread and butter is gaining momentum when there's a live audience watching. He feeds off of them. Doesn't happen in his movies.

Every word you just stated is why the film is so good. You also describe Seinfeld to an extent minus the desert landscape, which is why Seinfeld was one of the greatest sitcoms ever. The more you watch Napoleon Dynamite the more funny it becomes as you pick up on other nuances you missed the first time around.

I knew that I'd get a lot of crap for Godfather and Pulp Fiction. Not saying they were bad necessarily, just were a little esoteric and insistent on themselves.
And by no means am I saying that Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber are Oscar worthy classics, just a pair of entertaining movies that were funnier than The Mask.
I'm not sure what qualifies a movie as 'being a masterpiece' but I watch movies to be entertained, not to listen to 180 minutes of dialogue that I pretend to like so I don't look like a simpleton.
As for Swingers, I'm sure I'll like it more when I'm 21 and go to Vegas.

Replies to various...
1. Lord of the Rings is a fantastic book series. You think the movies were long? If they had included everything that was in the book, you'd still be in the theater watching them.
2. I don't think Empire of the Sun won best picture. I just checked IMDB, it was nominated for 6 Oscars in 1988, but they were all in cinematography, music, etc. None of the major ones. Some ****-barf film called "The Last Emperor" won best picture; that adjective being applied solely because Empire of the Sun didn't win. Empire of the Sun packs a ton of awesome into two short hours, and has a killer soundtrack.
3. As long as we're talking about overrated, I'm going to nominate almost all remakes. Starting with The Longest Yard. Adam Sandler can choke; Burt Reynolds is the man.

Belushi had two good movies: Blues Brothers and Animal House. Both of which are just a teensy bit overrated. Very funny and they are both classics but I dunno if today's generation would find those movies to be as funny as previous ones. Comedy changes more than any other genre in film.

Batman Begins. I liked the movie, but it's so overrated it's not funny.
How is it overrated? Batman Begins is easily the most accurate and well made Batman movie to date. Christian Bale is second to none as Bruce Wayne/Batman, it has a score made by Hans Zimmer that topped that stupid theme from the 4 Batman movies from before, and the Batsuit is easily the best looking IMO. The only part that could've been changed was Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes. I'm so glad they got someone else for the second film.
Anywho, I'd have to say 300 and The Boondock Saints are a couple of the most overrated movies I'd say. 300 because people like to talk about the history they learned from the movie and sound 'smart', while there are parts of the story Frank Miller took major creative liberties with, and the fact that the acting wasn't complex. There really wasn't anything to any of the roles, anybody, and I mean anybody in Hollywood, could've pulled off the role as the King of the Spartans. Had they not put in the CGI look and the slow down special effects, this would've gone down as another Troy.
And the Bookdock Saints ... frankly all the story is is about two Irish brothers who decide to take the law into their own hands and start gunning down gangsters, all the while a gay Willem Defoe is chasing after them. Yes it was an exciting movie and it's fun to watch a couple times, but I hate it when almost every student on campus talks about how it's such an original film and one of the greatest ever. No! Pulp Fiction pulled the prayer for the shoot thing with Samuel L. already, plus just the general idea itself isn't original. Come on we've all seen it before, plus the way they shoot the film is something Quentin Tarantino does all the time, which in effect he ripped from another director.

I'm sorry, I just can't stand any one of them.
There's plenty more, but these were the first four to come to mind.
I don't eat McRibs either. I just heard they brought them back again. :puke:

Gladiator- Russel Crowe version- evertime Jaquim Phenoix opens his mouth with that crappy British accent I want to smack him. And yes you are reading that right, A movie based in ROMAN times in the ROMAN Empire has a charcater speaking with an ENGLISH accent. that's a pet peeve of mine. I n
fact the Gladiator boxing movie with Cuba Gooding jr is much better IMHO.
Citizen kane- and maybe I am being unfair beacuse I only watched it for the first time last week and could not even stand to watch half of it. The movie was one gigantic ego stroking exercise for writer/producer/director/editor/actor/first grip/cameraman/art director Orsen Wells. Myabe my opion would change if I saw the whole thing but I doubt it.
