Hey guys,
Sorry for posting another #21 jersey thread, but I posted this in another thread and I just feel it needs to be seen.

At the University of Miami the jersey numbers are not retired. If a linebacker is good enough to sport the number 52 then he is awarded that number. People may not know this about Rocky Mcintosh. He didn't just wear 52 at the U. He was awarded 52 for playing like Ray lewis. If he couldn't perform up to 52 standards the team doesn't let him have it. Numbers at U are honored and earned. I don't know of another place that does this. # 26 is also a revered number at the U. Guess which players had that number? Uh hu. Gettin' my point now?

This also alleviates retireing numbers and running out of them. I know I would like to see 21 on the field next year, but the man that wears that number must be able to keep it shiningin the manner that Sean made it shine.

I agree. It sounds sensible. I do think however that Portis should honor Sean and wear 21 from now on.

I like this idea, and it would mean we wouldn't see another 21 for awhile, unless Landry or Portis wear to strap it on. It would give us time for this grief to digest, and see things a little more clearly.

That's what I mean. That's the way it is done at the U. CP knows he can't let the honor of that number down. Thats the hurricane way. Expect him to rip it up on Sunday like no other day in his career. I think this helps the U with all their great athletes.

Don't worry Clinton can hold that number up. LETS GO CP!:point2sky:notworthy

I'd like to see CP wear it this year....but after that I wouldnt want to see it again....Casserly was on washington Post live claiming Sean Taylor is easily replaceable because he is not a QB or a RB......Bull.

if i could choose, i would have portis wear it fro the rest of the year, and then retire it week 17 at the dallas game

It's kind of the same for #31 at Penn State...Paul Posluszny and Shane Conlan both wore that number, and I think a couple others from earlier decades (Ham, Lambert, etc.) may have worn it as well, though I'm not positive. #31 at PSU has kind of become the linebacker number. No one's wearing it this year though. I wasn't aware Miami had numbers you had to earn. Who all has worn 52 and 26 in Miami's history?

Heh.

I know it's not the best time, but the misleading thread title is a little funny.

Reading New Jersey Idea, i figured there would be something relating to big hair, trash, and syringe addled beaches..

Well Ray Lewis, you know. I don't recall anyone having his number until Rocky earned it. Clinton P had 26 and made that number famous. when he was drafted Sean Taylor earned 26. Sean Taylor wasn't 26 his whole time at the U. You'll see players there switch alot of numbers. It's like being promoted.

At a hurricane game when we see a kid in #26 or 52 or 99 you know right now that that person has IT, and It is the talent to be in the NFL HOF one day.

I just think it is a better way of honor him. Clinton Portis is still thought of and talked abut everytime a kid with #26 comes out of the smoke and wind. You don't think to yourself, "hey I wonder if this guy will be as good as Clinton." If you see 26 run out of the smoke that is an honor to CP and to the kid wearing it. Keep your eyes on him. He's special.

This is a special tradition. Lets not stick his number in the rafters to collect dust. Lets see young men fight for the honor to sport the 21. Guess what? You'll see the whole team get better.

I like the awarding of a number, but Rocky wore number 50 at the U.

Also, Portis wore 28 at the U, not 26.

That was an idiotic thing for Casserly to say. Great athletes like Sean, with his range, speed and jumping ability don't grow on trees. I predict it will take at least 2 years to find a suitable replacement, and then, he still won't be as good as Sean.

I was just about to point these out too.

Taylor wore 26, so I think he's saying that a player must live up to Taylor's standards (good luck with that one) in order to be awarded that jersey.

as a longtime UM fan, and big sean taylor fan, im still in shock and sickened by this whole thing. but this post is not factual at all. capt rich has no idea what hes talking about. in college you have 85 schollies plus walk ons and only 99 numbers. its impossible to reserve numbers. for the record rocky mc intosh never wore 52 at UM, he was 50 from day 1. after ray lewis 52 was worn by nate webster, then was given to a walk on, and now tavares gooden. taylor wore 26 from his true freshman year, the year in which the canes beat nebraska in the rose bowl, once he left the number was given to true freshman anthony reddick. CP never wore 26 at UM, he was 28. there is no such thing as numbers being honored and earned.

I dont know. This situation is unpecidented, and (hopefully) will never be duplicated. I say retire the number 21. There will never be another Sean Taylor, There should never be another # 21. I know that it is early in the going, and people are apt to say that more time needs to pass. and that people are making snap desicions, but I truly believe that I will feel the same way after the season is over. RIP Sean

Those facts are wrong. I'm sorry. I could've sworn it was done that way. Rocky was 50. CP was 28. I was completely misinformed and apologize for saying that stuff. I know that is a major sin amongst the board. I will be sure to do proper research before blurting again. Golly day. I watched a whole thing on it one time, but your absolutly correct. I'm sorry for the addition of thread garbage. I still think not retiring the number is a good way to remember him.
