What places are affordable to live in (meaning $1200 or less, maybe semi-close to a Metro stop, not in a crack alley) in this area? I grew up in PG County my whole life, made the mistake of coming down to South Carolina, and want to move back up that way.
Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Give northern VA a try, like Clarendon/Alexandria/Arlington.
Download Google Earth and use that to find the metro lines/stops in places you'd like to consider. Then look for apartments in those areas. You can get in a nice neighborhood for under 1000/month if you want to get a roommate.

Yea, I was thinking about Arlington since I've always loved that area. But no roomies for me - I'm married with a kid due in a few months, heh. :)
I'm sure there are good jobs though where I could make money enough for rent and other things. Thanks for responding.

1200's not going to get you much, especially in the area of VA you're talking about. You'd be lucky to get a 1 bedroom for that anywhere in NOVA or Montgomery County, MD. The housing market has fallen off, people still need to live somewhere. Since people aren't buying, more people are renting and rents are going up. It's what they call a renter's market right now. :)

I'll rent you out the trunk of my car for about $500 a month, plus utilities.
