View Full Version : Not too conservative with TC at the helm

Most surprising/unSkins like calls:

first play off the bench, they have TC throw a pass

the throw to the goal line instead of running to set up a field goal

the TD to Betts out of the backfield (looked like winning NFL teams do)

Getting the ball at the end of the game, instead of running the firsy play, they pass downfield

Isn't it nice to be EXCITED about football again????

Yup

Although the last TD was a 3rd down pass after 2 runs

It was run run pass ;)

heres an interesting line.

we started the 3rd quarter leading 7-0. we ran

run
run
pass (54 yard to portis)
run
run (TD to sellers)

the bears go kick a filed goal, then we go 3 and out. they drive down, get a TD, now its 14-10, and looking grim with 10 unanswered in a very short time. from that time on, we ran:

11 pass plays, 7 run plays. with a lead, in the cold, against a proven defense (although not playing well), we opted to throw more than run with the game on the line.

my question is, would we have done this with campbell in the game? he was throwing a lot when he was in anyways, 10/16 for 100 yards. its just odd to see us not in a prevent offense and it worked this time.

The calls played to Collin's stregnths. Passes out the backfield, and mid crossing patterns. But I cant say I'm excited about this. That was a great win for us, but the bears have a ravagged secondary. If we call those same plays up in New York or in Minny we are toast! A good defense will eat those plays alive!

It is clear that TC knows the offense better and is a more accurate QB. I think Gibbs has been more conservative with JC because he is afraid of him making mistakes. Maybe we rushed JC to fast into the starting role, all we know now this is a different team with TC at the helm.

Yes, the Bears looked like the 'Skins at times...

...but the ol' take what the defense gives you routine...

NY might night give us that look, but take advantage of what they do

Collins played very well. He ran this offence brilliantly. He used the players around him and had fantastic poise. He may be getting on in years but hes still young enough to be Favres son. He hasn't taken to many hits either.

I saw the al saunders offense with Todd in, it makes me wonder if Al Suanders is bias toward Campbell b/c he knows Todd more.

TC = Sanders offense

JC = Learning Sanders offense

That makes it a different team with TC at the helm.

This obsession over Todd Collins is really getting out of control!
JC haters need to come back to earth and stop acting like TC is the next Elway!

I don't think the playcalling was really that different. Our "closing" drive started with more than six minutes left in the game, and even Gibbs doesn't usually start running out the clock that early.

The difference is that Todd Collins picked up third downs and kept the drives going (and the defense held the Bears to field goals twice inside the 5-yard line). The coaches didn't really do anything that different; the players executed a little better, we got lucky at the right times (Griffin stunting the right way at the goal line; Collins anticipating a blitz on the Betts TD), and the outcome was much better.

Let me start off by saying that I am a fan of Campbell and I believe we need to continue to be patient with his progress.

That said, I think its fair to say that Campbells progression has not been nearly as swift as most of us would have anticipated. He has looked good at times, and thats fantastic, because I never expected him to look great this year, he's too young to have those expectations. Our offensive line has not helped the situation, but that excuse can only be used so much since Campbell has clearly been in situations to win ball games, and he has failed at-least two times in this category. I also believe Gibbs has to take some responsibility for keeping the cuffs on Campbell for too long. A young QB is going to make mistakes, let him make them and learn from them now.

As far as this quote, I think youre being a bit melodramatic. I dont think anyone is comparing Collins to Elway. I do, however, think that people, including myself, saw last night in Collins what we expected to see in Campbell at this point in his career. He wasnt great, but he was very good. And I think that gives us hope that we can actually make a playoff run. With Campbell in there, the way he was playing and the way our offense was playing around him, we had zero chance to beat N.Y. and Minn. on the road AND Dallas at home. Todds performance last night gave me a shot of hope, so long as he plays out the season. :2cents:

Exactly. When a plays works, it's great. When it doesn't, it's a terrible call.
Sellars runs it in, "we should do that more often".
He gets stopped, "why didn't we pass the damn ball!"

Unless, or until we are winning games 57-0, there will ALWAYS be someone griping about how they know how to do it better.

Quite comical.

TC = Saunders offense

JC = Learning Saunders offense

Bingo!!

Even though Collins isn't as good an athlete as Campbell, his knowledge of the system is twice as valuable. It was great to see a QB who was sure of his abilities run Saunders offense. The offense was clicking on all cylinders, even though the run game is struggling. We would've won a lot more games last year if Todd would have been named the starter from week one, because he was the only one that even had a clue. Gibbs should have known that.

Exactly.

The bigger question is, why did Collins never get his shot when Brunell was throwing to the flats on every play and Campbell wasn't ready? According to reporters like John Keim, Saunders was lobbying for him to start over Mark from day one.

the biggest single difference between campbell and collins atleast last night was that collins is able to hit the receivers in stride which is something campbell has struggled at.

My God it was so nice to see a real and semi-aggressive offense. If we called plays like that all season there is no doubt in my mind that we would have more wins. Always frustrating that it seems to take Gibbs 5x as long as the fans to figure something out, but let's just hope this continues.

You may be quite possibly the only person in a tristate area, not excited to see us throw the ball downfield, not settle for FG's, and score TD's to completely put a team away.

I agree with all the people that said TC knows this offense. That TD to Betts was nothing but knowing the play inside out and understanding the blitz is comming. JC might have hit Betts but I bet you anything it would have taking him an extra second to throw the ball. In otherwords he would not have been automatic. TC looked like he threw that ball before he even got it shorted out in his throwing hand. Thats knowing the offense people.
