View Full Version : Impact Defensive Linemen

Other than Glenn Dorsey, who are impact defensive linemen in this upcoming draft? (I really don't watch college football in much detail - i know more about the backup d-linemen for Seattle than the starting d-linemen for Oklahoma
Personally, I want a DT more than a DE; I think a big-time DT is *way* more important than a big-time DE; look how much Tennesee's defense struggled when Haynesworth went down.
Of course, you can argue that Montgomery fills that at least in the run support side.

Chris Long is THE impact defensive lineman in this draft, unfortunately for you, he's a DE. And he'll prob go in one of the top 5 picks.
Personally, I think DE is more important than DT for us right now, Phillip Daniels isn't cutting it, we need a pass rush.

Eh, I tend to believe that it's easier to find big-time DEs in the later rounds than big-time DTs; Mark Anderson had 12 sacks as a 6th rounder.
Really, if you can get consistent pocket push, you can manufacture a pass rush pretty easily with athletic but not blue-chip rushers.
Just my personal philosophy - you build a D-Line from the tackles out.

I agree but we have some youth at DT with A-Mont, plus Griffin has been healthy for the most part this year and effective, but Daniels hasn't been very effective. I'd be happy with either honestly as long as we address it and the OL too

In general, for the first pick I want to take the best player available, but if its close between an impact DT, an impact DE, or an impact DB, I'll take the DT.
If you have multiple needs, O-Line should not be taken 1-20 unless it's a franchise tackle that will man the spot for a decade, and Samuels is still one of the best LTs in the game.

With the first pick if we pick a tall impact WR, DE, or DL i will be happy

Use the first four picks on linemen. 2 each for O-line and d-line. Best player available. A stud pass rusher on the opposite side of carter would be a huge boost. But also another stud DT is absolutely necessary going forward. Griffin can't go forever and we need a young, athletic rotation to go along with Monty and Golston.
Does anybody like our o-line depth? Didn't think so. Best available tackles and guard/centers are needed.
You can never have too much depth in the trenches.

Sedrick Ellis from USC is easily a top 20 pick and worthy of a look.

Which is better to have on your team, a DT or DE? That depends on the type of defense that the team plays. I really think the Skins need a DE in Greg Williams' defense that has an emphasis on CBs. You need a DE to compliment the stella job Carter is doing. If you had two Carter type DEs, it would make life much better for the secondary.
I also feel that the defensive position coaches are doing a good job with what we have.

The key to effective pass rush in my opinion is pocket push. That's a constant in nearly any defense you run. Even if you're not getting a lot of outside pressure, if you're pushing the pocket into the QB's face, especially on 3-step drops, you're suddenly getting a lot of tipped passes at the line, the short throws are a bit less accurate, and even though you won't get many sacks per se (assuming you don't have that top-tier outside pass rush,) you'll not only disrupt the short game, but you'll make them one-dimensional in the same way that stuffing the run early does - actually even more so, since not only are they forced to pass, they're forced to pass *long* all the time, and that will facilitate pass rush if you only have *average to above-average* pass rushers.
Not saying that DE isn't important. And you do make a fair point that we have youth at DT more so than at DE (though I think Golston is only an adequate starting tackle, and ideally should be a 3rd tackle/pass rushing tackle. Monty is going to be a John Henderson type tackle IMO but we need at least a Stroud to be that bookend.)
But prioritizing DT first solidifies both your run defense (and great run defense in and of itself creates great pass rush; when we were essentially the best defense in football, we gave up only 3.1 ypc on the ground, and that's why Williams's blitzes worked so well then - the other team was one-dimensional.)
Also, I kind of feel you can find an impact DE in FA easier than you can with a DT. Obviously you're not getting a Dwight Freeney, but you can get a Jared Allen, while it would be hard to get that kind of caliber DT.
Incidentally, I heard Lawrence Jackson's name last year as a top-tier pass rusher, and haven't heard of him since - how good is he?
My ideal draft right now would be:
DT
DE
OL
WR
OL
DE
here's hoping we can get a few more picks ^^

DE Gholston from Ohio State. He'd be in the middle of the first round. He's a good pass rusher, good against the run and not a small DE like Carter.

Griffin had a decent game last night, but he has really slipped since coming here in '04 IMO. Obviously he's had problems staying healthy, but even when healthy he doesn't seem to get the same penetration. He was an easily noticeable team leader, now I just don't see it anymore.

DE Calais Campbell from the U...dude is a beast. I hope he is around when we make our pick.

Chris Long is the MAN. I hope we somehow get him. We def need a DE now that we dont have ST to roam anymore.

That's the guy I like to. He's 6'7" and like 280, and he's from the U.

We won't have a shot at Chris Long, so IMO if we're going DE our best options will probably be Vernon Gholston, Calais Campbell or Quentin Groves.
DT - Forget Dorsey... so Sedrick Ellis (likely gone by pick 12) or maybe Kentwan Balmer though he'll likely be a late, late first rounder.
I've said it before and I'll say it again though, I wish we'd go offense (OT, OG, WR) with our first rounder and make a point to land Trevor Laws, DE from Notre Dame in round 2. Kid is gonna be a stud.

From the title, I thought this thread was about giving credit to our current d-lineman who deserve it. Forgive me if I do...
I think Griffin is our best d-lineman and we would give up BIG rushing yards up the middle if it weren't for him. Thanks Griff!
I also gotta give credit to Carter, he has stepped up in a big way and is a threat. Then there is Daniels, he's very smart and often tips passes when he can't get to the QB. He also reads the offense very well and won't easily get faked on a screen.
I like our d-line, the coaches were correct (unlike many here) in placing their trust in them instead of bringing in new players.
here is to our dline!

I dislike first-round DEs. Second round is where the gems are. Could be silly logic though.

Since the Skins might actually have picks in this draft. Lawrence Jackson from USC is a second round option at end. Dre Moore from Maryland is an amazing athlete at tackle, so he may be a second or third rounder.

We need a DE, but not another undersized pass rusher like Carter. I like Andre, but two of him would not be good for the run game. I actually think Phillip Daniels is very underrated. I'd happily take a younger version of Phillip with a bit more pass rushing ability.
