View Full Version : What Kind of Fan are you?

Reading a little of TR1's exploits got me thinking about how different fans are.
TR1 mentioned how he saw more high school and college displays than pro football. I think you see more of that because it's either kids, who's social lives revolve around the sport they play, or the parents supporting their kids. Personally, showing support of my kids would be the only reason I'd consider putting a bumper sticker on my vehicle.
I suspect that many fans are like myself these days. We follow our teams, many of us wear our colors on game days, but are otherwise just normal folk. Our favorite sports teams don't define who we are.
Its funny, I've been a Cowboys fan all of my life, watched almost every game even during the painful years at the end of Landry's career. However, I never owned a jersey until this year. It's just not something I worried about.
How about you? Are you that rabid fan that owns every piece of merchandise your team ever put out? Do you get everything in your team's colors?

I was a Cowboys fan, but now, I don't know, I am a free agent.
I am looking for a team.
2 weeks ago, I was an Eagles fan, and last week I was a Ravens fan.
This week, I'll be a rabid Steelers fan waving the terrible towel.

I'm a diehard, but I don't wear silver and blue where ever I go. I'm pretty normal when it comes to merchandise, I think. I have the normal few Cowboys shirts, a sweatshirt, cap, and a pair of pants. I have two jerseys (Irvin and Marion Barber). I don't have any stuff for the car, and frankly don't need any. Oh, and also one Cowboys banner hanging over the TV.
Pretty much everything else I have is meant for gameday purposes, like tailgating things. A few fold-out chairs, beer mugs, etc. On gameday, I'll wear a jersey of course, but I don't feel the need to put on Cowboys colors on every other day, and to every place I go.

Pro fan. I didn't wear much high school stuff, though I played sports there, and now I'm at the University of Maryland and don't wear any UMD gear.

I am sick and tired of the Cowboys. Jerry Jones is the biggest reason for giving up my fandom for the Girls. Every single day, I root against them.
I don't know anymore. I might just be an NFL fan now. I prefer to be a fan of a respectable franchice with respectable fans, like the Steelers, or the Colts. Other part of me says you need to be a fan of 'almost' teams like the Cardinals or the Browns.
Either way, I am in no way affiliated with the Dallas Cowboys or Toni Romo.

It's never really bothered me, one way or another, how fans choose to enjoy the game, as long as they don't infringe on someone else's enjoyment.
I've been a Cowboys fan since the 70s. I also go to a lot of Boise State Broncos games in my hometown, and try to go to a Cowboys game once a year. I went to the first Giants-Cowboys game in Irving and the Seattle playoff game last year. Just an average fan. I collect sports shot glasses. I have a couple of Cowboys jackets and Cowboys baseball caps, but those are mainly gifts from family members. I am not outwardly brash or feel the need to act like an idiot when it comes to football. I enjoy more of the analytical side of the game and I also enjoy watching good players, regardless of the team.
I really enjoy fantasy football and got fortunate in my fantasy league this year. I drafted both Tom Brady and Adrian Peterson. It's been a great year to say the least.

Fanhood is such a gangta word, it should be banned from this website. There are kids and teachers who are regulars here, no need for them to be exposed to the gangsta culture.

I grew up in D.C./MD watching Gus Frerotte. My dad would get pissed and turn off the game, my mom would stay in the room and turn it back on cause she's a better fan, though my whole family really loves the skins... I didn't see a winning season until 1999, and didn't see another one until 2005. Darrell Green was my favorite player up to his retirement, after which Sean Taylor became my favorite- though I had a Champ Bailey authentic that I got altered to a Springs authentic...I wore it probably 50% of the time in high school. Last year I got a Taylor authentic that I wore less because I wanted to keep it in good condition.
I have probably been to 30+ Redskins games...only 2 of them at RFK, the rest at FedEx, though my family has never owned season tickets (they will soon). I never rooted for or liked any other NFL team.
I don't get as livid/angry when we lose as other fans I know. I just sort of sigh and feel like **** the rest of the week, I don't normally outright call for somebody to be cut/fired/killed if they make a mistake, whether it's the play calling of Gibbs, Saunders, Williams, etc. I will criticize things I think are dumb, and make fun of players I think are bad, but I love the team and understand I have no control over what happens so getting all upset is useless and being hopeful and faithful isn't.
I have watched every game since about 1996 with the exception of the 36-0 beating we took in 2005 from the Giants. I was at my great grandmother's funeral for that one. I have never turned off a game early in disgust, and I love this team. I spent a lot of time learning the history of the franchise, and in the NFL in general, I know most of the starters on most teams, and I know every NFC East about as well as I know the Redskins personnell wise.
I never really get into arguing and fighting w/ fans of other teams. I hate certain teams and find their fans annoying, but I have seen people threaten back and forth or talk **** at games...I never take part in that stuff. If somebody wants to talk to me about the game and they are a fan of the other team I will usually keep it civil and intelligent or just not talk at all. Some people think unless you are the beer chugging, shirtless drunken retard in the stands putting down fans of other teams and making an ass out of yourself all game is being a good, hardcore fan. I call it being an idiot. I would hope the good model for a fan is the intelligent one but w/e.
I don't watch college football because I think of it as minor league baseball...they're just training for the big leagues, the players switch around all the time, there are too many teams, or too many forgettable teams, and I'm not sure how the rankings work to begin with...I mean I have watched a few national championships and UMD games but it never really interested me.
Thats about it.

I'm a redskins fan, duh. I watch every game. I don't lose my voice or throw things at the TV when I watch. I do hit the wall when they give up a huge pass play or a long fg. I look forward to every football game. I became a skins fan in 2005, really heavily. Short fan life, I know. The long wait for the offseason made me become a fan. 2006 was hell. The long wait then 2 games of suck. 2006 passed and it was another long offseason.
The season hasn't gotten pretty hard to watch since Taylor died. I couldn't get into the Bears game. I know enough about football to have a conversation with anybody. I never played organized ball, though.
I'm more than a casual fan. I guess I could be called die-hard.
My definition of a die-hard fan is someone who gets affected emotionally by a team when they lose or win. When they win, you have a pretty good week. When they lose, your friends can tell by your face. All your friends say its just a game, calm down. But, you know, it is always more than that. You hate bandwagon fans that don't know anything about their team. On any given time, your fine with talking pro football, college, or any other type.

I live, breath and sweat burgundy and gold, I have been a Redskins fan for longer than some of you have been alive. I don't own a jersey, I have several shirts with the Redskins logo on them, however I have never owned or cared to own a jersey. Does this make me bad? ;)
I could care less if someone is a bandwagon fan or not. It seems a silly to me to even debate the subject. Who cares? I guess a lot of people do, since I have seen a lot of "Your a bandwagon fan threads" on this site lately.
Perhaps I was shaped by Black and White television, growing up your team was either in light colored uniforms or dark colored uniforms. No one wore team colors, because half of us didn't know what the colors were. But we knew who the players were, and which high school band performed at the halftime show. You do know that they have halftime shows at the game? Back then they showed the halftime show on TV. NFL games were played on Sunday during the day. We didn't have replay, if you missed a play it was gone, you didn't get to see it over and over.
now I watch a game on a 56 inch color tv in DPL so clear that I almost feel like I'm at the game, no ghosts and several analysts to tell me what I just saw, and how I should feel about it. I think your bandwagon fan is someone that listens to the color analysts too much.
