As I listend to Bryant Goofball I started to go over in my head who are the worst NFL Play by Play Annoucers out there. I know that Goofball has the title but I just wanted to know you're thoughts and opinions of who's in second?

Riggo-toni
December-7th-2007, 01:20 PM
Gum-ball stands so far above (or below) everyone else, it's hard to contemplate who the second worst might be. Gum-ball has the most acute case of cranial-rectal inversion ever heard amongst play-by-play guys.

Gumble never was a play by play guy. When he was with NBC's when they did the AFC he was the pregame studio guy. He was pretty good with that. Doing play by play he's a fish out of water.

Why? What did he say? I missed his commentary because I was at the game.

I muted him lots of the game cuz I can't handle his terrible voice and but here are a few i picked up:

-Called Betts when he caught his first pass: Chris Cooley, took a moment to realize it was betts.

-Said Smoot made an "arm tackle" when he wrapped up the ball carriers feet

-As mentioned by another member above, said he "appears to have the first down" when we got several yards past the marker. He does that alot

-When Fletcher batted the ball down and it was clear as day that it was him, (even my wife knew it was) he said "it may have been london fletcher"

-As mentioned by another member above he called the kick "Good" when it landed clearly short, dropping in the endzone.

-Called Stephon Heier: Steven Hair

Gumble is terrible. Seemed like every ball that hit a player then hit the ground he always says "And he makes a great catch, (few seconds go by) wait they are calling that an incomplete pass?", then "the kick is up and good, wait they are saying no good? oh its short"

Then when we blocked a FG he says "That has no chance. That guy is acting like he blocked it, wait he did block it" paraphrased this one.

"cooley with the drop, wait thats Betts."

These are just off the top of my head.

December-7th-2007, 03:34 PM
While Gumble was bad, I thought he was better than Eagle was this last weekend. At least Gumble does not get ahead of the play and call things before they happen. However, his tendency to hedge everything drives me nuts. How many times did players get tackled 3 to 5 yards beyond the 1st down marker last night and Gumble says hedges the first down call. The guy is afraid to be decisive about any call or so it appears to me.

A play by play guy should not be as reactionary as Gumble is. He relies on the Refs to make the call (hence "what appears...." "they say..." "they're calling it...", etc.)... well jesus, any fan of the game can see what the refs are saying. A play-by-play guy just needs to know how to describe a play (running, passing, and general specifics/details thereof like screen, slant, counter, to the left, bootleg, deep). If the play looks incomplete, say it and don't correct yourself unless the refs reverse the call.

Reading this thread makes me so glad I ended up buying tickets to the game instead of sitting at home listening to Mumble and Colinsworthless.

Gumball!

I can't stand it when it is 4th down and the team is punting and he says "and they turn it over on downs".

NO JERKOFF, IF THEY WENT FOR IT ON FOURTH DOWN AND DID NOT MAKE IT, THEN THEY TURN IT OER ON DOWNS!!!

And when it is third and two and the team runs for 6-10 yards, "It appears they have the first down".

NO _____ing ___t!!!

JOe Buck sucks to. He is biased to the winning teams, and he thinks he knows everything there is to know.

He thought what Randy Moss did a few years back in Green Bay was so bad (the mooning thing) and called it utterly distusting.

But he thought Manny being Manny and taking a dump in the middle of the game was funny.

I like Joe Buck and his dry sense of humor, but I can see how his personality could rub some the wrong way. However, when it comes down to the essentials of play-by-play -- being timely, descriptive, and accurate -- he's a pro.

Gumbel is just....let's just say that after hearing all of the complaints, I'm doubly glad that I listened to the radio stream online while watching the game last night. I was almost embarrassed for him at some of the mistakes he made in the Packers/Girls game.

Gus is amazing when calling those NCAA tournament games. The Gonzaga/UCLA game was probably his finest moment.

But have you ever seen him call an NFL game? He can make the Dolphins at the Texans sound like a Super Bowl.

The 2007 Gus Johnson NFL moment for me came during the week when the Patriots played the Colts. 99% of the USA had that game and the other 1% had the Texans at the Raiders. Late in the 3rd quarter, the Raiders cut the lead to 17-10 on a Justin Fargas 1 yard run. As the game went to commercial, Gus says teh following:

"You thought the game of the day was in Indy? We got it right here......HA HA" (With that demonic laugh of his)

I've seen a few but not many. Since he's a CBS guy, I rarely see him because he's usually doing a AFC-AFC game, which I rarely watch. And if I AM watching a CBS game, if it's the Cowboys, it's usually Jim Nantz calling it. Maybe it's a regional thing, I'll have to research that or something. I'd take him over Jim Nantz any day.

Al Michaels

And then Gumble and Buck are in a class of suck all on their own. They think way too highly of themselves and are way overrated. They don't seem to have much knowledge or care for the game. No passion, no talent.

So what's the likelihood that Gumbel is doing the NFL Network games next year?

Someone PLEASE tell me they don't have a multi-year contract with him...
I hope he's not back. I got this from wikipedia...

The NFL Network

Main article: Run to the Playoffs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run_to_the_Playoffs)
In April 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_2006), the NFL Network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_Network) announced that Gumbel along with Cris Collinsworth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cris_Collinsworth) and Dick Vermeil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Vermeil) would call its new package of NFL games. Gumbel had never called play-by-play (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play-by-play)[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryant_Gumbel#_note-2) for live sporting events in his career.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryant_Gumbel#_note-3) Even before he called his first game for the network, Gumbel's status was brought into question after he stirred up controversy in his closing remarks on his HBO program on August 15 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_15), 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_in_television). In these remarks, Gumbel criticized NFL Players Association (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_Players_Association) head Gene Upshaw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Upshaw) and outgoing NFL Commissioner (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=NFL_Commissioner&action=edit) Paul Tagliabue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Tagliabue). Gumbel would later reconcile with the NFL and has retained his play-by-play job with the NFL Network.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryant_Gumbel#_note-4). Bryant has been given the nickname of "Bryant I don't know **** about Football Stumble" for his awkward and stumbling play-by-play job on the NFL network and never playing a single down for the NFL.
