View Full Version : Redskins Debate Series: All time TOUGHEST Redskin

Through the years we've seen many redskins players come and go so in today's Redskins Debate Series I wanted to know who in your mind is/was the Toughest Redskin. It can be one or a number of Redskins who've displayed toughness. Fought through injuries etc. etc. For me the list goes like this.

1. Riggo
2. Gary Clark
3. Sonny Jurgensen
4. Sam Huff

and this may surprise you (or it may not) but....

5. Patrick Ramsey

Ok folks it time to weigh in.

Thats an easy one. There is only 1, Pat Fischer.QFT! I never saw him play, but I have watched footage of his style. For a small, slow guy, he placed EVERYTHING he had on the line every play. Him on defense and Gary Clark on offense should be the way everyone plays. If we could get all 53 men to lay it on the line like that every play, we would be something special.:2cents:

Not too many people will agree but Coles was tough as nails when playing for the skins. I have seen Art Monk catch a ball and turn around and truck a DB. But Coles went across the middle like no other he would get crushed by The Roy Williams Brian Dawkins and Micheal Lewis' of the league and hold onto the ball and pop up and strut 5 yards. He also played with a lot of heart. Can't forget when he saved the touchdown on a fumble when he chased the guy down 50 yards and made the tackle and forced another fumble.

Hard to narrow it down to one:

1) Billy Kilmer- One bar face mask, would get clubbed in the nose, shove some gauze in it and trot right on back out.

2) Ken Houston- Tough as nails and a vicous hitter.

3) Larry Brown- I have never seen a running back take as many hard shots.

4) Pat Fischer- Undersized and as tough as leather.

5) Kurt Gouviea- Dude was wide open.

6) Darrell Green- Anyone who can last at corner as long as he did? Enough said.

7) Clinton Portis- Blocking and tackling after turnovers. No regard for his body.

I agree with many that have been mentioned already, but also, how about Darrell Green? 20 years, played through injuries, and that vision of him holding his chest on the kick return is classic.

Of current Skins, Smoot also played with a sternum injury, plays "bigger" than he is with little regard for his own body, and the story of how he "snuck" back into the game this week after throwing up blood is pretty tough.
And you can't talk about this subject without mentioning Big Mike Sellers.

Without question! Most of you younguns' have no idea about this guy, but at 5'7" and about 165 lbs. this guy was just ferocious out there. He backed down from no one. Rarely, if ever, missed a tackle, and owned much bigger receivers.

Harold Carmichael at 6'9" 225 was petrified of Fischer, as were many other WRs, RBs, and QBs in the league.

Go find some 60's and early 70's footage, number 37 will be all over it!

Well, none other than Howard Cosell once said this Redskin "takes more punishment than anyone in the NFL" or something along those lines. He was referring to Benny Malone. He must have been taking some punishment since he only averaged 2.7 yards per carry.

Seriously though, I'd have to go with Kilmer. He'd get beat to a pulp and keep going.

Just food for thought here, but I'm noticing an overwhelming trend........If you tallied the total amount of African American players vs. Caucasian players who have played for the Redskins over the years, the percentage would be overwhelming. HOWEVER, as I go through this thread, 2/3's of the votes are for Caucasian guys. Not attempting to start a racial war here, but merely throwing that out there as food for thought.

To me, its of the same ilk as the "smart, heady, white basketball player".....and "the tough white guy football player."

I personally disagree with this line of thinking that occurs so naturally to others.

That said, Mark Mosely was clearly the toughest Redskin of all-time (just kidding).

My mistake, like I said...he retired 10 years before I was born

Either way he's even getting overlooked in this thread. He had an amazing consecutive game streak at a position and in a decade where people didn't stay injury free for long. He also made something like 9 pro bowls- the most in Redskins history.

Seems tough to me.

here's one that no one has mentioned

Fred Smoot

Last game, he tricked the trainers to go get something for him just so he could come out and play again after puking his guts out.

Also, before he went to minnesota, i remember him having a shoulder injury that was apparantly pretty painful, but he still tackled WR/RB's in the flat like a pro. You could tell each takle hurt him.

Also, Darrel green was pretty tough. See punt return vs Chicago.

Legendary Redskins athletic trainer Bubba Tyer characterized #37 as the toughest player he’d ever encountered. When Darrell Green, an NFL great in his own right, one day reportedly described himself as a more "physical" player than Fischer, Tyer claimed all he could think was, "yeah, right."

Does anybody remember that pic of Jacoby's hand in SI when they did that long cover feature on NFL injuries of retirees?

Jake's fingers are gnarled like tree roots.

This was back in 2001, but I can't imagine they look any better today.

Much of the damage probably came in the 1986 (Jan. '87) playoffs when he had his hand completely wrapped into a ball of tape for the NFCC game @the Meadowlands. Looked like a mummy's head on the end of his arm.

That was pretty tough not to sit it out when he only had one pincher.

Gary Clark and Pat Fischer are up at the top for me with an honorable mention going to D Green mainly for his performance in the 87 playoffs.

Two guys popped into my head immediately:

1) Pat Fischer
2) Larry Brown

There are others who deserve mention (Billy Kilmer, Deacon Jones, Art Monk, Sammy Baugh and more) but those two just jumped out at me.

Kinda surprised your list didn't include #21ST# Even though he was with us for a short time -- I really think he more than showed his toughness.

I agree with this, in his short time here ST made a huge mark and proved to be one of the toughest players since I don't know who

Alvin Walton

Anybody who wanted an inexpensive jersey this year could have bought an authentic Archuletta on clearance at TJ Max for $10, only to tape over the nameplate and write in Walton.

It would have been an original use of an otherwise worthless #40 Skins jersey.

Monte Coleman never complained about his salary, he just played for 16 seasons.

Portis has really been banged up with us, and for him to be still putting up decent numbers shows a lot about his character :applause:

Ive been looking for a while for a cheap 40 jersey to do just that to. Except I have a better plan than tape to convert it.

Hard to get old Skins jerseys in NC. Ive checked ebay but they still want 30-40 for an Arch jersey.

Pat Fischer - todays big mouth receivers like T.O who be scare to death if they had to go up against a DB like him playing with the old bump & run rules (The way football is meant to be play)

Gary Clark - nobody was or will ever be as tough going over the middle (should be in the HOF along with Art Monk)

Sammy Baugh - One of the all time great QBs & DBs, plus he could punt when needed. Lets not forget that he played with a leather helmet without a facemask

Chris Hanburger - An undersized player that play much bigger than his size (Also should be in the HOF)

Dave Butz - Nobody clogged up the middle better, plus just look at his Helmet did he play a game or go to war (Another Redskin that should be in the HOF)

Darrell Green - 20 yrs of excellent football, that is enough proof right there. Also if he would have been the regular punt returner he would have every record in the book. (Should be going into the HOF very soon)

Brother, I'm with you there. That sob straight brought the lumber on ANY wideout foolish enough to cross the deep middle. Pure hitter.

Chris Hanburger never made a tackle below the jawline, he was a monster with a vice grip, and used to throw running backs, and quarterbacks around like rag dolls....
he was amazing for his size

Dave Butz. That guy was awesome. He loved to stuff the run. Any of the Hogs. Of course the Diesel #44. Cooley, that guy is tough, he never goes down and always gives second effort which I love. Sean Taylor and Portis, they are just hard hitting players who never seem to quit.

I still have my old school Reggie Brooks #40 jersey. Bought it around the time that I started drinking the big 4-0 in high school.

Hmm... well Chris Hanburger only missed 2 games through 12 seasons as our middle linebacker...9 straight years without missing a game. He must have been pretty tough to do it, but I couldn't tell you. He retired 10 years before I was born.

I grew up in the same neighborhood as his son. The hardest hit i ever experienced playing football was from his son. I can only imagine how hard Chris Hanburger hit.

How about Kenny Houston? Rich Milot and Neil Olkewieckz(sp?) too. Those guys were rocks at LB in the 80s. And don't forget Dave Butz and that gashed up helmet of his.

On offense, Doc Walker, Don Warren, and pretty much all the Hogs.

My others have already been mentioned. Hanburger, Walton, Coleman, Riggo.

i will have to agree with all of the above.. lol.. you named just about everyone on my list

The toughest Redskin of all time was Larry Brown. He made plays without a helmet and he wouldn't lay on the field! He would crawl off of the field first.

I am surprised it took so long for his name to come up. LB has my vote.

I second that, a little short guy used to tap dance on receivers knees. No receiver wanted to go against Pat.

I was split between Larry Brown and Pat Fisher. l'll give it to Larry Brown. He played the last year of his career on one leg.

Pat Fisher was tough, too. Ask Calvin Hill who met him coming around the LT and was met there and layed out. No other than Mister Pat Fisher. Ask Roy Green, Ask Harold Carmichael. He was tough. You had to watch him for a while to appreciate him because at first you would label him as the weak point in the defense until you noticed that players and coaches avoided calling plays to that side of the field on critical downs.

It only goes to show that everyone has a different opinion on toughness. Pat Fisher, Larry Brown, Neil Olkewitz. The one who I have always thought was the toughest is Brian Mitchell. Like him or not (I do not) He was one bad SOB!

DCMONEY

Hell there are so many from the 80's early 90's era.

Gary Clark--Bad hamstrings but always suited up
Monte Coleman-- Same Thing
Dave Butz-- His helmet said it all. Just couldn't move him
Actually too many to name from back in the day.

Can't leave out cats like SONNY jURGENSON, Lary Brown, Bobby Mitchell and Charley Taylor and Pat Fischer

In the more recent Skins I'd say

Champ Bailey never missed a game as a Skins despite being hurt
Fred Smoot-- Nuff Said Smoots like a Timex watch
James Thrash
Portis
Sean Taylor--if he came out of a game, then he must've been truly hurt

Smoot Point Really
