T.O. to get his camera time

By Gil LeBreton
Fort Worth Star-Telegram

FORT WORTH - Though he left the stadium using crutches and sporting a twisted ankle, Terrell Owens was reported to be "in good spirits" Saturday night.

Of course he was, because the NFL Network cameras were all over him.

Unofficially, I'm guessing, it was the first nationally televised X-raying of an ankle in professional sports history. When the injured Owens retreated to the locker room during Saturday night's first half, the league's signature network began flaunting its uniquely invasive access privileges. Good thing Terrell didn't decide to jump in the whirlpool.

And now comes the wide receiver's favorite part: The fuss. The coast-to-coast attention. The daily updates.

Brace yourself for "As the Ankle Turns," the TV reality show that Owens has probably always dreamed of.

This is a serious turn of events, though. You realize that, don't you?

After winning 13 of 15 games, this is the snake in the road that the don't-worry-be-happy Cowboys had heretofore avoided. This is the misfortune that could finally wipe the smile from head coach Wade Phillips' face.

With the holiday at hand, Santa Jones apparently didn't want Sunday to ruin anyone's Christmas. So the official prognosis from Valley Ranch mentioned that Owens' status would be determined "week to week."

The owner and the coach steered their issued statements Sunday afternoon toward the Cowboys' clinching of home-field advantage for the postseason.

Great news, indeed. But that's no longer the story.

A year ago, Owens was a selfish, spiral-dropping, Parcells-annoying distraction. Not worth the fuss or what Jerry Jones was paying him.

Twelve months later, however, his value to the offense has been firmly re-established. He is the yin to Tony Romo's yang. Throughout the 13-2 season, Owens has commanded attention. This time, for all the right reasons.

The Carolina pass defense Saturday night clearly allowed itself to be consumed by thoughts of Owens.

By halftime, Romo had completed passes to eight receivers. The Panthers seemed fixated on not allowing Owens to get behind them.

Owens, whether he plays or watches on crutches, changes defenses. If you don't realize that, watch the Redskins on Sunday and the Cowboys' first playoff opponent in three weeks.

Officially, Cowboys Inc. is calling Owens' injury a high ankle sprain. He won't be dancing anytime soon, but that's OK. Owner Jones was already tap-dancing for him, when he said Saturday, "We know that T.O. is a quick healer."

Most NFL players who suffer the same injury aren't, however. As someone said a few weeks ago, "Normally, if it's a high ankle sprain, it's like four weeks (to recover)."

I agree. I didn't think Owens would go to these lengths to gain more attention. I mean, a well orchestrated faking of an injury to gain more attention? Ohh, and did you see the way he writhed around in pain after he went down? The man belongs in Hollywood. What will T.O. think of next? He's clearly the worst person ever. Well either him or Michael Vick.

I'm so glad that I'm going to the game on Sunday instead of watching it on TV. We would be hearing and seeing more of Terrell than the game itself. Odds are something would end up flying through my television.

I'll grant you the holiday DWinzit. :) But it's back on tomorrow! BTW, what's your take on the big game? Do you already have your skins penciled in @ Lambau for the conference championship game?
