It's free. That's all you need to know.

Just got it a couple weeks ago and been playing Call of Duty 4 online like it's my job. It's awesome.

I just bought a 80gig on saturday. I got motorstorm with it i like the game and my kids love it. I bought call of duty 4 which is a sick game but i beat it already so i'm gonna go trade it in. I also got fightnight rd3 and madden 08. That madden is a completly different game then on ps2. They really po'ed me with this 1 all the controls are different and took away the passing cone. They also won't allow you to click r2 before the play to double check your routes and visulize which stinks.

I like the system though seems to have great graphics..

I do have some questions for others though.

I bought the component video cable for the ps3 thinking it would give me a better picture then what comes with the ps3 but it was black and white. Then i could get it to work where my hd cable box plugs into my tv but then i had no sound.

Could i run a hdmi cable from my playstation 3 to the hdmi cable hookup on my hd cable box??

i don't have a hdmi hookup on my hd tv just the hd cable box..

I tried it online and thought it sucked. Little kids voices coming thru my tv set, it was crazy. I'm use to socom online and even on ps2 it crushes call of duty online.. I can't wait for Socom to come out on PS3..

And i beat Call of duty 4 on the 2nd hardest setting in 4 days but i played it quite a bit, up late.

Thats why you have to get a headset and tell them to shut the **** up. :D

I don't have one yet, but I was playing online today and this guy was making fun of this kid, it was hilarious. Even better, he was killing the kid left and right and the kid was getting flustered.

I gotta think you're in the minority about COD4 online....what games did you try to play? Free for all is where it's at.

I heard very mixed reviews on assasins creed they say it looks great but the gameplay is alittle iffy thats why i did'nt get it. I heard Kane and Lynch is just awful has well.. I believe i might buy drakes fortune i downloaded the demo from the ps3 store and the 1st level got me hooked. I just hate buying games like COD 4 and drakes fortune because i'll beat them and lose interest. Atleast madden i can play online constantly and i can't wait for socom on ps3.. COD 4 is a great game on 1 player and i'm gonna give online a few more shots but i might go trade it in on drakes fortune.

I just got done playing COD 4 online playing free for all its like respawn on socom. I did enjoy it much more then earlier when i tried i played for a good bit. Its cool you can sneak up behind people and cut them. I also saw some guys flying helicopters shooting people not sure how you do that. My main beef right now is the mic. In socom you push O to key the mic to talk and the voices come thru your ear piece when someone else is talking. In COD4 I can hear echos thru my tv its not clear at all except for the moron steadly dropping N bombs thru the game, i have no idea how to talk myself or to get thier voices to sound right.

And playstation online has always been great i play Madden,NBA 2K,NASCAR and Socom is the **** online you got thousands of people on and the game is a masterpiece online, i wish they would release confortation already.

You get the choppers by getting 7 kills in a row.

3 kills in a row gets you radar, 5 kills in a row gets you an airstrike, 7 kills in a row gets you a chopper.

Yeah, there are some idiots online, I heard someone dropping N bombs earlier. I've also heard some really funny stuff though :)

You get what you pay for. That having been said, the PS3 online interface varies largely from game to game but the basis of it (friends list, chat functions, etc.) is done simply and done pretty well. What you dish out money for with Live is complete integration of all your games into one pretty comprehensive service.

Live is seemlessly integrated and more consistent from game to game while the PS3 can be inconsistent (EA's Madden servers SUCK but most other games are set up pretty well). Personally, I prefer not continuously shelling out cash to Microsoft but a lot of people think its all worth it.

I have my headset hooked up. Do i need some sorta special headset? does it have to be plugged up in a certain port??

I don't hear nothing thru my mic and can't figure out how to talk. All i can hear is mumbled voices thru my tv set. I got the 3 kills in a row and 5 kills in a row but not sure what it gave me or how to use it. I also can't pick different guns like the m4a1 are you only able to play with the 1 gun listed in each section??

Depends on what online game you're playing. I play free for all deathmatch, every man for himself. To use raider or call in air strike/chopper you hit the right key on the d-pad.

Not sure what to do about the headset as I don't own one...will probably get one soon, though.

I find it hard to imagine that any online multiplayer experience justifies an additional cash outlay -- much less one that repeats periodically ad infinitum. You bought the system; you bought the game. Your payments should be over, unless you're buying legitimate extensions of the game. Multiplayer doesn't fall into that category. It's idiotic to be forced to pay more for it.

Online multiplayer has existed for well over a decade. The fact that it's on your Xbox doesn't make it special. They might as well charge a monthly subscription fee for firmware updates.* It's an insult to the customer.

With that said, my PS3 broke today. It does everything except spin up discs -- making it impossible to watch DVD/Blu-ray movies or play non-demo games. Which, you know, I might want to do occasionally.

It's an amazing testament to the PS3's versatility that even with this hardware failure, it still retains about 50% of its useful functionality. That's pretty impressive. And Sony is replacing it for free, making the inconvenience slightly less infuriating.

But sadly, this will be the generation of gaming systems that makes it "normal" to expect your console gaming system to experience epidemic hardware failures right out of the box. At least the NES took a couple of years of normal use to develop its hardware problems...

*(By the way, does Microsoft charge for access to direct-downloads of firmware updates? That would be hilarious.)

What you need to do is go to settings on the XMB. Then scroll down to accessory setting and select audio device settings. Next, check to make sure that your input and output device is set up to your headset. If your output isn't set to your headset the sound will come out of your tv speakers instead of your headset. I think that you can also do this while you are in chat while not playing a game. You can hit me up if you need help by sending me a chat invite to my PS3 username BIGOAK.

Coming to the PS3 in 2008 is HOME. Home isn't a game but a virtual world that you can meet people, watch movies, listen to music, and play games. Here is a 2 part video of what home is all about.

I was hoping for a PS3 for x-mas just to play on home and to play Little Big World.

No such luck :(.

I picked up COD4 for my 360 the other day and it is incredible, the last two nights though the ****ing game keeps telling me I need an active internet connection to play online, while I am connected to xbox live. When it does work, I sit in the lobby for 30 minutes waiting for it to match me up with players, but it never does.

Good thing I have not beat campaign mode yet, and I have yet to even open BioShock ;)

After reading the list of offerings, I still don't understand why it would be a pay service. Particularly if they're just charging something like $4 a month.

It's a small amount of money, but the insult is in the binary decision to charge at all -- not the amount you pay.

I was shelling out 160+ a year for that one game, just to play online, then you had expansion packs and content packs every 6 or so months.

Well, if you're coming from that previous experience, then of course it looks better. Kind of like taking one bath per day in a tub full of diarrhea instead of two, IMO.

I'm coming at it from the other direction: I have never had to pay a single shiny copper Lincoln for any online experience, ever. And plenty of gaming companies have made plenty of money by setting up FREE online experiences that are in some ways BETTER than, say, the latest Halo's online offerings.

Ultimately it's just a matter of personal taste. Is it worth it to pay for something that can be had for free? My answer is no; others obviously disagree.

But if online services all started to cost money, then I'd be pissed at the critical mass of gamers who volunteered to pay for things they didn't have to.

For now, some will pay and some will not, and hopefully it will stay that way -- but this kind of equilibrium is never stable. Ultimately it will go one way or another, which may suck utterly for folks who remember what it was like when you didn't have to pay monthly rent -- however minor, this time around -- just to use a set of game features you've already paid for.

I still have yet to discover why online experiences should require an upcharge, since for a decade and a half (plus) we've seen that business models involving free online multiplayer are plenty profitable. The ship has already sailed.

But, anyway...
