For anyone back in the stone age with me, have you ever had this happen where your game won't load and it just says DISC READ ERROR?
I found an online troubleshooting guide and took the system apart as it said, but bottom line is any of my sports games from '06 and older load right up. Any of my sports games from '07 do not load up.
And I played Madden '07 plenty and never had a problem. Now it won't load. Bought NHL '07 today used and it's having the same problem as the Madden '07.
I put a music CD and DISC READ ERROR. I put a DVD in and it played just fine.
I've got the original fat style PS2.
Any help out there?

Mine started doing that about a year and a half ago. To tell you the truth it's the beginning of the end for that PS2. Mine worked for about 4 or 5 months longer once it started doing that then it died.

Did you buy a new one? I'll go get a new one if it will definitely fix the problem, but it worries me that my current one plays some games but not all. And they all are silver bottomed discs.

I have the newer slim PS2, and I have a similar problem. Everything plays fine, loads fine, never have any problems. But all the DVDs we got my daughter for Christmas won't play, then they play fine on the PC.
I don't get it.

I got a PS3 last year. Best thing I ever did.

For whatever reason the PS2 will not play all DVDs. I have no reason why. The PS3 will play any DVD though.

This happened to me a few weeks ago.
The PS2 is shot. The laser reader wears out over time.
You can either send it to Sony for them to fix... or just buy a new one... or buy a ps3.
The problem will continue to get worse over time.

I used to have a PS2 (beat up on Disco Dave in Madden, all the time ;) ) and apparently there was a problem with the disc reader that could be solved by simply turning the console over...seriously. Not sure if this will still work with yours but it might be worth a try. Anyway, turn it upside down before you turn it on and see what happens...couldn't hurt. :whoknows:

All you guys need to do is take the system apart and clean the disk lense with rubbing alcohol. I fixed my own system no problem, and haven't had problems since.

I had the same exact problem with the "fat style" ps2. NOTHING would load so I took it apart and wiped the lense down with a cotton rag with a small amount of windex. It worked fine for a couple days after that, then it took a **** again. After that i went out and got the newer slim version ps2. No problems since then. If your going to spend the money on a new system, you should probably spend a little extra and go next-gen if you can its well worth the money.

It's going to die on you. You can have the lens replaced at some game stores for about $70.

Mine was having the same problem at one time, but I just gave it some time and it started loading newer games and DVD's again.
My problem was from roomates not turning it off before they were done with it, though. If you let it run too long, it will give you problems. It seemed to fix itself once I stopped using it for a while.
This was for a newer slim version of the ps2, which doesn't have much of a heat ventilation system. The newer ones seem to overheat pretty easily.

9 times out of 10 if the PS3 stops working properly it's because of user error such as not having the PS3 in a well ventilated area or having the system on carpet.
I've had mine over a year now with no problems and I leave it on for days at a time. At the very least my system is on for 12 hours straight. Just send your PS3 back to Sony for a new one.

 I had to do this with the OLD PSone (Xbox sized). It really works, seriously. Imagine trying to play FF VII on christmas and DISC READ ERROR pops up!!! Pissed me off. After about an hour I flipped it and it worked like a dream for 7 more years!

First off buy some air spray and spray the **** out of it. Then, as dude above said, clean the laser lens with some rubbing alcohol. If still no dice, rough up the disc a little bit. I've found that brand shiny new discs won't play sometimes. So I rub them on the carpet just a bit and get a little amount of scratches on it. Always works. I think the little scratches help the laser catch the disc or something? I'm not sure of the exact technological reason. I'm just sure that it works.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I tried pretty much everything y'all said and then some. Couldn't get 'er goin. Went and bought a used slim PS2 last night. I only play occasionally. Not enough to warrant a next gen system. :dallasuck
