View Full Version : Crowd Noise...Really? (Merged)

Seriously, Seahawk fans...let's talk about this.
All week all I've heard is how loud your crowd is gonna be and how much it's going to affect the Redskins. Guess what, I don't give a damn about crowd noise and I'm pretty sure my favorite team doesn't either. Let's say the volume of noise from your speake...I mean fans forces one false start or even two. Do you really think that's gonna make up for the fact that the Redskins defense is going to beat the piss out of your offense? Do you realize that in 2005 when faced with the prospects of running on our physical defense, Shawn Alexander decided to sit out the game instead?
Remember Shawn Springs? There is not one corner in the league I would take over him this season...not one. Not even your precious Marcus Trufant. Matter of fact, I think Trufant will get beat on a double move this weekend. Before he even know Santana has turned deep, the ball will be on it's way and the best Trufant will be able to hope for is to chase Santana down from behind.
How's your pass rush going to help you when Clinton Portis and our offensive line is cramming the ball down their throats? Besides that, did you know that we just faced the Giants and handled their Pro-Bowl defensive ends with an undrafted rookie manning the right tackle spot? The Skins will move the ball.
Look, you guys have a pretty good team, and I mean that. They are pretty and they are good. The Redskins are rugged, battle tested, and oblivious to any kind of adversity coming from the toughest division in the NFC while playing the toughest schedule in the NFC. I mean come on, you won the West? The Patriots took their weak division and rode it to a 16-0 season. The Seahawks rode their weak division to...one more win than the Redskins?
So yeah, wave that 12th man flag as much as you can on Saturday because our 12th man says you won't be able to wave it anymore after that. And I know you are tired of hearing about the Redskins and their love for Sean Taylor. Deon Grant says he doesn't care about the memory of Sean Taylor and how it is making the Redskins tick this season but I assure you, the only reason he doesn't care is that he hasn't seen the fire burning first hand. He doesn't understand the kind of motivation having the opportunity to knock the #1 seed Cowboys off their pedestal by beating them twice in a row is.
Sorry Seattle, but this weekend you are merely a bump in the road to a game that has been destined to come since November 27th. By the fourth quarter Saturday, there is only one noise you will hear coming from football fans:
We Want Dallas!
We Want Dallas!
Hail Skins!!

heard of these teams? These are "tough guy" teams that play in the NFC... 2 in the NFC North and 3 in the NFC East.
We beat each of 'em.
Though the toughest of those teams, the ones that play in the toughest division, also beat us, too. We split with those guys.
Here are some more reasons why:
San Fran
St. Louis
Arizona
Those are, um, y'alls divisional rivals. Nice. Real nice.
Anyway, those are my reasons. Have a good one! Our 12th Man will be watching... and waiting!

...and the only one that I would take on my team is DJ Hackett. Deon Branch is too small (much like our recievers), Engram has a tendancy to drop the ball, and Burleson is only middle of the road. Crowd noise won't make a difference, believe that. What will make a difference is heart and desire. Seattle is strongly lacking both in my opinion.

I'm sorry you must have him confused with Koren Robinson (now on the Packers) or Darrell Jackson (now on the 49ers). Engram is probably the most consistent receiver and Matt's favorite target.

List all the reasons except Sean Taylor why you guys have the edge in thsi game.
1. Your run game is below average. With the Tip Toe Bandit(Alexander) and Morris in the backfield and no Hutch, that will be shutdown(Skins #4 in the league Rush D).
Don't believe me? Ask the Vikings Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor, who are a better combo(and that's with Hutch) than Tip Toe and Morris.
2. This in turn leaves you one dimensional on offense. When all you can do is pass, then this defense will pin it's ears back and get after Hasslehoff..I mean Hasslebeck. ;)
3. Some say that our OT's will be unable to handle your DE's. Umeniyora and Strahan(a better pass rush duo than Tapp and Kerney) and Ware,Canty and Spears didn't seem to bother us that much. And I'd take them over Tapp,Kerney and Peterson as far as pass rushers go.
4. Clinton Portis is the hottest RB in the NFC at this time. Do you drop eight in the box to stop him, leaving the middle open for Chris Cooley or run blitz the Skins leaving Moss in one on one coverage?
That's four...
Now I'm not saying there's no way we're losing this game. We very well could. This team has been through alot and sooner or later it could catch up to us.
Just don't insinuate that we don't stand a chance of winning. We do have weapons that are capable of taking a win up there in Qwest. :)
Just seems to me that lately, despite our run to the playoffs, no one seems to think we can go to Seattle and win.
Most reasons given: Crowd noise and the plane ride to Seattle.
Seriously now. Who do the pundits think they're kidding here??

OK let's be honest here. HAVING LOUD FANS DOESNT MAKE YOU GOOD FANS - by far - at all. The only reason your stadium is so loud is because of the way it was designed. So dont give yourself too much credit. Just ask John Clayton: " On the open end of the stadium are two features that promote crowd noise. An area called the Hawks Nest sits in the end zone. Because they are bleachers, the Hawks Nest seats are constructed of metal..... The noise is amplified off the metal. If fans stomp their feet, it gets louder." Also, because of space limitations in that area of the city you have a tighter stadium then most as well as roof construction designed to cover most seats and therefore more sound is contained in that tighter space.
Now with that said it is obvious that the stadium will be tough to play in with the "fan assisted noise" but we seemed to play well against the Giants a few weeks ago and everyone knows they have a tough loud crowd.
PS why are all you Hawks such fairweather/negative fans? Geez check out the first Seahawks blog I came upon: http://blogs.king5.com/seahawks/archives/2007/12/nfc_playoff_wat.html#comments
But thats a debate for another day....

Wow I took your word for the best WR Corps in the league so i went to NFL.com and I was looking forward on looking for some stats for that so called WR corps and you will be excited to what I found. That you have one receiver rank 13 that is great and did not find anything else after 50. We had three in the top 50 and we are not even a passing team we are a running team. But I am confused doesnt a receiving corps mean that you would have at least have spread the ball around and have 3 or 4 guys in the top 50. And our receivers such as Moss did not play for 3 games and was 32 and Randle EL did not play 2 or 3 games and he was 46th. And our TE was 37th and he is a TE. So all this tells me is that you guys throw to one guy!!! We are really scared of this one guy and that noise you are talking about!!!

Dude, go up and read where this started. It started because one of your REDSKINS fans said that he has never heard of any of our receivers. I was pointing out that there are guys he should have known, if he was paying attention.

You are right about the fact that stats do not tell the entire story here is another stat that i found on the web:
Seattle played the easiest schedule in the league according to average DVOA of all 16 opponents. Washington played the fourth-hardest schedule and the hardest slate of any team to make the playoffs.
And you guys still managed to win only 10 games and we played the fourth hardest schedule and won 9.

Who is your receiver core I do not even know one receiver from your team!!!!!That goes to show how good they are. ?
If you actually have to ask, then you really have no idea who the Seahawks really are. Alas, it speaks volumes of your inability to objectively speak to their collective talent.
The fact is however...1 through 5, they are VERY solid. Cooley is really the only reciever on the Skins roster that is vastly superior to his counterpart in my view. Moss is a stud, but Seattle also has a few.
Branch (who may not play) is a former superbowl MVP. I suggest to you that speaks to both his ability and his potential performance is a big game. His injury makes him a question mark however.
Engram. The consumate possesion guy. Great hands and decent speed 94 catched this year for 1143 yards. Better cover him on 3rd down like a glove.
Burleson If he gets the ball in the open, look out. And don't kick to him either.
DJ Hackett. Been hurt a lot this year, but he's a big strong and tall deep threat. Hasselbeck loves the guy.

Branch: Proven he can show up in the biggest of games. What was it? 10 catches? however, even you have to admit he has been a huge disapointment so far, and is not the same receiver he was on the pats.
Engram: has had a career year. 94 catches is a hell of a lot. No matter how little I think of him, he does have great chemistry with Hasselbeck this year. You are right, we need to cover him like a glove. If not, T.O.P will kill us.
Burleson: We have done a fantastic job on kickoffs and punt returns. I highly doubt he breaks one off against us. Also, no one has gotten wide open enough to make a play VS us the past 4 games. Doubtful Burleson does anything at all
Hackett: uuummm yeah
Pollard: Doughty shut down Witten. This will be a easy task for him.

tell me your complete idea of the game, what's gonna happen? List all the reasons except Sean Taylor why you guys have the edge in thsi game. you REALLY want to go there? REALLY?
ok here goes:
-You've lost to teams with a combined record of 46-50, the redskins have lost to teams with a combined record of 70-56 or close to that. our loses are much harder than yours.
-you get 6 free wins from a piss-poor division. your record against non-division teams? a pitiful 4-6
-your so-called sack machine defense got most of their sacks against teams playing back-up QB's
-you're a division champ of the WORST division in football with a record of only 10-6. thats not something to be proud of
-you're strength of schedule is close to nill, ours is close to unberable
-we're riding a 4 game win streak with a quarterback with a rating over 106.4, you're riding a 2 out of the last three losing streak after having lost to atlanta with your starting defence giving up 44 points to one of the most mediocre offenses in the NFL
-our 12th ranked rush attack has exploded in the last couple of games, your 12th ranked run defence has played the against (and lost to) some of the worst rushing teams in the NFL.
-at present the skins are playing better than their record says, at present the seawaks are hardly playing at playoff level.
-last but not least, you have beaten one team with a winning record early on in the season. the redskins have beaten two teams with winning records in the last 3 games, including our divisional champion.
the seahawks are like Hawaii in college ball. they cool againt non-factor teams, but when it comes time to play in the prime time people realize they're nothing special.

Funny how you play in the NFC West and go 10-6 where 6 of your games this season were the 49ers (5-11), the Rams (3-13) and the Cards (8-8). Funny how we play in the NFC East and finish just 1 game behind you where 6 of our game are against the Cowboys (13-3), the Giants (10-6) and the Eagles (8-8). Funny how you guys have 1 win over a team who ended up with more wins then losses and that win came in week 1 against the 9-7 Buc's. Funny how you guys haven't played a team that made the playoffs this year since week 5 when you lost 21-0. Funny how you guys backed your ***'s up into the playoff playing in a **** division, while having the easiest schedule out of all the teams this year, when we had the 2nd toughest. Don't be surprised when the Skins come out and show you what a real playoff team is like.

You have got to be joking.
First of all, I'm no Seahawk fan, but I'm pretty sure that your "all-world, sure-fire Hall-of-Famer" Marcus Trufant does not have an "e" in his name.
Secondly, no one shuts down Chris Cooley. Look at the LB's and SS's he's gone up against throughout his career so far. You think "little Lofa" is gonna stop Captain Chaos. Please? Plus Lofa's over the top help is so impressive, I don't even know his name.
An finally, as previoulsy mentioned our UNDRAFTED ROOKIE tackle has stopped everyone from Jason Taylor, to Strahan, to Ware, To Spears. In case you didn't know Joe Bugel coaches our O-line (ie The Hogs-greatest line in the history of the NFL). He could teach blind guys with no arms to block like All-Pro's. So, I don't think they're gonna worry much about your super hero like pass rushers.
Thanks for stopping by. Hope you enjoy watching Green Bay beat the Bucs or Giants.

Jumping back to the original post...I am sure the Seahawks fans are loud but...I think I've heard on more than a few occasions that the noise is amplified more as a result of the way the stadium is designed. The noise "bounces" off the walls and awnings. If that is the case, what an awesome stadium the Hawks have. I don't think the actual noise coming from the fans is any different than any of the fans of other teams. Imagine if FedEx had the same design with 90,000+ seats!
I think people forget that it is the stadium design that gives the illusion that the fans are louder than they really are...

Dude, go up and read where this started. It started because one of your REDSKINS fans said that he has never heard of any of our receivers. I was pointing out that there are guys he should have known, if he was paying attention.
Any WR can be made or broke because they don't have a good QB. Thats just a stupid statement.
my statement has nothing to do with a wide receiver having a bad year b/c his qb is not good. what i said was that your average wrs are having good years b/c your qb is really good. i wasn't making any generalization at all. i was speaking directly to your team. you on the other hand are incapable of speaking directly about your team because you clearly do not understand a thing about your team. if you did, then you would acknowledge that your recievers aren't anything worth talking about and simply talk about how hback is having an outstading year again.
if you are going to come to this board and talk, then at least be competent enough to understand your own team before talking about ours.

A lot of you have blamed our offensive line for yesterday's loss but I think the crowd played a huge part here too. Normally a line has split second jump on the snap since they know the count. But since they could hear nothing yesterday, that was negated and may explain how Seattle's D-Line was in our backfield all day.

Many teams (ie Seahawks, Colts) are known to have articifial crowd noise, which is illegal, but since it makes the games sound exciting on TV, league administrators and referrees turn a blind eye, and they aren't motivated to thoroughly investigate it.
So if other stadiums are being condoned for it, why aren't we exploiting it like these other Superbowl contention teams?
Understandably, we can't request Snider to do it publically (nor privately unless you are friends with Snider) to play crowd noise over the speakers, so why don't we be proactive about it as fans, and make a highly organized/clever 12th man of our own?
There are some really loud handheld horns out there that squawk and bleet really intensely. If all the fans in the endzones can pound these horns when the QB is making his Hut-Hut cadence, we can drown him out so that his O-line can't hear. Then it's "False start, number 60, offense, 5 yards..." all day, especially against shotgun teams, when backed up in their own 5 yd line, or threatening to score at our 5 yd line.
If horns aren't allowed, the endzones need to get organized and mimic the Hut-Hut verbally, instead of just screaming senselessly (screaming senselessly should be done while the visiting team is huddling). This type of organization/innovation is needed to make the best 12th man in the league.
Also when kickers are attempting a fieldgoal, instead of everyone behind the uprights shaking their arms crazily, everyone needs to get organized and perform a synchronized left-to-right (and viceversa) crowd wave, so that instead of the crowd behind the fieldgoal appearing as just a whitenoise shimmer, it will look like the crowd and the fieldgoal is actually swaying side-to-side, creating a sense of vertigo in the kicker when he's lining up his kick.
Just like a rookie QB, the crowd 12th man will have to have several games under our belt to get as organized as we need to be to do the above. But with a few leaders in the endzone sections of the stadium, I believe we can get there by the time next years playoffs roll around.

I remember back in 2003 during a hotly contested game with the Ravens, Baltimore came back to win like 44-41 (who thought they were capable of putting up that many points?). Anyhow, after the game, Holmgren whined that the P.A. announcer up there incited the crowd by emphasizing "3rd down" or something, and the Ravens were told not to do that anymore. Yet Seattle thinks they can get away with this stuff because of the design of the stadium? Unfortunately because the design in fact pumps noise back into the field, there isn't any way to prove that they do pump in sound without an NFL official sitting in the last 2 rows of that stadium, which would never happen. I'm just glad they'll get killed in Green Bay.

No, it doesn't. Actually, it's probably a pretty good indication that they don't do it anymore, since they've been penalized once.
I posted a link to this once a few years ago. It was tough to find an article on it, but I was back in college then and had access to EBSCO and Lexis-Nexis.
I'll run a search through my old posts and see if I can find the post I made. Ironically, I think it was from a Seattle newspaper.

Did anyone hear the post-game show on Redskins Radio yesterday? Sonny,
Sam and Larry as well as Bram at a different point in time all said that part of the crowd noise sounded artificial and that it sounded like extra volume of crowd cheering was being pumped in through the speakers.....wouldn't doubt it for a second (because they do it at FedEx field and I sit directly below speakers in the UDeck and have heard it!) ....and their fans think they're so freaking special..Our fans blow theirs away!!
HAIL!!! :logo:
a buddy of mine was at the game. he just moved to Seattle a few months ago. He is a skins fan but is not as crazy about football as most folks around here. He roots for Seattle since he lives there, but only when they are not playing the skins. He is more of a casual fan.
he texted me in 2nd quarter and said they were definitely pumping noise in. That he could talk to the folks around him and hear it blasting out of the speakers at times when the crowd wasn't into it.
Doesn't really matter, but i thought that was interesting, considering they make such a big deal about how their fans are just so much louder than anywhere else.
That is a tough place to play regardless, I have no problem with it. But it's kind of comical in a way.

How about petitioning to have overhangs put on Fed Ex? That's legal, right?
Tiger Landry
January-6th-2008, 01:33 PM
I sit 2 rows from the top at Fed Ex on on several occassions the noise level went up about 25% from the speakers directly above my head.
The first time about 5 other fans and I all looked at each other and said "did you hear that?" It was definitely way louder than what the stadium was producing and you could hear the suddeness of it being cut off......I don't know if it's a soundtrack of crowd noise or if is a live microphone getting actual crowd noise and then spitting it back out of the overhead speakers, but it's definitely being done at Fed Ex here and now..heard it probably at at least 3 of the games this year...
It's not like we don't already produce enough crowd noise on our own...Skins fans are truly the 12th man in the NFL!
HAIL!

I thought in 2000 we got our wrists slapped because of something the obnoxious PA guy at FedEx was doing, not because of pumped in noise.
I don't think it happens every game but more than several folks have noticed what seems to be fake noise coming in at FedEx.
It seems like the only way we're going to be able to show how loud our fans will be is if we host a playoff game again. The crowd does perform well from time to time, but I've never experienced the sustained intensity at that place that I witnessed during the playoff game against Detroit.

Well, I've found an article from the St. Paul Pioneer Press about the time the Redskins were fined. I was right that it was in 2000, Oct 9th to be exact. They were fined $20,000. Unfortunately, the St. Paul Pioneer Press charges for access to the full article. The abstract from Google news, though, reads as follows:
[Oct 24, 2000] ... in the noise level at the Metrodome on Sunday than at any other game this season, and he added that the team does not use artificial noises. ... On Oct. 9, the Washington Redskins were fined $20000 for violating the NFL's crowd noise rule in a game at FedEx Field against the Tampa Bay ...

I find pumping in noise to be disgusting and I hope they cut it out at fedex.
Like I said yesterday, building a stadium to hold in noise like that is also bush league but it's not much the league can do about it since the POS is up.

isn't every home team crowd special to the home team? i'm sure the skin fans take as much pride in the way they support their team as do the seahawks fans, and it was a lot of fun yesterday. we didn't sit down the whole game, and only shut up when the shawk offense had the ball. and when trufant was running back the interception, well, if you watched, you heard the crowd - it was pandemonium.
there's a reason the hawks are 25-3 at home over the last 3 years - the confidence and emotion the team gets from the home crowd is a huge factor in a game.
also, the nfl checked out qwest field after a giants game two years ago - nothing is piped in, it is that loud.
good luck next year.

The Redskins have been penalized for doing it in the past. Documented fact, not speculation.
If I remember, the skins weren't fined for artificial noise, they were fined because of what the PA announcer did.
Here is an article describing what happened:
"Before the game, the public-address announcer yelled a derogatory phrase about the Ravens fans that ended in a mild obscenity."

Defense played well, offense had trouble. We lost by 21, a cruel way to end the season so suddenly.

Looks like Snyder was into all kinds of shadiness during the 2000 season. (By the way, what could be lower than charging the visiting team bus for parking? Charging fans for training camp, I suppose)

Guys....who cares about this? People who whine about crowd noise being fake or not are doing just that.....WHINING.
These guys are paid a very nice salary, from the coaches to the players, to prepare for games, and all of them knew that seatlle has a huge homefield advantage...we experienced it 2 years ago in the playoffs.
There is one great way to take care of crowd noise though.....play better.

Yes it is that loud. Any gripes about the noise or if it was piped in is sour grapes at this point.
If we didn' blow a couple leads this year, we'd be in Tampa today.

Honestly, nobody cares about the Seahawks. When they win a Super Bowl....wait.....win they win three Super Bowls......no wait.....when they play in five Super Bowls and win three of them, come back here and talk to us. Have fun pulling for your mediocre team. Go Pack!

Dang, I didn't even think of that. And you were the first person I've seen mention it. I can see why that would hurt. But... might that not be his way of putting his stamp on the end of the season? Seriously -- if guys were pumped and playing for Sean and winning a game by 21 points and Sean had a hand in that (nobody planned to win by 21 points), then were again playing for Sean but lost, again by 21 points, and were all broken up about it, might that not be Sean's way of saying "that's OK, I'm here"?
