I say let's get him as a second option at wr if we can't get any other big name wr. But I don't think he is worth the big bucks. I also believe he migt be alright here seeing how he would be playing for his home town team! He has the size and speed we need so why not, **** he is way better than keenan, b.lloyd and reche. The 3 I just named most likely won't be on the squad next year anyway. imo!

I like his size and abilities (we could definitely use some bigger targets at WR) but the price tag is too high for someone who's had a history of attitude problems
granted, he has been with the highly dysfunctional Raiders so he has a right to have an attitude...I just get the impression that too much of the "bad" Randy Moss rubbed off on Porter

No more overpaying in free agency.
We need a tall WR. But, I think you could get one on the 1st day of the draft. He doesn't need to be a 1st or 2nd rounder. Just a guy who can be your #3 WR, and your #2 in the redzone.

Lets just go get a big guy in the 3rd or 4th round for cheap and see if he develops.......and PLEASE GIVE MIKE ESPY A SHOT NEXT YEAR!!!!

January-4th-2008, 06:13 AM
dude... I had him on my fantasy team and DROPPED his sorry butt.
I don't agree that Reche won't be on the team next year. Maybe even Keenan, too, to teach some young guy that we draft in the later rounds, where you can still find possession recievers.

Definitely a "no thank you".
I think our receivers are pretty set - although I wouldn't mind a big, young, possession receiver added to the mix.
Porter is past his prime and would cost way to much.

I really like what he can do when he is motivated, but the problem is getting and then keeping him motivated.

The only reason I might take Porter over Keenan is because of the age factor but Keenan has definitely has a better career. AlsoI'm not sure if Porter is better than Caldwell at this point.

I dont think Jerry Porter is such an good idea. I like the group we have now. Caldwell has come along and is a good #3.

I know one of Jerry Porter's cousins, and he's always told me that Jerry hated it in Oakland and that he thinks he's held back by that team.
If he wanted to take like half the money he was due next year, I might be interested; I don't see that happening, though.
Hiro
January-4th-2008, 08:17 AM
Well ... he's been relatively quiet this year actually. Before that one year in Oakland with Art Shell, he wasn't much of a malcontent. Not willing to pay him 5 mil or anything like that, but he is a talented WR. And if he's from here, who knows? Maybe he'd be a heck of alot happier with more talent surrounding him?

We need to start looking to the draft to get the WR we need. Keeping Reche right now should be a priority as he is a very good #3 WR. But the #4 spot could be filled well with Mix or a 3rd or 4th round pick with size.

I'd consider it but that isn't where I would look to spend the FA money.
Besides the good reasons already listed I would expand:
He will turn 30 during Training Camp.
He has never had a 1,000 yard season.
In 8 seasons he has played 16 games 4 times (starting 16 games twice).
He got these stats opposite Jerry Rice, Tim Brown and Randy Moss (i.e. about what we could expect from him opposite S. Moss - IOW these aren't fluke career stats where he was triple covered).
He isn't a TD machine: His best year [2004] he had 9 TDs which tied him for 12th in the league
This isn't an insane signing for some teams, he doesn't "suck" (this year his Avg on his 744 yrds off of some bad QB's put him 8th in the league) but I do not think he makes sense for the Redskins next year

I'd give him a look if the price was right.
Funny story about Porter. One time I was waiting to see a doctor when this dude that had a business relationship with Porter (I won't disclose the nature but it was very clear) comes in and starts talking about the finances of Porter and his Mother in great detail...very personal information that I wouldn't expect anyone would want aired in public. This went on for at least 15 minutes and I was able to catch the guy's name as he had identified himself to the caller.
About a year later one of my employees tells me about a new guy that her Mother had started dating....and what he did for a living. Turns out it was Mr Mouth from the Dr's office.

I don't think he is going to get as much as he thinks on the market. I also believe that he wasn't used properly and if he had a decent offensive system and a decent QB, then he would be pretty good.
Didn't the Skins look at him while he was on the trading block a couple of years ago? I am interested in him for the right price.
I like Porter and Andre Davis. We'll see.
But, what do I know? I am just a dumb beyatch!

If we're looking at WR in FA, I say we target Bryant Johnson in Arizona. He's younger, and has been pretty productive with the Cardinals. Plus, Arizona has to put the franchise tag on Fitzgerald, leaving Johnson unprotected.

January-4th-2008, 09:19 AM
Two years ago everyone here would have loved to have him and this year being on a bad team with no QB he was not able to produce a good season.
Anyone remember him going up against Champ Bailey a couple years ago in Denver and having a career day? I do , I watched that game and he was awesome.
I believe you put him on a team with a positive coach like Gibbs and an atmosphere unlike the Raiders and you would see a completely different player. I think he would be a good player for us.

no thanks, too much of a locker room cancer from what ive seen. and we dont need to get older at the wr position. lets get a later round big guy and groom him. and we have mix so lets give him a shot next year.
id be happy with moss and caldwell starting, are in the slot (sometimes switching with reche too). and mix and espy splitting at 4th.

January-4th-2008, 11:00 AM
why not keep the WRs the skins have now and bring up Mix and espy. If your going to get another WR why not just keep Lloyd for another year the same risk with both

I'd rather throw some bucks at Bernard Berrian, the guy is coming into his prime, is big and could be a legit #1.
Or Bryant Johnson from AZ looks like a serious sleeper...

while i think the guy is talented.. he will want too much money and another team will pay him. PLus.. we need a 6'4 big WR that can be a threat in the in zone or at least draw covg from Cooley. Think Colston, TO, Roy willams clone.
Esp having WRs like TO and Plaxico in our devision, you can see what kind of effect these typ of Wrs have for an O.

Well, Fitz isn't a free agent this year, he just wants to be traded. But you're right in that they will probably use the franchise tag elsewhere (most likely Karlos Dansby), and Bryant Johnson will be free to court the open market.

He sounds like he could possibly be a lockerroom problem. He was sat down by art shell last year. I know that there are two sides to every story, but I don't think with one nut case (85) on the team, that we can really afford another.

I think we should wait and see what Mix has to offer. I know a lot of Giants fans that are upset we stole him from their practice squad. He's listed on the roster as 6-5, 235 so he could be the big target we want. Plus, he played with JC at Auburn so there is a familiarity there.

But we should definitely sign Reche and give Mix a real chance.

Very Simple answer: HECK NO, JUST SAY NO!
We have a solid LB core, yea we lost Rocky no tellin if he will be able to recover in time for next season. But Blades is showing promise, Godfrey should be around next season and Cambell have all been a nice rotation.
Fletch and Marcus are both playing lights out IMO, we are in good shape.
We have other real needs.

No way. Pass on Jerry Porter.
I'd rather have Reche Caldwell & Keenan McCardell for depth as wide receivers. Both have veteran leadership, good character, and great hands. Both are great for intermediate routes and really stepped up this season when the Redskins needed them the most.

not sure bout all 3. def lloyd will be gone. keenan gets bonus points for being a former skin, and caldwell has produced lately. he is a reliable WR when it comes to 3rd downs....but yea, we def need to find a big WR, someone fast, but also big
