View Full Version : Interesting quote from Portis on Redskins.com

I was watching his interview on redskins.com and I thought what he said at the end was really interesting.
Portis was basically saying or at least made it sound like that with offense as a whole did not really understand exactly how the offense was "suppose to work" due to the fact that everyone was still learning the system. However when Collins came in after Jason's injury, offense finally started to figure out how things are "suppose to be done" cause Todd knows the system in and out.
If this is true, I wonder maybe it would have been better to have Jason sit and learn for one more season while Todd started from the start of the season. For me, this is just so interesting to see how much just having that mental game contributes so much to teams success than pure physical attributes.
I really wonder if its ever wise to pick a quarterback in the first couple of rounds of the draft. It seems there are so many quarterback who is having success because they were picked in the later rounds so they are having an opportunity to just learn the system. Look at what Sage was doing in Houston.

Can't dwell on the past. We made the playoffs. Collins is fresh, which may not have been the case if he played from day 1. Campbell is young, but he ain't that young. 26 is the age where your future QB needs to be put in to games. I have no regret with Campbell playing this season. If anything, it helped him learn and grow from his mistakes. I think with his injury, and the emergence of Todd Collins, he will again learn more from the sidelines. Everything is falling in to place for Jason.

Interesting points...since apparently there is the "1st Round QBs Must Perform And Win ASAP" mentality prevalent around the league (at least with fans), picking a QB in, say, the 3rd round wouldn't be met with as much derision if that QB sat on the bench for 3 years before taking a snap...which would give him some valuable and much-needed time to develop to a point where he's more effective on the field during his first 16 starts. Romo sat on the bench for 4 years...imagine if he had been the last pick taken in the 1st round and was thrown into the game in his 2nd year instead lol...he most likely would have struggled far more and won far less, and Dallas fans would have been yelling for his head, calling him a bum, cut him and get a REAL QB in there. And God forbid if Bledsoe was his back up and came in and played well for awhile lol ...Dallas fans would have been clamoring for Bledsoe.
And yeah, when the players see Saunders' offense being executed the way it's supposed to be, they gain confidence in it and a better understanding of it...But there was NO way Collins was getting the nod as starter back in 2006, not after that preseason he had lol ...

I really agree with this :applause: ...JC's injury could end up being a HUGE blessing in disguise for both Campbell and the Skins as a whole. I've been thinking that since the Vikings game.

Couldn't agree more...Campbell has aready that Collins is makng reads that he wouldnt have done if he was in there. That tells me that just sitting & watching Collins run the Offense has already benefitted his knowlege base.

Well now that they are understanding how the O is supposed to work, Campbell should be able to come back in and everthing will keep clicking. Kinda like with teachers, sometime you can't quite grasp it with one person telling, but some else comes in and explains it differently and it all makes sense. Campbell coming back in won't cause them to forget it though. I agree with other statements that this could be a huge blessing.

I believe going into next year (assuming that the coaching staff is intact) that there will be a better knowledge of the system as a whole and then watch out.

Nice perspective. What did it hurt. Our young QB gota lot of game experience and we made the playoffs. We have a fresh QB that has mastered the system and is playing well. The worst thing about the whole deal is the young QB had to suffer an injury.

Interesting. This is giving the offense a great opportunity to learn this system with someone who knows it in and out. I guess the hope is by the time JC is back, the knowledge of this system will be far greater. I'll be the first to say I was doubtful of it for a long time. With TC at the helm showing what it has the potential for, I get very excited for the future.

Well its obvious that JC doesn't know the system like Todd, since he's had atleast 7 years to master it. But its hard to look at it in retrospect. Todd being 36, do you think he would have stayed completely healthy during a 16 week grind? Especially with the right side of the line decimated early in the year, who's to say that Todd would have been that productive with no pass protection. His physical skills are already limited, so for him to escape DLineman when the pocket collapsed like usually did would be highly unlikely. I think its a little bit more than Todd coming in, even thought the majority of the credit for the offensive production is because oh him. But I think Heyer playing well and the right side getting better every game has helped.

Agreed. We are peaking at the perfect time.

I would guess that the game film from the last 4 games will help tremendously because JC will actually see plays put to use instead of on the pages in a notebook. Imagine how much JC would have learned in 06 watching Collins instead of watching Brunell execute the check down, since he clearly didn't know the offense either. Hind-sight is 20/20.

I think JC is a great student of the game. He is seeing how the offense is supposed to be run and how it looks when it is running. He will be great next year.
Lets not forget that its not just the O that has sparked us. G Dubs and the D side have been playing Lights out here for more than a month.

Now the players have confidence in the system which they didn't in the past

TC is having a good run, but even if he wins the Superbowl, you give the keys back to Campbell next year. TC has three to five years left in the tank... total, probably only one or two quality years left. Campbell hasnt even hit his stride yet, and we have already seen flashes of brilliance from him. We ride TC until the wheels come off, then we get Campbell some weapons in the offseason, (Chad Johnson hopefully) and gear up for a hell of a ride next season. My fear is that everything comes apart this offseason (Saunders/Gibbs leaving, new coaching staff and lots of players leaving) and we are left to rebuild yet again.

I hope this doesn't come off as a complaint because I'm definitely a much happier camper with the skins in the playoff mix. But wouldn't you expect that Todd has previously gone over the offense with this team before now? Perhaps at practice they would pull Jason aside and say "O.K. Now watch what Todd does." No hard intentions or accusations, Just another consideration and topic extender.

No worries, we have this!

In addition this will be TCs 5th start. That is usually when QBs get comfortable in any offense under fire, by the 5th of 6th game of a season. TC now has had plenty of time to work as the starting QB with the starters in all kinds of weather, situations etc. That is a huge + for our offense that no one is mentioning. How scarry is it, when looking at this fact and concluding this guy can even be better than what he has shown so far?

Agreed. When JC clicks with this offense, he has the tools to be a GREAT quarterback. He has a very bright future.

TC (12 yr NFL exp) is a Al Saunders taught QB for the last 7 years, he knows the system because he prepared as a backup for the last decade studing every in and out of the system. this will be JC 6th OC (2 years w/Saunders) dating back from his freshman year in college. The kid is our franchise QB, he progressed every week due to his coaching and players like TC helping him develop. I doubt Gibbs will turn his back on his young franchise 1st rd QB.

Jason has the oppertunity to learn a lot over the next few weeks and going into next season. with mark more than likely retiring that leaves jason and hopefully todd as the qbs next year which means they have one qb that knows the system back to front and another that is getting a better grasp of the system as the season progressess. Todd can also serve as a learning tree for jason regardless of whos #1 next season im glad to have both qbs in the burgundy and gold.

well then we need to win this week so that Jason Campbell will have yet another opportunity to see how the offensive is SUPPOSE to run.

the thing ive been questioning lately is was brunell the best person to start before. i believe we had brunell, JC and TC. TC was the only one who knew the offense. i know there was the year before al came to town, but after that.
TC knew the offense, so maybe he should have been given a chance to run it instead of having no one on the field who had ever been in it. might have jump started the process back then instead of waiting til now.
but hindsight is 20/20

I'd like to see the Skins sign Collins for another year and put a nice bonus in his contract if he works intensively with Campbell in the off-season to fine-tune his understanding and execution of the Saunder's offense. I believe Campbell, with a little more work, can become our quarterback of the future. I haven't felt this way about any quarterback we've had on the roster since the Gibbs I era. However, it's obvious that Collins is real comfortable in the offense. He's hitting the receiver's in stride much of the time and placing the balls where it's difficult for the defense to get a turnover. Often, with Campbell, the receiver's had to make acrobatic and awkward catches.
