View Full Version : Jason Campbell (2 Years Left on Contract?)- Does He Resign Longterm?

It's great that we have this current QB luxury, but Brian Mitchell, Doc, Jacoby, JLC, and others have all commented about how the entire team has played great, in all three components, during the latter portion of the season. We've discussed whether Todd Collins will be retained since he's a FA this summer. Now another question.
To my knowledge Jason Campbell has 2 more years left on his contract which would mean he's a FA in 2009. Let's play Devil's Advocate and say Collins starts the 2008 season for whatever reason. Now, the way Gibbs runs the team the starter gets all the work in practice, etc, and the backups play cards on the sideline. If so, and Campbell enhances his spades card play...
Does he test the market in 2009 and not re-up with the Skins beforehand or at all? Is this something you think the Skins front office has already thought about? He'll definitely get looks on the open market so I wonder if we've discussed locking him up beforehand. If he sat the 2008 season to further learn the 700 page Bible, I doubt he signs a contract that will be obviously incentive laden and correlating to production as a starter. Someone check on Campbell's contract status though.
Thoughts Brethren?

Smart thing would be to extend him right now before he blows up next year.

i better not hear any "super smart" fan say let him go because we have collins, because in 3 years collins turns 39.

Really? Do you think Collins would be playing as well as he is right now if he was "playing cards on the sideline" like you previously stated?

Sign him now, sew up our future QB for the next 10 years!
Collins will be our hero of 07-08, but JC is our future.

We need to keep Campbell and play him. He is the only good young QB we've been able to find and, with time, may produce on Collins current level. Collins is having a good run, but he's simply too old to be our future. Campbell is a keeper and thus must be kept.

If Collins starts next year (which, to the dismay of many on here, he will NOT), then I don't see Campbell staying. Hell, I wouldn't expect him to. But he'll have a good year next year and then the team will re-up with him befor the 2009 season for sure.

if campbell doesnt start next season, then this franchise is going downhill.
Campbell will leave and have a good career and own the redskins everytime he plays us.

I think Campbell will wait till the 2009 season to sign anything. You see all the fuss about the QB contro on this site, so by then he can really see where he stands.
Of course, it's all business so we'll see. As mentioned, the 2008 season will be a good indicator, but I wouldn't be surprised if he tests the market. I know all his friends are here, etc., as well. Another significant aspect will be what Gibbs does. If he re-ups for 2 more years then that plays a part. If not and we bring in another staff who knows. As JLC of the Washington Post said though, a lot of teams would be interested.

if campbell has a good season no way redskins let him walk
no one lets a franchise QB walk away

Sign Collins to a generous 2 year deal. How generous will depend on how he does in the playoffs. If he does well and we beat Seattle and Dallas, Collins will be the starter in '08, and Campbell will get another chance in '09. There's no sense in locking up Campbell now, because we still don't know if he'll be any good. If he does end up starting more games in '08, by the end of the season we'll have enough to know if he's a worthwhile prospect or not.

What are you smoking? I thought most Skins fans were smart, but this statement just ridiculously stupid.
Campbell will get an extension, without a doubt. I'm glad you're just a fan and not the front office!
Patience. He hasn't even had 2 years to play in the system. If he's sucking at the end of next year, I'd start worrying, but until then, keep the faith. Patience.
This is Campbell's team. He'll be alright.
The mere idea that people thing a 37 year old should start next year is just...beyond me. Get off the high and remember that this is Campbell's team.
