TROUBLE IN OAKLAND?

Amid the release of a statement by the Raiders that defensive coordinator Rob Ryan (who reportedly had his next job already lined up) won't be fired, we're hearing talk within media circles that leads us to believe that coach Lane Kiffin could be in a little trouble.

The rumor making the rounds is that Kiffin wanted Ryan to be fired, and that owner Al Davis blocked the move.

There's also talk that Davis polled the players regarding whether they prefer Ryan to Kiffin. Though we don't know the results of the effort, we're told that Davis did the same thing a year ago as to coach Art Shell, before Shell was fired.

RAIDERS: ROB RYAN REPORTS "INCORRECT" by Michael David Smith

For the past week, multiple media reports have indicated that Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is not just on the way out, but already set to begin a new job with another team.

But there's one problem: Ryan is still under contract to the Raiders, and the Raiders say it isn't true.

The Associated Press reports that team spokesman Mike Taylor said today that Ryan would return for the 2008 season.

"The recent conjecture regarding the removal of Rob Ryan is incorrect and the constant barrage of rumors is irresponsible," Taylor said. "The Raiders organization stated that the speculation that Rob Ryan will be relieved of his duties should stop."

Considering that InsideBayArea.com previously reported that Ryan "had already secured his next place of employment," this news must come as a bit of a shock to the team with which Ryan had already secured employment. That team was widely thought to be the Jets, although if the Jets and Ryan actually came to such an agreement, it would constitute tampering.

Of course, it's also possible that the Raiders' statement today doesn't really mean Ryan will be back next year. After all, when NFL Network's Adam Schefter reported late in the 2006 season that Raiders coach Art Shell would be fired, the Raiders issued a statement calling Schefter "a false rumor monger." As it turned out, Schefter's report was 100 percent accurate. The report that Ryan is leaving for the Jets may prove to be as well.

 Only Al can get into these predicaments.

"Excuse me Rob, you know how we told you that you were fired four days ago.........Psyche.....We were just joshing ya."

Ryan moving to the Jets as DC would be an immediate upgrade for them regardless of the Raiders record last season.
