Ji seems to have quit so I'll be the one to get on your nerves now.

It appeared earlier that the D.C./Baltimore area would not receive any wintry weather out of this next system. It looks now like something MAY happen in the area.

Details to follow...

at best...we see a brief period of snow/sleet followed by a warm surge and rain

I don't think it will be brief.

Obviously we'll know more tomorrow but I'm inclined to think that the wedge of cold air is going to hold a bit longer than advertised.

What's HAM radio?

Anyway it's looking more and more like a rain event for the D.C./Baltimore area.

Other places, however, will see some wintry precip.

New map soon.

I guess it is just a waiting game now, but I would love to see a few inches of snow out of this.

I am surprised since it is coming from the south and it seems damn sure cold enough why we wouldn't get more. Unless the warm air from the south will somehow push out or ride over the cold air.

Either way, right now I keep seeing 1-3 inches of a mix. I have to work on Thursday so that would suck having to drive emergency vehicles in ice.

What is kind of ironic is that my wife doesn't have to work on Friday (damn state workers!), and if it snows enough she wouldn't have to go in anyway!

We'll have to see how it pans out but the Radford/Blacksburg/Roanoke area could be looking at around 3 to 5 inches of snow.

It's a wait and see at this point but the potential is there.

(in response to your question on accuweather.com)

QPF stands for Quantitative Precipitation Forecast. It's the amount of liquid precip forecasted for your location.

When trying to understand how much snow you're going to get, the general rule of thumb is that for every inch of QPF, you get 10 inches of snow. That can vary based on temperature but in this case I'd say that ratio is very accurate. Our forecasted QPF is in the .25 to .50 of an inch range. If it stays mostly snow, you can do the math and say that 3 to 5 inches is a good possibility. If some sleet mixes in then you are looking at 2 to 4 inches and if you get a mixture of Snow, Sleet, and Freezing Rain then it'll be significantly lower.

I believe the models are being conservative with the cold air. They never do a real good job of predicting the CAD (Cold Air Damming). That is when cold air from high pressure banks itself up against the mountains. In this case, most forecasters think that the temps aloft will warm enough to change to sleet or freezing rain. You just can't know exactly at this point.

We should know more tomorrow. I am feeling confident about the 3 to 5 inch prediction I made earlier. I don't think temps will rebound too well tomorrow and by the time the precip arrives, they should drop some more because of evap. cooling. I don't think we make it above 30 on Thursday.

The long range forecasts have several storms that could affect us, but the the timing and forecasts for these storms keeps changing. Certainly looks like a more active pattern though. We'll get a hit from one of them eventually!

The 18Z GFS looked good for the 24th and it looked like temps would actually be dare I say....COLD ENOUGH!

But of course it's 9 days out so nothing is definite yet but we can hope things piece themselves together.

Ji

looks like 2 chance for snow this week

tomorrow could start as a period of snow before mixing. We could see a light accumulation especially W of I-95

there is another chance on Saturday night with much colder air in place. This is from a wave that is suppose to develop in the gulf. right now, the general consesus is out to sea but its brushing us but future runs could bring the storm closer in. We will have to monitor this one carefully but if i had to guess right now....id go 1-2 inches

B&GPride44
January-16th-2008, 07:08 AM

We may get a wintry mix here in SC. Odd for it to happen. Only snowed once last year, about 4 inches and by the next day it was melted. On the other hand we had a hail storm last spring that brought tennis ball size hail and there was so much of it, it actually covered the ground and it looked like it had snowed. Good thing my cars were in the garage at the time.

2-4 inches is your definition of good. That's what the NWS says..and then substantial ice.

We haven't had a good storm since the Blizzard of 2006 which was really only a blizzard for NYC upward since they got over two feet.

IAD 2-3 inches

probably very little snow in the I-95 corridor.

***WARNING--MAJOR STORM POTENTIAL FOR SATURDAY NIGHT***

We really need to watch a gulf storm thats developing this weekend...the models all day have been trending stronger and closer to the coast. The temps will be alot colder and much more supportive of snow than the storm today. The 00z NAM is very bullish for a major (3-6) snow event for DC

we could see potentially a good amount of snow lol...and then there is the one for Jan 24-25

HOURS...BEFORE CHANGING OVER THE LIGHT RAIN AND AREAS OF FREEZING
DRIZZLE. TOTAL SNOWFALL OF 1 TO 3 INCHES IS EXPECTED FROM THE

NWS realizes it'll be more than we thought.

They have now put up Winter Storm Warning to the west for 4-8 inches.

I think we will see some early closures tomorrow.

Ji
January-16th-2008, 09:06 PM

Winter Storm Warnings have been issued for a couple county's just to the west of the metro DC area. 4 inches or more is being projected. Colder temps for a little longer than expected will be in effect tomorrow.... They still don't know exactly but here near IAD I think we'll get a good 3 inches. (I can hope!)

And with Saturday's potential. Oh yeah this is sweet!

I wake up for a morning jog to see this update! Good!

But looking at the radar, it looks like the mountains are splitting the storm directly in half like a knife. Hopefully it gains strength on the tail end (which it looks like it's trying to do). The Gulf is spitting out moisture straight in to Alabama/Georgia, but it looks like it's struggling to keep it up.

Well, it's 4:10 a.m. in Silver Spring, and no sign of it yet. Plenty cold outside, though.

The current warning says this:

AN INCH OR TWO OF SNOW CAN BE EXPECTED ALONG THE INTERSTATE 95 CORRIDOR TODAY...WITH 2 TO 4 INCHES POSSIBLE IN THE NEARBY WESTERN SUBURBS.

When they say western suburbs, do they mean west of the cities, or west of I-95 (e.g. I am west of 95 but north of DC)?

Also, can somebody give me a clue of the range of snow possible for Saturday? Worst/Best case scenarios? All weather.com says right now is "Snow 70%"

I wasnt a big fan of this storm when i first saw it on the models. To me, it was a period of snow changing to mix and then to rain. Well, the official, unofficial Radford EMS accumulation is currently 4.5 inches.

Good call B. I told you the local stations were downplaying this way too much.

Although around here, it looks like no one decided to go to work anyway so they could get the 5 day weekend!

It may switch over to a mixture of Rain/Freezing Rain/Sleet.

But that looks less likely for suburbs north and west of the city.

I say it every time it snows but I cannot believe how inconsiderate and awful drivers are around here. Just glad to be home finally.

The roads are an absolute mess, main highways are ok but VDOT hasnt gotten to any of the single lane roads which is where most of the accidents are. I passed 3 accidents within 1000 yards of my house, time to crack a beer and sit by the fire.

Where the hell are the trucks laying the sand/salt? It's no wonder there are so many accidents in NOVA everytime we get a touch of snow/sleet. They are figgin' non-existant right now. The key is to lay the stuff BEFORE/during/after the snow, not just after. Rush hour is going to be a *****.

FCPS has a long and storied history of constantly making the wrong decision when it comes to snow. Back when I was in the system they'd let us out early when we ultimately only got a quarter inch and some rain... but they'd keep us there if there was 3 inches of legitimate snow on the ground and more coming down. Its pretty much the same way with cancellations and delays.
