View Full Version : Lookin for a little country...

Hey folks, my range of taste in music is basically all over the place, but I
really haven't gotten into the whole country scene, because..... well...... I
don't know why..
While in my local watering hole the other day, a song came on that I
remember from when I was a kid (foot tappin kinda song), and looked it up...
ended up being Eddie Rabbitt's "Drivin my life away. I have also enjoyed a
couple random songs here in there I have heard at various places, and of
course most folks whether they hate country or not love the song "Friend's in
low places".
What I need help with from the local country listeners, is who you recommend
for someone who would like to taste some country for the first time. I am
kinda leaning more towards fast paced foot tappin kinda songs, and trying to
veer from the girlfrieend ditched me, dog died, truck broke down kinda howler
songs...
Any recommendations?

As PB said, Brooks is the man.
Then there's Alabama, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson. That's a good "manly" start.

Well with every artist there are gonna be songs that are sad and songs that are upbeat.
I could try to recommend some individual songs or artists/groups if you want... I will list artists right now.
Rascal Flatts - some good upbeat songs in their albums
Brad Paisley - He has some of the funniest songs I have ever heard
Montgomery Gentry - good selection of upbeat songs
Trace Atkins - good selection of upbeat songs, also some good funny songs.
That should help a little, I would have to go looking hard to list some good songs for you, memory isn't serving me well right now on song titles.

Yeah, the only thing i could find for that were crappy YouTube covers, but i do love that song. The Fever and Longneck Bottle are also favorites. The Thunder Rolls is awesome, but i dont think it is what Pez is looking for.

I'm not really a country fan either, but Toby Keith's, "Me" always makes me smile. Very fun, clever song. Also, like his What do you think about me now... song

These three will get you a good mix of traditonal, as well as "Today's" country. That'll get you started. However, the best country is about "My wife left me for a drunk who kicked my dog on his way out the door of my repossessed mobile home!"

Well... my preferences in rock are classic rock over modern rock, so it may apply in country as well...
I remember hearing guys like Kenny Rogers growin up, but I think that was because he was a genre crossover artist.

Listen to some old George Straight. Upbeat good stuff. I'm down with any of the "outlaws" grew up on that music.

I can't speak for Old School Country because I came onto the Country scene 4 years ago when I met my wife. However, I really like it now! I would have to go:
1. Kenny Chesney - Tons of great songs on every album!
2. Brad Paisley - FUNNY Stuff!!! Great Guitarist!
3. Tim McGraw - Great tunes and a HOT WIFE!!!

Also check out Clint Black, Mark Chesnutt, Joe Diffie, Tracy Lawrence, and Tracy Byrd.

I'd recommend bluegrass too. I've seen some great live stuff lately... it's always good, always cheap(free?), and great for everyone.
Lot's of hillbillies at some of the live shows, but they're mostly harmless :)

Another band that's not so big but one of my favorites is the Mavericks. Definetly upbeat lots of accorodian. Flaco's the man!
