View Full Version : If Norv makes it the Super Bowl or wins

Does he really deserve the credit, or is it just another case of the previous coach building up the team, and then leaving, only to have the next coach benefit from his work ?

If he makes it to the Super Bowl regardless of who built it...Norv should get a lot of credit for being the guy who got them over the top.

He gets credit for taking them to the Super Bowl. Not sole credit, but credit nonetheless.
We had a 10-6 Redskins team in 2005 that should have been division champs if we didn't have so many bad breaks and the Giants didn't have so many good breaks. The next year, with essentially the same team and high-priced free agents, we were supposed to be Super Bowl contenders, but instead we went 5-11. If some other coach had taken that 5-11 team to the Super Bowl, are we supposed to say that coach deserves no credit because he took over someone else's team?
With that said, this thread may turn out to be pointless as the Chargers are going against an undefeated Patriots team.

I would agree with both, or partially agree with each.
While Marty built the team, if Norv makes it, at least he won't fall to the level that Marty has been notorious for, his whole career - choking in the big games.

We'll just resurrect the debate, if he wins tomorrow. :)

That team is so undisciplined, I don't know how they've made it this far. I'd still take Schottenheymer over Turner anyday of the week, regardless of the current results.

Well, Marty deserves a big chunk of credit for building the team up, but I'd give Norvy a little credit too. However, I highly doubt they'll make it to the Superbowl, so this is really a moot point as far as that game is concerned...

Then he'll get to hang out with guys like Gruden and Switzer.
He will be considered in the right place, at the right time.
That's it.
and the bigger donkey than Marty will be Wade Phillips who if he stuck around probably would have been HC in San Diego.

What it will prove is that Norv is a horrible judge of talent.
Everyone can say that the reason he is succeeding now it because he "finally" has the talent he needs.
Well for one thing, he didn't bring in the current talent at San Diego
And secondly, in 7 ears with the Skins, he couldn't assign the right talent to win.

That is Marty's team. Give Norval a year or two and watch the implosion.

It'll be a surprise to some of us, based on his well-known deficiencies as a head coach, but any real evaluation of his impact on that team will have to wait a year or two. As many have noted, even a muttonhead like Barry Switzer can "lead" a gift horse to water. What happens next is what history records.

IMO, if Norv Turner wins on Sunday, he should and would be considered an above average coach.
However, if Norv Turner wins on Sunday, I'm Napolean Bonaparte.

This is really a silly question. Because there's ZERO chance of them beating NE, dude. NONE. In fact, I would be surprised if the Pats don't win by at least 2 TD.

Haha wow fans are so freaking harsh on poor Norv. No credit at all if the Chargers make it into the Super Bowl??? Of course everyone and their brother was giving him ALL the credit when that team was 1-3 to start the season.......

If Rivers doesn't play, as he is now listed as doubtful, you may be close to being right.

All I have to say is: :puke:
Really, it's just that the team is way too good to let Norv bring them down.

No offense, but that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. It's the NFL, and any team, and I repeat any team has a chance of beating another team. Plus, this is the playoffs and anything can happen. The Chargers have finally started playing defense, something they didn't do the first time they played New England.
Now, to say they don't have much of a chance is a different thing, but they do have a chance. There's currently only 28 teams that have Zero chance of keeping the Patriots from going 19-0 and that's because they're not in the playoffs.
Though I'm not one to wish for an injury to any player, lets just say that one of the Chargers hits Brady, whether for a sack or just after the ball is released, and Brady's throwing shoulder gets planted in that icy field causing any kind of injury. Whether he returns or not, if he can't throw an accurate deep pass, you've taken Moss out of the game, because Moss's great attribute is his deep route abilities.
Again, anything can happen in the NFL.

Their season looked lost early and they have rallied back strong. He has to get some credit.

It really wouldn't matter much even if Rivers were 100%. The Pats are just much better than San Diego. And don't we all remember what happened to the last team that trash-talked the Pats?

Dude, I'll say it again..... The Chargers have NO SHOT at beating New England!

Now more than ever, I truly hope they win. Are you going to make an excuse that you were trying not to jinx them or something if they pull off the upset?

Should have made the word "If" in the thread title in caps...this is a big IF...
With Rivers, LT, AND Gates banged up AND the way the Pats have been playing ALL season long, a San Diego W is highly, highly unlikely

*shrugs* Wasn't Wade supposed to take my team long distances with the team The Big Tuna supposedly built?
Really-give credit where it is due. After starting 1-3 after an ugly loss to lowly KC at home, instead of folding and revolting against Norv, this team instead rallied around each other and decided to go the opposite direction instead.
Sure-unlike Dallas, this team has alot of firey and passionate leaders, but it's not like Norv just sat around and did nothing while everyone else did all the work. Maybe Norv DID learn from his previous coaching errors? Look at Coughlin this year and how well he adjusted his style.:2cents:

I hate to agree, but I agree 100%! Norv deserves a lot of credit. Every coach can only win with good talent. Norv has it now and is showing his game planning genius we all know he has. Thats why he was a great OC, but not HC. What he also lacked was discipline. But the players learned that from the Schotty days and had it instilled in them. But Norv had to at least maintain that. You have to give him a lot of credit. Is he a GREAT coach in the NFL? No, but he will def show he is a VERY GOOD coach.

I wished that NE lost, but since they didn't I guess I am glad that Norv didn't make it either. It would have made our franchise look more disfunctional because Norv was coaching them to a better record and we could never do anything while he was here. He seems like a nice guy and a good coordinator, but I am not necessarily sold on him as a coach. I was hoping last year that he was going to get the cowboys HC job and run the team into the ground. When wade philips came on, I thought he was as bad or worse than norv. I guess I was wrong about philips in the regular season, but I was glad that they gagged big time last weekend.
