View Full Version : LT hurt or "scared?"

His injury was supposed to be the least serious of the three key ones coming into the game. What is going on here? He was pulled early in the game because of a "coach's decision" and later they are just saying he is hurt.

How is he not playing in the biggest game of his life? Sounds to me like he is not hurt but is afraid of getting hurt.

Emmitt Smith (hate to give props to a Cowgirl) played with one shoulder against the Giants in a huge game yet LT is sitting this one out?? I tell ya, my opinion of this guy gets lower and lower each year. Riggo is right. This guy is overrated and soft.

To be fair, it's his knee-RBs, when making cuts et al, have to utilize this part of the body the most.

At the same time-it seems to me that maybe his injury MIGHT be more serious than Norv is leading everyone to believe.:2cents:

Did you see LT? He looked bad to me and totally unable to really cut.

Rivers was out there but he was QB. You can't run around with a messed up knee, not if you can't cut or accelerate.

That's true, bad knees much worse for a RB than a QB. I don't mean to hate on LT, I just thought it was strange.

I have to admit, I probably lost some respect for him today also. At the same time, I will give huge props to Rivers and Gates and the DL for being out there. Like you, I can't fathom how a guy wouldn't be out there playing in the biggest game of his career. I mean, they were ONE game from the Super Bowl! And, im not buying that he was all that hurt. If he were, then he would have never been able to even start the game in the first place. He's just a chump.

No one knows how his knee felt. Turner looked better than LT which means that LT was probably not 100%. I'd give a guy who's missed a handful of games in his career the benefit of the doubt.

A QB steps back and doesnt use his legs as much.

Are you trying to tell me that LT would have had a tougher go of it than Emmitt did? I don't buy this at all. LT's knee was sprained, likely minimum pain and COULD have gotten hurt. Emmitt's shoulder was dislocated and was in immense pain.

Norv obviously didnt think he had it to do. It is not like they have scrubs as backups they have Turner and Sproles who are legit playmakers. Plus on that screen pass that LT caught he just ran out of bounds. He didnt try to juke Bruschi out or anything. I think his injury was worse that reported.

I realize that ligamentous strain can weaken the knee and make it much more susceptible to major injury...but I still think I'd want to be in a huge game like this, regardless of this risk. So I gotta say, I was really surprised when LT came out of the game. I don't want to declare him as "soft" quite yet, I want to hear more about the injury before I make that determination.

Yeah LT came away from this game looking soft to me. Maybe he had more than a "bruised knee" but if Rivers has a sprained MCL and partially torn ACL, LT better get in there. It's the AFC championship game, how do you not have enough heart to play through the pain on that kind of platform?

You think if LT tells Norv that he wants in the game, Norv is going to tell his future HOF MVP running back to sit down? I don't see that happening.

But I can't blame LT for sitting if he was that concerned about his knee, this is his career and his future. But he just sat on the bench with his helmet on, and didn't seem to say much to anybody. The whole situation was just odd.

I'll be honest, a hurt LT would have been useless against a swarming New England D-line like yesterday's was, Even Turner the Burner had difficulty making many yards.

LT couldn't have won no matter what he did. If he did play and struggled because of the injury, people would have complained about that. They'd wonder if LT hurt his team by playing while not at 100%. Some would have called him selfish. We would have heard how great Michale Turner is and what he could have done in place of an injured LT.

He diagnosed himself with an "MCL sprain" after the game. Last week, it was labeled a hyperextension (which has NOTHING to do with the MCL). Him saying it was "re-injured" doesn't make sense.

He had to have had an MRI to KNOW that he doesn't need surgery. It wasn't Sunday afternoon, in between the time he called it an MCL sprain and the medical staff called it a hyperextension.

Why was it labeled a sore knee and information released that he 'could return'?

Sprained MCL. RBs can not play on a sprained MCL and be effective. Places too great a strain on the ACL and PCL, placing the RB in danger of making a minor injury a career threatening injury.

And why wasn't it listed as seriously as it is? Hmm, why is Tom Brady on every injury report as questionable with a shoulder?

Nowhere in that article did I see a grade specified...nor did I see anything other than LT's words describing it as an MCL sprain. He wouldn't have participated fully in practice Thursday and Friday with a grade 2...probably wouldn't have even been cleared to play.

Even if it was about deceiving the Patriots...what did putting him on the field initially accomplish if they even THOUGHT it was a grade 2 sprain of his MCL? As you said, the risk would've been astronomical to other ligaments in his knee....

Again, a hyperextension does not = MCL sprain.

Grade I - will return to full play after up to 10-14 days

Grade II - will keep athletes out of play for about 3 weeks

Grade III - will keep athletes out for an average of 5 weeks

San Diego is saying Tomlinson should be fine with 3-4 weeks rest. Do the math.

Not to nitpick...but we've heard nothing from the results of an MRI..which would confirm or deny LT's 'diagnosis'.

I'm still not seeing how a hyperextension is directly relevant to the MCL...

It's just time...Most of these injuries, when you have a sprained MCL, it takes four weeks.

L.T. COULD HAVE PLAYED? (http://beta.profootballtalk.com/2008/01/22/lt-could-have-played/)

Posted by Mike Florio on January 22, 2008, 6:59 p.m.

As reported on Tuesday night by ESPN, it was announced in the press box at Sunday’s Chargers-Patriots game that San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson “can return” to the game.

There was no mention of L.T. being probable or questionable or doubtful to return. The announcement was that he “can” return. One media source told us that such a description is virtually unprecedented.

And thus his failure to return fairly can be regarded as a decision made by Tomlinson, and no one else.

The source has expressed to us a belief that the Patriots were targeting Tomlinson’s knees during his limited time on the field, and that this prompted Tomlinson to opt for the sidelines.

So while the pissing match between Deion Sanders and Tomlinson is grabbing much of the attention, the broader issue is whether Tomlinson could have played, and whether he simply chose not to.

Dan T.

How about this... He could have played, but he knew he couldn't run well, couldn't plant, couldn't cut, and so he knew he would hurt the team by being out there with a healthy Michael Turner on the bench.

It's one thing to play hurt, which he's done before. It's another to hurt your team by trying to play when an injury makes you ineffective.

injury aside, when the chips are down, he reverts into some kind of pouty mode and removes himself from being a teammate altogether.

ok, so you're pulled from the game and pissed....get over it, get your arse up off the bench and support your team from the sidelines.

heaven forbid the guy be downtrodden/sullen like all of the Chargers fans were when he found out he couldn't play in one of the biggest games of his career. Some people who are injured don't even travel with the team, doesn't mean they care any less about their team. I agree with megred....I see nothing where it specifies the type of injury he had.The Chargers are hoping to avoid surgeries to LaDainian Tomlinson and his sprained MCL in his left knee and defensive tackle Jamal Williams, who had a chronic high ankle sprain for nearly all the season. The early thinking is both injuries will heal themselves with offseason rest.

LaDainian Tomlinson has a sprained ligament in his left knee but won't need surgery.

Tomlinson suffered what was described as a hyperextended knee in last week's playoff win against the Colts, and the Chargers said he now has a sprained medial collateral ligament after taking a hit on his first carry of the game.

A knee hyperextension and a strained MCL refer to two different ligaments...how was it reinjured?

But it's a playoff game with your team having the opportunity to carry you to the Super Bowl. Plenty of time for crying later, man up, get over it, and be a productive team mate in whatever capacity possible. Even if that's just handing out the Gatorade.

How many players have come back to the sidelines on crutches, with slings, whatever and at least supported their teammates? I don't know if it helps or not but to sit on the bench and pout for the entirety of the game is bush. And it's not the first time he's pulled this crap.

Amazing detail in this piece. Tomlinson is sitting on the bench sulking, just like he does during important playoff games.

The only inaccuracy in this product it that the piece is made of a solid, hard resin, while the real Tomlinson is decidedly soft.

Second-degree MCL sprain to sideline LT six weeks

San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson was diagnosed Tuesday with a second degree knee sprain of the medial collateral ligament that will require at least six more weeks to heal, according to his agent, Tom Condon.

Tomlinson was examined by Los Angeles orthopedic specialist Dr. Neal Elattrache, who said the injury was positioned near an attachment that also "caused disruption of the hamstring fibers."

"The doctor said this is the type of injury that would seriously hamper LaDainian's ability to cut or push off the leg," Condon said. "His quadriceps muscle had already atrophied one inch. He absolutely can't play in the Pro Bowl and there shouldn't be any question as to why he couldn't go when [the Chargers] played New England."

Not the type of injury that would require one to plop down on the bench, ignore the game/teammates, pout with arms folded and generally look like one doesn't give a rat's *** about the outcome of the game, however.

You bust your ass training for 7 years (everyone has seen the SC piece on LT and the sand hill he uses in his yard and how hard he trains). You become the best RB in the game (active). You lay it all on the line to get a chance to play in the SB. And you get reinjured on the first play of the game, to the point that Bruschi can run you down from behind.

Maybe he kept his helmet on so the visor would keep the media from focusing on the pain he was going through. Anybody who has actually played sports before and has had to miss THE game of the year due to injury would understand what he was going through and just might give him the benefit of the doubt.

I love LT. Small school, big success in the NFL. Great role model/example. However, he's come up small as a RB and as a team leader in the playoffs. I've played sports (obviously not at the same level) and have missed games due to injuries, and yes, it is the most frustrating thing in the world. However, I just was left with a bad taste in my mouth after seeing him moping on the sideline, contributing nothing to the team effort at all. My perception wasn't just based on the one game, but on his performance/attitude regarding the postseason as a whole. Big time players should excel in big time games and he has not stepped up in the postseason.

All of you complainers are pathetic in your bashing of LT. You throw him under the bus because he didn't cheer his team on as he was sitting on the bench hurt. Yet, I don't hear anyone bitching about when Santana Moss took himself out of the game because he was dropping balls.

He could have continued to play, yet he made the right decision to pull himself to better help the team, so he says. LT has an injury in the AFC Championship game, doesn't return and gets bashed for being upset about it as he sits on the sidelines, one game away from making the Super Bowl and he's now soft, a punk, bad teammate, etc.

Grow up.

I've never said he was soft or a punk. My point is he is the best regular season running back, yet he disappears in the playoffs. I also questioned his leadership abilities.

Like I said, I just don't see why the team didn't confirm it at the time LT said it. You mean to tell me they didn't have team doctors inspect him the day of the game? Or give him an MRI the day after?

It sounds like more of a professional's advice defending the actions of LT (orchestrated by his agent)...

Aside, that was only 50% of the issue. If this was TO on the sidelines pouting (for ANY reason)...there'd be no excuse for it. Stop giving LT a pass because of his regular seasons. Noone's saying he isn't a great regular season back. He's proving he isn't a playoff back though more & more.

That doesn't seem like his personality though. He's not going to be the guy hollering on the sidelines and pumping up his teammates. If I was his teammate, and saw him doing that, I would think that he's being a little fake and needs to calm down. Unless you've ever seen him pump everybody up? I don't watch many Chargers games.

BTW, has anyone here risked millions of dollars by going into work? I for one wouldn't blame LT, even if he could have come back in, for sitting out solely on the risk of his career.

I respect Terry Glenn for trying to come back, but he's nearing the end of his career. I still don't understand it though.

He was on Dan Patrick today and was saying he didn't think he could play but he wanted to at least give it a shot.

If this is true then WHY was he not on the injury report?
