Hey all. I went to the doctor today for my Bronchitis & he put me on azithromycin (an antibotic). I really want to get nice & toasted at my buddy's party tonight, but I don't want to cancel out the effect of the antibiotics. I read through ALL of the fine print on the medication and there was no mention of alcohol at all. However, for years I have heard many different opnions on the subject, but never anyting concrete. Does anyone here actually know if this just an urban legend/old wive's tale???
Thanks!

I would recommend against it... The alcohol can interact with the antibiotic and decrease it's effectiveness (among other side effects) and you don't want to be taking antibiotics longer than you have to.

According to WebMD, don't do it :
"Be careful mixing alcohol with certain antibiotics," says Jenkins. "The main antibiotic-alcohol interactions are with metronidazole (Flagyl) and the sulfa drugs -- commonly used antibiotics." An example of a sulfa drug is Bactrim.
Mixing metronidazole and alcohol can cause nausea, vomiting, flushing, headache and stomach pain, Jenkins says.

I asked this same question to a friend that was a nurse the last time I was sick enough that I needed antibiotics. She said that nothing bad would happen to me, it would just negate the effects of the antibiotics and that I would take longer to get better or be sicker then before the next day because alcohol weakens the immune system. It's really up to you.

They do not interacte in any way that matters, I always drink on them, and I am on them at least twice a year because of bronchitis.
The only effect you might have, is with Biaxin, which is basically what you have, it's harder on the stomach, and drinking excessive amounts of liquor might make you vomit. Other than that, it does no harm, I even called a pharmacy for you to check, and they verified it.

PB, ya more concerned with whether he got a good buzz and wasted on beer, than whether he had severe side effects from the mix with the drugs ?
