Miami Dolphins hire Dan Henning as offensive co-ordinator
DAVIE, Fla. - Dan Henning was hired Monday as the Miami Dolphins' offensive co-ordinator, joining head coach Tony Sparano's staff more than a quarter-century after his first stint with the franchise.
The 65-year-old Henning has coached in the NFL for 28 years, most recently as offensive co-ordinator in Carolina from 2002-06.
He was Miami's quarterbacks and receivers coach in 1979 and 1980 under head coach Don Shula.
Henning is well-versed in the ways of new Miami football operations head Bill Parcells; they worked together when Parcells was head coach of the New York Jets.
Henning was head coach in Atlanta (1983-86) and San Diego (1989-91), plus has also spent time in the NFL with the Houston Oilers, Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills.

And in all his previous jobs he was essentially fired for the same reason each time. Having a slow unimaginative plodding offense. How he keeps surviving in the NFL is a mystery to me. The Vinny Cerrato of coaches.

His slow plodding offense went to the Super Bowl a few years ago...and in any event he's a Parcells guy, they're good friends. Parcells has never had a high flying offense, he likes it pretty basic with a solid running game and a capable passing attack which is exactly what Henning will bring. Dan Henning knows how to coach winning football, he's been to Super Bowls, he's won Super Bowls. Parcells is trying to change the culture there by surrounding himself with winning football coaches and that makes Henning a good hire, he fits the parcells bill perfectly.

Here in Charlotte, they couldn't wait to get rid of him. Sometimes I think age catches up to you and I for one would love for the Redskins to get younger on the coaching staff.

...and in NY they couldn't wait to get rid of Coughlin and Eli. Just goes to show you that as a whole...the fans usually don't know ****!

I hold no ill will towards Parcells/Ireland/Sparano and will probably enjoy watching them build this team into a consistant winner, but I think hiring Henig is a mistake. He's gonna run an ultra conservative Parcells type offense and Sparano has stated himself that when he was calling plays in Dallas he wanted to be more agressive, but Parcells kept him from being so. I have to think there was a better candidate out there.

That's not always true. Sometimes the fans do know better and the Panthers offense was anemic. Grant you their best QB was out, but no one else stepped up. But, alas, I could give a rats butt about the Panthers.

I'm pretty sure Henning wasn't the OC this season. Don't know who was, but he was either fired or resigned at the end of 06'

I think it is a good hire. Ronnie brown is the best player, the oline is not that good at pass blocking and they currently have no real QB. They almost have to be conservative. He is a parcells guy and a winner so that is a plus too. Also i always thought the carolina offensive talent was overrated. Smith is often hurt and no one else scares anyone, the running backs are all overrated (from when davis was there to foster and willliams now), and delhomme is purely average.

They hired the offensive coordinator that the Browns had. The interesting part to that is to see how the Browns improved this year with a different coordinator. I don't think Henning was the problem for the Panthers, I just think they had to get rid of someone and make it look like they were trying to improve to keep the fans interested. I think he will be just fine for the Dolphins. At least they are able to get coaches!!

Henning was not the OC this past year. Just proves his point.......

I never said he was the offensive coordinator here this past season. I know Jeff Davidson took over this year. Reading is fundamental to both of you.
