Highlights From Zorn News Conference

What follows is a rough transcript of key comments, posted live during the 3 p.m. Zorn presser:

• First up, of course was owner Daniel Snyder, who thanked fans for "their patience and understanding. I appreciate very much the fan support and patience. ... I also want to thank Joe Gibbs for his daily calls and support. ... It was very comforting as he told me to keep going on the process. ... i appreciate every much that support. ...
The commissioner, Roger Goodell, was frequent caller too, telling me to be patient and complete the process....We conducted a full search and we ended up with the right guy."

• On the circumstances that led to Zorn as the choice: "Vinny kept saying after every interview, 'Zorn.' And that's how we got there."

• Fashion note (http://www.mensvogue.com/): Zorn is wearing a black suit and a bright yellow-gold tie. After the usual thank yous, he addressed the matter of taking over a pre-fab staff. "I'm excited that there's a lot of the staff in place already. I think it would be very difficult for me to come in and start from square one [with the combine and draft upcoming]. ... It's going to be much more comfortable for me in this situation than it would be starting from scratch.

"I want to acknowledge Joe Gibbs. I look at these three trophies [like I have to tell you they're the Lombardis...] and it's quite intimidating and I know who's responsible. ... In my playing career, I was only on a team that had a chance to play for the AFC championship in a losing situation. ... I want to acknowledge that a lot of the things that are in place were by Joe and Dan...Thanks, Joe, and thanks for being here [at Redskins Park]. I hope to be able to lean on you in situations that could be a struggle."

• On his mentors: "Bobby Ross with the Detroit Lions has been a major influence in my coaching career. ... The thing I learned from him was how to work. ... Working under Mike Holmgren, I learned how to be efficient, how to delegate, how to oversee and make sure that all the areas you have in place are being taken care of. ... [He's great at] stepping in, stepping back out. ..."

• He also said he would definitely hire an offensive coordinator.

• Zorn now is saying how much he admires the players for the character they showed in the aftermath of Taylor's death. On the tribute to Taylor by the defense in the first game after he died: "I thought to myself, 'Who could have thought something like that up, to play with 10 players on a play to honor a fallen teammate? It's pretty awesome when you think about it."

• He favors a balanced attack and, duh, the West Coast offense, "This whole game is about rhythm, not about hanging onto the ball until you see a guy open."

• On his reaction when Snyder asked Thursday if he wanted to be considered for the head coaching job: "I was taken aback, but not quite speechless because the first words out of my mouth were 'Certainly, I'd like to do that.' It was a little but shocking."

• Zorn gave a little shoutout to The Post's copy desk: "I loved the newspaper headline today: 'Quarterback Sneak.' That's kind of how I got in here, isn't it? The Post got it right."

• On the number of offensive coordinators that quarterback Jason Campbell has worked for in his short career: "I say, 'Ehhh, bummer.' That's his career. I'm not going to worry about all the influences he has had. I am going to worry about the influences he is going to have now.

"The thing I didn't like is the way he has had to squat when he's under center. We've got to get the center to get his bottom up a little higher. Part of being a quarterback is being ... explosive off the line of scrimmage. When I was watching him, I wondered how he could be explosive off the line of scrimmage."

• Lastly, Zorn introduced Hall of Fame WR Steve Largent, who was at Redskins Park, and -- of course --was a longtime teammate: "We're still friends and it's tremendous that he lives in Washington D.C., and his boys are here."

Good to hear that Zorn won't be throwing Campbell a pity party. We get Jason up to speed or we find another QB. Simple as that.

I've always wondered about that.

No nonsense and to the point. Going to be interesting in the future. I like the approach, but hopefully he will learn a little diplomacy. I liked how Gibbs never put it on the players in public, but explained his displeasure in private.

One of the most interesting quotes today was:

"I thought to myself, 'Who could have thought something like that up, to play with 10 players on a play to honor a fallen teammate? It's pretty awesome when you think about it."

...I couldn't help but wonder if that was a coded message, and a polite way of gently acknowledging Gregg Williams' contributions to the team and how respected he was by his players. Nice move by the new coach, intentional or not.

When I heard this, I was thinking, is he gonna get fired on his first day? I thought he might have been challenging Snyder...But then again, I figured it was probably Snyder trying to play to the fans emotions who may have been pissed that thats what got GW fired.

The thing with the stance is that in 2007, it was better than in 2006 when Campbell first took over from Brunell. Back then, Campbell was practically on the ground. Last year didn't seem as bad.

Check out this quote from Campbell back in August 2007:
- Does it affect your 3-5 step drop being so low to the ground when under center?

Jason Campbell

Quote:
It did last year but that was something that me and Rabach worked on during the offseason . It wasn’t something that we could do during the season because he had been used to Mark being under the center. It would have been hard for him to adjust during the middle of the season so it’s just something that we adjusted during this offseason. You know, it helps you get the ball out quicker when you can stand a little taller.

Nice comments from Zorn. I like what I hear already. Here are a few of my thoughts:

* In a prior post, I commented that Zorn was *probably* happy that he had a staff assembled because it was one less thing to worry about. I also said that if he had a problem with anyone before/during/after the season, Snyder would make a change because Snyder is willing to spend/waste money for the team. I was just guessing, but I was right. :p Haha.

* I like that Zorn is a little intimidated by Gibbs and the trophies. I like that Zorn said that the best he could do was compete for the AFC Championship. It's like an edge, or a chip on his shoulder, or... hunger. He wants it to be his turn. The fact that he doesn't have that, so long after the fact... yeah, that isn't something we'd have if Cowher was named the guy.

* The "playing in rhythm" comments only make sense. We all assumed it. It sounds a lot like what Saunders wanted. It sounds like minimal change, offensively, in regard to the system...

* BUT! I loved that he didn't whine and cry for Campbell. "Bummer"?! Haha. Awesome. As written above, help Campbell be the best he can and if Campbell can't do it, find someone else.

* One of the many interviews I've read with Zorn (thanks to the people here who have posted them) said that he's really critical but does it in a way that leaves you wanting more. Personally, when I went to school I was lucky enough to have some teachers like that. It left me craving criticism. I always want to know exactly what I'm doing right and wrong so I can improve - TOUCHDOWN REDSKINS! Oh, sorry, watching the Pro Bowl. Just saw Cooley catch the TD. Where was I?

Right. Criticism is good and it always irks me when I see people afraid of it. More so in PROFESSIONAL football. These guys claim they went to work and be the best yet they get all irritated when their ego is rubbed the wrong way. That Zorn can dish it out but also do it in a manner that leaves the players wanting more - that's good.

* And speaking of criticism, I love that Zorn is already finding things he wants to improve upon, that he's already finding ways he thinks he can make our impact players, well, more impactful. Get Jason up higher and he can be more explosive. It's a small thing, but we've known for a while now that Zorn is a coach who likes to focus on the details, i.e. the hand-off drills with Hasselback.

Anyway, good first day, coach! :D

My favorite comment was when he was talking about portis and passing, I believe his words were something like "He likes to hurt people. I love having players like that." when he's in pass protection (or something like that)

This guy is going to make some changes on offense for the good. He has already said that JC cannot just sit there and hang onto the ball. I'm sure JC won't mind that either.

I would love to see a quick offense.
