The Guru has a great feel for who will be productive. A nice short piece here on CP:

(excerpt)

"For today, I have a quick and interesting story about Redskin RB Clinton Portis. A friend of mine recently went on a golfing trip, it was a cruise actually, and Portis was on the trip. My friend knew he would be there so he asked if I still had a copy of our 2003 magazine with him on the cover so CP could sign it. I was curious as to how easily Portis would recall my interview with him and the magazine cover and article. Sure enough, Portis remembered it well. Interestingly, Portis asked my friend if he could borrow the magazine overnight and read it. He wanted to see where his head was then (the interview was done a couple of months after his rookie season). The next morning, he passed my friend in the hall and flipped him the mag. “Yeah, I’m the same guy today” Portis declared.

That shows on the field. Portis comes across as a little cocky, and maybe he is, but it’s more about confidence. He’s a confident guy, and he’s a tough guy, a football player. I have doubted him a little in the recent past, entirely due to injury concerns, but the guy keeps coming. One of these years he’s going to break down, but I’m officially prepared to assume the best until we see the worst. For the most part, we’ve seen nothing but the best so far."

Great post...I think we've all learned how lucky we have it with CP. I'll follow him til he drops, no doubt :point2sky:point2sky:point2sky

If they're not called the Redskins
We'll love 'em the same.
Change the name,
It's more than a game.

If you got a problem with the name be principaled enough to not support them.

Portis is so awesome. I really hope he breaks the record he set a few years ago.

I understand you're issue here, but this thread is not the place to voice that opinion.

Like everyone else here, I think he could really break out in the WCO. Heres to 1600 yards for CP

More fodder for the clinton Haters. Or should those who say having a bonafide top ten arguable top five back is somehow a disappointment.

It is going to be sad when CP starts to lose his step. But until then, he is going to be one of the best backs in the league.

I don't agree that's the best way to approach the situation. I'd rather work for change from within, my friend.

There is a ski resort near me named Whiteface Mountain, named so by Native Americans...I'm not offended. It's a massive an impressive mountain, and when it snows...it has a white face. I get it.

It's just silly to suggest a mascot name be changed...the very reason a mascot is chosen is to represent qualities we admire...

Courage. Honor. Skill. Toughness. REDSKINS.

Name a team using a mascot name meant to be disparaging...there are no New York Numbskulls. No Los Angeles Lazies. No Indianapolis Idiots. Get over it.

That depends on how fast the O-line learns their new blocking schemes.

Hopefully Chris Samuels and Jon Jansen remeber their WCO days when Marty was here. Pete Kendall played in it last year, so he hasn't forgoton that much? Randy Thomas as welled played in the WCO when he was with the Jets, hopefully he will not be injured throughout the season like this year.

If the passing game is not up to par then it won't matter how much the O-line and Portis are in sync because they will not be going anywhere. If the Skins get a wide receiver with experience in WCO to complement Santana Moss (who also has played in the system before) then the passing game could be crackalating, maybe. I am hoping for the best despite the pessimistic tone to my post, however.

Thank you, bro, thank you! :applause: :notworthy
Changing the teams name and image is the only thing that would make me jump ship. Unless they change it to the "Fightin Whities", then it would be totally awesome! :helmet:

He is very humble in person. A good business partner of mine went to his house on the three kings weekend, and in stead of partying downstairs with Edge, Chad, Santana, and more, he stayed upstairs with his family (uncles, aunts, cousins, parents) the entire time. He would occasionally hang out downstairs for a bit, but majority of the time upstairs.

He said Santana is a talker and pretty funny, but CP was very humble and quiet.

Of course the name was chosen as a tribute to qualities of Native Americans. But isn't it racist to attribute these qualities to a specific ethnicity, or grouping of ethnicities? Aren't these merely human qualities?

In a different way, if we admire the toughness and determination of black people in enduring slavery and the associated hardships in the struggle for survival and equal treatment in this country, would it be offensive to you to have the Washington Blackskins, with a logo that projects these positive qualities?

I think more people would be disturbed by this, and I ask you, is that really any different?

Cool story. Portis surprises me quite often. I have a good feeling about him in this new offense. If he can catch a little bit more than normal we are really set for a killer show.

You are a hater, the man is 26 years old. Damn, can we be positive about anything? Next year JC will be past his prime!

That would be a new name and open to a new interpretation. The word "Redskins" has zero racial connotation anymore. Ask anyone what they think about those Redskins, and they'll likely just say something about Joe Gibbs.

The fact is, the name has ceased to have any kind of negative racial connotations. I'm a Redskins fan, and I'll never watch an NFL game again if the name changes because my favorite team won't exist anymore.

This thread is about Portis and the article. If you wish to have a different conversation, you need to start a different thread, or better yet, search for a past one on the name topic.

Edit deleted comment about how the owner of the Redskins was half native american and chose the name accordingly.

Dude Portis hasn't lost a step. He has gained a bit of intelligence as to when to go for the extra yard and when to chill out to save his body for the future. He also has excelled behind a decimated o line in a system that was never his forte.

It's his opinion. And I respect that. I can see why he would think that CP is past his prime; he has not produced the numbers we thought he would the past two years. With tha said, he has definately still kicked ass every play that he has been out there and gave it his all.

If we can get a better line for him, I guarentee that he can pull out back to back 1500 yard seasons.

But getting back to the thread title. I love the way Portis plays. He will always be one of my all time favorite backs because he never gives up on a play and always gives 100%.

I am not sure how we got into the name game here but here is my Australian view, I am not subject to the racial subjectivity that you Americans are, I see all people for who they are and how they treat me, I treat everybody the same, the word "Redskins" is I believe not a negative racial word, would the team be any different if the team was called the Washington Indians or Washington Aboriginals, NO!, I have tried to learn about the American Indian and what I have found is that the Indians are a people who were caring for their families and their tribes, they respected each other and the land, they are intelligent, thinking people who were disrespected by the Europeans when they landed in the Americas. The American Indians were strong of mind and body and very brave, they were honest and hard workers. I am proud to call my NFL team the washington redskins, because that is who they are, leave the name be, after all if anyone changes the redskins name then there are a whole lot of other sports teams who will also have to change their names, ie the Atlanta Braves, the Cleveland Indians etc, and then the Cowboys could also have to change their name too. leave well enough alone, the name shows respect to a mighty people.
